Magic lacks Magic

After seven cruises on the Disney Magic, the Magic lacks Magic. The ship is ten years old and its beginning to show its age. We just stepped off the Magic for the eight night December 30th New Years Eve Cruise. Here is what we noticed compared to other Magic Cruises:

Sail away parties have been toned down and NO LIVE band or live singers.

The number of offered workshops for adults have been reduced with only Chocolate Mouse being offered. No guest chefs as in the past and NO Kitchen tours, and No Disney theater tours. Amount of time with the Captain and officers has been scaled back.

Of the eight nights, only three had Disney Theater productions with only two of those major productions. The others nights included War Horse - which was too mature for young kids but they came anyways and three nights had comedians who were very good.. their adult shows were even better.

Our Veheranda had cracks in the floor with Rust oozing from it. Lots of rust showing on the ship also. Carpets are looking old and one was torn on the stairways. I feel that Sessions need to be re-thought. No one attends and the room is not used. Its a beautiful room and very comfortable but now that the piano is at the far end of the room, it leaves a nice space for a Library area.

Dining was the major good part of the cruise. The food was excellent and variety could not have been better. In fact, with the main dining rooms offering excellent choices and quality, Palo's at night is not worth the extra $20 per person. Palo's menues for dinner need completely reviewed. Their brunch was their best offering but dinner is more of the same and certainly needs updated.

Pirate night was fun and the cast did a great job. Prior to the cruise, there should have been more encouragement for guest to bring their Pirate wear. Few were in costume.. but the ones that made the effort looked the part and certainly added to the night. Either men are going to bring Tux's for formal night or just ask for suits... few Tux's were being worn.

New Year's eve, topside was a major highlight of the cruise. The countdown show starring the Cruise Director - from Switzerland - who was one of the best Cruise Directors we have seen over the years. He was fun and brought humor to his presentations. I liked him but forgot his name. ... sorry. The NY fireworks were outstanding and really added to the evening. It would have been nice if the ship would have offered topside dessert for the New Years eve show but the cheap Champaign was ok and appreciated.

The main band who played at the family pool and in Rock n Bar were not that good. Disney has offered much better bands in other cruises. I would drop them instantly. The band for the first west bond Panama canal crossing was the best we have ever seen on a Disney Cruise.. and they did an excellent sail away party out of Orlando...bring them back...

All in all, the Magic is not that great on the Disney Magic. The ship its self and the programming, especially the live music needs a complete review.

We look forward to our August 2012 cruise on the Disney Fantasy.

Happy sailing.

Can you give some more details on the condition of the ship? Too late to cancel for us but I would rather be forewarned than disappointed.

Keep in mind that there have been posts like this for years, and alternatively there have been posts from people on the same cruises saying just the opposite. I'm not saying that people aren't reporting accurately, but as with everything else, perception and individual perspective means everything. I've cruised the Magic 8 times also, the first time 10 years ago and the last 2 years ago. I've never noticed the ship looking anything but excellent. I return to "my" ship in a few weeks and expect the ship to be beautiful as always.

 Hi There! When I saw your title, I have to admit, it made me a little sad. :sad2: We just got off the Magic in October, and can I just say "It was ALL the Magic we expected and needed!" We loved every bit of it. Now, can I also say, it reminded us of our first time at the Kingdom. EVERYTHING was magical that first time. Like looking through a childs eyes the first time. And the more we went (we go almost annually now), we tend to notice now the very things we did NOT the first couple of times. Why? Because the more you go, the more you know, and notice. That's ok though...we still LOVE all of it!
We did notice them painting, some older parts, but that didn't sway us in the least. The entertainment was fine. Some really great singing, some great laughter. Was it the BEST we've ever seen? Nope. But that's not what we paid for. We paid for a great vacation, good food, great memories, and the Disney Ambience. We felt like we got our worth on every penny spent.
Beauty for us, is in the eye of the beholder. So sorry your experience wasn't like ours! And hopefully your cruise next go round will have all that and more!:yay:

You are correct that first experiences are always the more memorable but if you carefully read my review, I pointed out where we saw the ship slipping. None of this affects our love for the ship or the cruise but companies like Disney, the airlines, and others use their reputation to cut here and there and hope they can still get buy. It certainly works for Disney who has a real loyality base - including our family. But thats no excuse for not keeping that ship in top condition and quality programming. The workshops for adults has really slipped over the years. I offered the review to bring attention to the great things on the ship that I felt really made it very very extra special.

This was our seventh time on this ship and our ninth for cruising Disney.

:)Understand where you are coming from! And you're right...Disney will always have a strong loyalty base. Perhaps they'll read this review and others and see where they are slipping or quality in some things are lacking, they'll work on it.
I KNOW for a fact that some 'higher-ups' check out Disboards, because one of the crew asked me if I knew someone on Disboards. Wink, wink and um....yep! And then he told me they were emailed when some of us were coming on board. :scared1:...That being said, maybe corporate will read it and say "Hey, let's make needed changes!"
Still sorry it wasn't 'all that Magic' to you...but know you'll have better cruising next go round!

I respectfully disagree. We just got off the Magic the trip before yours (we disembarked on 12/30) and it was wonderful. Sure, our deck 7 verandah room had a tiny area where the carpet was coming away from the wall. Did that ruin our cruise? Of course not! We ate wonderfully, Raymund kept us thrilled to pieces with towel animals in the room, the kids loved the clubs and we soaked up the sun and spa treatments. THe boat was spotlessly clean and the service cheerful and over the top helpful. Put the room carpet in perspective....

(We had Ron Pearson, the comedian, as an entertainer; he was very funny. We did feel that options for adult entertainment were slim, but we were not there for that - we would have sailed Carnival if we wanted a baccanalia; Trevor and the other Adult staff did a fine job with the grownups. Hated the band: Heat Wave...)

Just my $.02....

I just got off the same cruise as the original poster, and we had a great time. It was our third Disney cruise on The Magic and I didn't find that I had any complaints.

Although like hellomaisy I did not like Heat Wave at all! We much preferred Gabrielle and Jumari and thought they could have been utilized more - in place of Heat Wave.

Anyway, I guess everyone is going to have a different opinion and not everyone is going to have the same experience on the same cruise. I found that the "magic" is very much alive on The Magic. My family loves The Magic so much we are a little bit sad to be going on The Dream instead for our next cruise - but also excited for the new experience!

:)

I never said I did not like the New Years Cruise... but my cruise report pointed out where Disney is cutting things that we felt made for a better cruise. We will be back on the Magic after its renovation which I believe will happen in 2012 or 2013.. but we want them to have great live bands used in the sail away party and at nightime.. we want better workshops including guest chefs, speakers about the islands we are visiting, gallay tours, more interaction with the officers, and an upgraded Castaway Club enhancements. Other cruise lines give significant discounts in pricing..

I still say.. the ship needs renovated.. and that it appears is in the works..

Boac479,

I was stunned when I read on here that the bands were no longer aboard.
I think seeing the house band, and pianist in Sessions/Cadillac Lounge not only created ambience but there is nothing like a good band playing onboard.
Charles Marshal was my favorite band to work with and they alway's got the crowds going wether it was at sailaway, or late night in RBD.
A DJ cannot replace live music and interaction like a band.

The band they used played at night but only recorded music for the sail away. I have been on ships where the live bands are used often on the cruise. This group played at night and at the family pool and they were not that good.

The was a very good piano player in Sessions but no one attended.. too bad because that is a great room. The piano player was very good...

The Swiss Cruise Director was refreshingly great. He was active inthe New Years eve party and of course each evening in introducing the programs for the Walt Disney Theater.. he was a bit more uplifting, fun to be around and a refreshing change.. not stuffy and formal...

I was on the exact same cruise as you and I never once felt that the Magic was lacking Magic. You are correct that they need to get better live bands because the one they had was not good at all. But the entertainment they had was OUTSTANDING!!! Ron Pearson was so funny and my children loved his show. My only complaint for the entire cruise was that the bed in our room was a bit wore out. But that is to be expected when you have people of different shapes and sizes sleeping the the bed every week. I did not allow that to ruin my experience on the ship at all.

Our experience the the Magic was AMAZING, and it was truly one of the best vacations I have ever been on. As for the ship looking old, I have never been anywhere , whether its a new place or order place where someone has something to complain about. What one person may complain about , the next person may find great. But everyone is entitled to their thoughts and that is alright.

My family and I were on the 12/3/2011 Magic sailing. We also sailed on the magic 12/11/2010 sailing. We had tiles in our stateroom bathroom that were coming up. We didn't let it hamper our vacation though. The ship is old, but it is still magical. Perhaps once the Fantasy gets afloat, then Disney can start to overhaul the Magic and the Wonder. That being said, the ship is in a constant state of upkeep. Things are constantly being painted, re-varnished, and cleaned. Like the parks, the ships are kept as spotless as possible. We are scheduled to sail in November on the Dream and I imagine it will be amazing, but it is new, so it should be.

The bottom line is, that the Disney Magic is in great shape considering the age of the ship.

hahahahaha! No! lol!

Here's a youtube video if you want to watch it:

There is music via the DJ and dancing and characters, just not the live band on deck stage anymore.

Ok, so really not so different. I thought OP meant 'no live performers' including the characters and pep-rally type CMs. Actually, I don't remember a live band anyway. (No offense, live band members.)

I was thinking the same thing, I don't remember a live band at sail away, not at least in the last few years.

I'm trying to keep an open mind here...My DW and I are headed to the Magic next Saturday (January 21 - 7 Night Western). This will be our 15th Disney Cruise. Our 1st (in a long while) without our children.

Having spent the better part of my younger years in the US Navy, I am aware that ships age. There is no denying that fact. Do I expect to see some disrepair? Yes. Will it have a negative impact on my vacation? I guess that is subjective as to what's wrong.

Having been onboard before, I honestly can't remember the last time we saw a live band for our Sail Away. Now, please don't flame me, my DW already tells me I'm getting old. :confused3:confused3

Since we are sans kids this trip, we are going to try and do some things we may have missed on previous trips. Again, I'm not looking for 24/7 entertainment, just a few new things for us. Since we are platinum cruisers we have had the opportunity for "behind the scene" tours. We have chosen to not take part. Maybe this time.

I appreciate your honest opinions and will take them with me. I'll let you know what we thought when we return.

Happy Sailing!

We had live bands on Magic for the first Panama Canal Crossing and two years before that for a Western Carribean Cruise and also before that... believe they went to Characters and recorded music after that... Live bands were much better.. and the bands were outstanding...

If you are looking over the ship carefully, check for fraid carpets on the stairs... but I am sure they will all be replaced in due time.

All of these comments are meant to help Disney Management know that they should be offering us the best they can...

We were very disappointed in the quality of the workshops offered. In the past they had guest Chefs doing many cooking demo's.. there were gallay tours also. When we went through the Panama Canal, they had a specialist tell us about the Canal.. We had no one tell us about the islands we visited...

BUT, food quality and offerings were top drawer.. outstanding. The Disney Shows were excellent and the two entertainers were very good...

I believe Disboard members should be pointing out what they want to see to make the cruise even better. I hope others who are taking recent cruises will join in offering their thoughts on making this the best ship and cruise on the high seas...

I appreciate your candor. Too many apologists on these boards sometimes. While I won't let loose tiles and frayed carpet ruin my vacation you can be sure DCL will hear about it when I return and I will take that into consideration when looking to book again. DCL is a premium brand and the condition of the ship finishes absolutely should reflect that.
