We just got back from a wonderful trip Dec. 29th-Jan.4th. I just wanted to share a wonderful experience we had. I had read somewhere on this board that they have a flag retreat everyday at 5:00pm and that if you inquire at city hall sometimes they will allow a veteran to take part in the ceremony. Not only do they allow it but they let my husband be a part of the color guard and had a special certificate printed up and we got to choose a 5x7 photo taken by a photographer of the ceremony. We also got special seating at Spectromagic. It was on the bridge between frontierland and near the castle front. It was wonderful ! All of the characters stopped and paid attention to our children! The best part was that they gave my husband a
special pin that said "Veteran of the Day" It was such a special memory! We inquired about it on a Monday and he did the Wednesday ceremony. We had just come from a wedding so he had his dress blues with him. If you are a veteran or maybe have a son in the boy scouts definitly ask about it! It made our trip so memorable!!

That is an awesome memory to have!!!!

You mentioned a boy scout....what about a cub scout? My oldest DS is a Wolf, but 2 of my brothers are Eagle Scouts and the youngest is working on his. Would they be able to participate in some way?

Thanks!

I am sure it wouldn't matter. I just remember the CM that set it up for us said one time he had a little boy that was in Boy Scouts that wanted to take part in the flag retreat and he said he made it a very special memory for him and his family. The CM also told us he was very excited to see this ceremony starting to get such special attention now. They have always done it but not a lot of people inqiured about it until now so that is why they had a special pin and certificate made up. I know my children were so proud and excited to see their dad out there I can only imagine how exciting it would be for a child to take part! I would ask as soon as you get there and let them know what other day you will be at the Magic Kingdom.

This is so moving to see! We happened upon it last August and I couldn't hold back tears.

Does anyone know if active duty can participate? Do you have to be in uniform? Can I request this before we go?

DH got to do this in October. It was awesome. We didn't ask anyone. A CM just stopped us as we were walking into the MK one afternoon and asked if my husband had been in the military. (Guess he just still has that look, LOL.)

The CM explained the process to him and told him when to be at the flagpole for practice.

It was a great experience. He got a certificate, a special pin, and a free photo taken by one of the MK photographers that showed him holding the flag.

:D
