Every day at lunchtime (11 - 11:30am ish) the Mayor of the Magic Kingdom heads to The Plaza restaurant, located at the ending of Main Street. There, he gets the name of a child having lunch there, includes a photopass person, and begins his ceremony. He presents this lucky child with a certificate and gives a grand speech about being chosen as junior mayor for the day.
The child is given a large pin ribbon and certificate for he / she and family to bypass the line of any selected ride (to be used only once that day).
My son (4.5 at the time) was selected last year and he was elated. We had no idea. This year (2 weeks ago), to our Disney tradition, we had an 11am reservation at the Plaza and saw the Magic Kingdon Mayor enter the restaurant just as he did when we were there last and appoint another boy as the Junior mayor of the day.
If chosen, its a great experience as the characters in the parade and cast members make special notice of the child all day long.
