Magic kingdom down to two designated smoking areas

its OK pretty soon the number of smokers will be reduced by a huge amount at Disney. As Disney increases their prices into the stratosphere many won't be able to afford their smoking habit and a trip to Disney anyway. At least up here in Canada a pack is like $13 so a pack a day habit isn't cheap.

I think it is an idiotic move. Now more people than ever will smoke wherever, and try to hide it by holding it down at their side. You know, the same height as a lot of little kids. Or is Disney just hoping that the smoke will be less noticeable, as it is spread out over the whole park?

We were there Memorial Day weekend, and I was truly shocked to see people smoking everywhere. Hiding around the corner of buildings or walking around openly smoking, now I know why! I get that there shouldn't be smoking areas in certain places, but the reduction in them has already led to people smoking where they shouldn't.

I'm so happy they have done this! Now if they could get rid of that large one in the World Showcase. I have to hold my breath because of the drifting. My signature link says it all.

I feel like the other parks do designated smoking areas better than magic kingdom ever did. Maybe they thought of designated smoking areas when they were designing the other parks and not so with magic kingdom because it's so old and people used to smoke everywhere back when it was built. I always thought the designated smoking area next to space mountain was good because it's away from everything. The one they used to have by the castle was the worst so I'm glad they got rid of that one. The one at adventureland could've been better if it was smaller. I think that's why the smoke carried so much. Because it was just so big.

Smoking is disgusting and unpleasant. I wish they would eliminate the areas entirely.
I totally understand that point of view. But people are still going to be smoking. And if it's their choice to do it, I can't stop them. But for everyone's convenience we can provide ways to let them get away somewhere else to have a smoke instead. Where they most likely won't bother anyone else.

I actually think that they should add two or three more designated areas! Why?

Because then smokers don't have any excuses what so ever, saying that "Oh, there weren't any signs" or "Nah, it's too far away" or whatever kind of lame excuse there might be!

I have people in my family that are extremely allergic, and my sisters have small children. None of them should ever be exposed to second hand smoke if it can be avoided. But it does happen sometimes, of course it's unfortunate. But so is ending up behind a huge truck and getting the exhaust pumped in to the car no matter how good ventilation system one has. Or meeting a friend who has pets, the tiny hairs and dandruff from the pets are inevitable on their clothes and sometimes causes a reaction for some allergic people. But I sure wouldn't want them to get rid of their pets because of that! And downtown people do smoke at various places too. Then just walk around or excuse yourself in a polite manner and I am sure that 99.9% will kindly step aside for you.

I rather see hidden nooks and pathways in the theme parks providing a few more corners for smokers to stand. There are plenty of other walkways for people to chose from, so if you want to actively avoid smoke, check the map and pick a different route. Then the designated areas are clear to find for the smokers to use, and for non smokers to easily avoid.

That's my opinion. Because I am sure that the parks are big enough for everyone to get along! :smickey:

I'm thinking an e-mail to Disney is in order, asking them what they are thinking.

I'm a non smoker so I do not care about this. However, I want to point out for all of you complaining how rude it is because you are allergic to the smoke, I am allergic to air fresheners and perfumes. Some people smoke, others seem to take a bath in perfume and cologne before they can go anywhere. So many of you are causing me physical harm throughout my entire day. I deal with it in the shows, restaurants, attractions and more. So keep that in mind when you are bashing the smokers and 2 lonely smoking areas that you are inconvenienced by having to avoid.

This discussion has me thinking…. and while it is true that there are some allergens and irritants that are somewhat unavoidable… but smoking is NOT something we should ever have to be subject to… because it is not just an allergen or irritant it is a cancer causing agent…. and should be something we are able to avoid…. unfortunately that is not the case….and while a smoker can certainly chose to smoke wherever the heck they want to…. it is completely wrong to subject others to that choice that the smoker made… yet you see this everywhere.. Disney is no exception..sad but true.

It will just have people smoking where they are not suppose to. For the life of me, why they put smoking sections on the walking paths at the resorts, is just crazy. There are so many places where no one really goes that could be smoking areas. Same at the parks.

Completely with you on this.

The only negative about our stay at Pop Century was having to walk past icky smoke every morning on our way to the food court and/or the buses. Right on the main walkway- close to the lobby, food court, and buses.

It may be, as others here have suggested, that if they don't put the smoking areas in convenient places, people will just smoke wherever. There certainly are a lot of people who put their own desires before the well-being of others.

I dont have a issue with this BUT I do see some who will break the rules and smoke where they feel like. They were doing that when we were there last fall.

I feel like rules are only meant for some folks.

They did that already.

Even with all the DSA at the parks and resorts people still violated the non-smoking areas. They still smoked on balconies, in bathrooms, etc. IMHO...if you cannot wait till you get to a smoking area you might want to consider a nicotine patch. WDW put up a sign at the GF warning of Gators....smoking kills more people than gators do.

Hi former smoker here. I was still smoking on our first trip and was shocked to find a smoking area by the castle. It seemed like there were so many little kids in that area and it was all smoky. I was amazed at all the designated smoking areas at our resort that trip. We stayed at POR. The next trip we took had fewer smoking areas at MK. We did notice how that several people were smoking all over the park. Maybe it was because I had just quit and noticed it more. I don't mind people smoking but I do want them to smoke only in designated areas. I hope smoking areas aren't completely removed from parks and resorts. I would like to see CMs be more direct in addressing rule breakers more frequently. Haha, I know, that won't happen but one can dream.

I don't think the number of visible smokers will significantly increase because the respectful smokers will still seek out the designated areas. Just because there are fewer areas doesn't mean an exponential number of smokers will suddenly jump the fence into rude territory. Time for some research to see what's happened in other locations that have reduced designated areas, or outright banned them.
