Magic Key Renewals Start 8/18

Does anyone know it a key can be upgraded midstream? I get a believe. I decide a few months in I'd rather have a Inspire. Is that scenario possible?

Excuse my laziness, just hoping someone saw it or heard of it.

It used to be possible. I’m not sure if it will still be.

We have VGC reservations over Christmas. But given the block-out dates we will very likely cancel. I wonder if you'll see lots of fresh openings at VGC during that window?
This is us. We have Christmas DVC reservations at VGC as well and I'm probably going to cancel. We used to have the Signature+ pass, and I miss it. We were able to enjoy a relatively sane Christmas in 2019. Feels like a long time ago! I was holding on to the reservation in the hopes that there would be a pass that covered the holidays. Have to do the calculus again but I suspect no pass makes sense to us now. We only do 2-4 trips a year from the Bay Area each year (4 days each). With 4 trips a MK would be worth, it but with only 2 trips it doesn't especially since all the less expensive passes block out weekends and holidays. Super bummed. We've had APs forever.

Just so I'm completely clear on this, you were told by Disney that anyone can renew their pass tomorrow regardless of expiration date of their current pass?
See the first post — it is a 30-day renewal window now.

Yes, I did know that was in the rules they sent in the emails and on the website, but this poster said they called customer service about their VGC stay in Nov, when their pass expires midway through, and the agent told them they could renew tomorrow.

I don't know if that was specific to DVC members, people whose renewal point occurs during their reserved on site visit, or if it was misinformation from the agent. So I asked and got this response from jordan13402:
Are you talking about VGC customer care? Are they telling you that if you have a VGC reservation during the time your pass expires you can renew your pass tomorrow even though it doesn't expire until Nov? Or are they saying that anyone can renew on the 18th?
no, not VGC...regular MK users

I just called to ask about this. It’s a 30 day window for everyone regardless of existing reservations. Once you renew, you are then able to make reservations for the dates on your new pass, but you have to wait until the 30 day window and hope that they still have renewals available as well as park reservations. It’s unfortunate timing for us since our passes expire in the middle of our VGC trip, and it’s not like we can even move that because VGC is fully booked.

We are in a similar situation… we have the week before New Year’s booked at VGC and now we’ll need to buy tickets. We’re still going because our vacations are scheduled around school, but I need to calculate whether it’s worth it to still buy MKs and pay over $2K each for “Dream Key” level coverage, or just reduce our trips and buy tickets instead.

For anyone who is able to renew on 8/18 - Can you tell me if they still offer a small discount for renewing? They used to do that for the old APs.

Yes - it's mentioned at the end of the email:

I wonder if the 'surprise' in the magnet is RFID reader for parking to scan car instead of pass (for Inspire pass.) Noticed they've installed antennas at Mickey & Friends pointing at cars.

Picture could still come up on screen for CM to verify, but now that I think about it- probably not due to theft of magnet itself.

Has anyone renewed yet? I can't seem to find a way to actually do so. On the website, it redirects me to their Magic Key page.

Thank you! I guess we'll all have to hope that we can still renew in Nov. Sorry about your Dec trip :(

It seems incredibly weird to me that MK don't have the guarantee of being able to renew in the same tier they currently have (or equivalent for the Dream Key). Like sure maybe in two months Enchant Keys might not be able to renew up but for Believe Keys to not have a guaranteed Believe Key regardless of time of expiration is just weird.

I'm on the same boat. Our keys expire late October and we have a VGC week before Thanksgiving. I'm not going to risk it and I'm just going to buy 5 day tickets. No MK renewal for me which also means no 2nd trip to Anaheim. I've switched plans and going to WDW instead!

well, before yesterday, it wasn't sure if MKs were coming back at all and if ANYONE was able to renew. At least now there's a chance?

What a cool idea! But I agree it’s probably not happening. That’s a lot of work for a relatively small benefit for a relatively small group of people. Plus, like you said, magnet theft. But if there was a thing like a Magic Band for your car and an “express” lane that did not require a stop at the booth, that would be awesome.
