Magic Key Program

I’ll type this out later, but this is via @carlyewisel on IG, who is an actual theme park reporter and reached out to Disneyland for this information. Some of it is new/different/contradicts other info, but she’s generally accurate:

ETA: She has pulled this post; I’m posting her new response in a reply to this.

Curious about the part that's cut off. I'm wondering what the odds are of the passes selling out.

She doesn’t say anything else about it; she just says everyone’s stressed and was traumatized by losing APs, and she’ll update if she gets more info. Seems like there’s not a reason to think anything will run out on opening day.

I assume this isn't possible because of the dates... but I have a friend that will be in the parks 19, 20, 21 of August but of course the passes won't be sold just yet....

Is there any convoluted way that you guys can think of where they can make use of the existing tickets but also upgrade them to a pass? They've already bought three days of tickets... there isn't any way to call and get that extended to four days right? I was kind of thinking that maybe they could get tickets for one day longer than they'll be in the parks and then "save" that last day to keep the ticket "open" and then upgrade that to the pass.

Do we know yet if tickets (that have been partially used) can be upgraded via the app, and would that only apply the unused days toward the cost of the AP?

If you have to do it in person, do both him and his wife have to be there in person to upgrade the ticket, or just both in person upon first entry into the park with the newly upgraded pass (and thus getting a photo taken.)

He's going to be back down there with me in October for just a short two day trip but his wife won't be.

Anyone see ANY option of applying some or all of the ticket costs they've already spent towards an AP and just having it backdated to either before the pass officially goes on sale (lol) or to the first day of the AP sales....

I think it's bizarre that Dream key parking starts the pass, but Believe Key parking doesn't. It makes no difference to me, I just find it odd.

It's because the parking is free with the Dream pass, so in order to use that benefit, you have to start the pass that day. Imagine someone buys a Dream pass on Aug 25 and doesn't have a park pass reservation until, like, October. But then they visit Downtown Disney every week betwern now and then and use their free parking in M&F. They will be getting the perks of the AP without having entered a park if they do that. They could rack up quite a lot of free parking that way. It wouldn't make sense.

I
In the past, when we have upgraded multi day tickets at the end of trip to an AP, every person had to be there at the ticket booth. I had to wake my child up after the Halloween party one trip to come down and be there to upgrade to an AP, so I remember it (not fondly)!!

I think they could change their 3 day tickets to 4 days, but they have to do it at the ticket window in person prior to the end of day 3 (I have heard many people trying to add a day to their tickets by phone and being told that they have to do that in person at the booth). Then that last day should stay valid until 13 days after the first day of use. So if the person from IG above that said you could upgrade a ticket to a Key in the APP is correct, then that might work for them. If they are local, they could just try the app and then go to the booth to upgrade if the app does not work.

Also, the value of a ticket (used or unused) is applied fully to the AP when you upgrade (at least that is how it used to work). It didn’t matter if it was used or not. But if the ticket is partially used, then the AP “start” date is back-dated to the first day of use of the ticket that you are upgrading to the pass. The upgrade must be done on the last day of eligibility of the ticket, or before. So whatever day 13 is after they use the ticket for the first day, they have to do the upgrade by then. So they should get the full price of their 4 day ticket applied to the price of the Key that they are upgrading to.

I have an unused 2-day ticket from AAA. The Disneyland helper I spoke with today didn't know if it was "upgradable" or not since it was third party. Anyone had any experience with this?

They were always upgradable in the past. If you upload it to your account, Disney wouldn't register any difference. They're not AAA tickets, they are Disney tickets that Disney has authorized AAA to sell at a slight discount.

ETA: I uploaded a hopper I bought before Covid from Getaway Today, and it was simply entered as a 3-day hopper. I don't see why I wouldn't be able to upgrade it, but I guess I'll find it soon!

Update on that report (sorry for the screenshots; I don’t have computer access):

the last pass the I had I went from I think the unlimited Premium level to the Signature level and that worked well for me since I rarely go during the Christmas and New Years holidays.

I'm kind of disappointed that there isn't something comparable. there is a large drop in benefits going from Dream to Believe.

because of the Covid uncertainty I may be sitting out for another year anyway so I may just stand by and see how the new passes work out.

I had a Signature pass and I find the Dream to be almost directly comparable, but I appreciate the lack of blackout dates, so that is a step up, I think. In order to get no blackout dates on the previous Signature Plus, you had to spend another $150. My last Signature pass with Maxpass was $1324. I feel like the additional days make up for the lack of Maxpass.

Disney’s lack of communication is always so frustrating! I wish they’d provide all the details upfront.

even if we can’t upgrade via the app on 8/25 it would be nice to be able to upgrade via the app on the last day of a trip which is what I’m planning on doing in November!

I’ve got to assume they’ll have a way to transfer existing reservations made on a ticket to a Key pass once upgraded. If not would that mean that I’d have to wait until I’m done in the parks on my last day to upgrade? Wouldn’t the ticket booths already be closed if I stayed till park closing? I don’t think myself or anyone else would want to have to cut their day short due to this..

You can upgrade at any time on your last day. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes, so don't leave it until closing time.

If you wanted to upgrade on your first day, you could always check reservation availability for the subsequent days for the key pass before doing it. At least that way you can take advantage of your discounts. You would have to scan into your first park day first, THEN head to the ticket booths to do the upgrade. As long as there are park reservations available, the CM should be able to transfer your reservations. They can do this right now for people who are upgrading tickets with reservations attached to them.
