Magic Going to Europe this Year?

Isreal is going to allow unvaccinated tourists starting March 1. A lot of countries are dropping testing and/or vaccine mandates. I've canceled two trips to Japan and nothing from them yet. They are still not allowing tourists, vaccinated, tested, or otherwise.

There is no doubt that the Magic is going to Europe... DCL has even modified payment deadlines in anticipation of differences in health protocols they may need to apply on some of the early departures from/to non-US ports.... Now, could we see some further itinerary changes... maybe... but I am not too worried at the moment...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it the past didn't they move payments dates closer to sail dates before they canceled them entirely.

cant remember for my 2020 cancellations but my 2021 ones they had changed the PIF to 60 days out just like they’ve still been doing but they weren’t changed to 30 days out, I don’t think this news for Magic & Wonder sailings is an indication they’ll be cancelled, I’m on one of the Wonder sailings it effects and fully expect we’ll be sailing

I agree. I think the change in PIF date reflects the uncertainty of the possible changes in entry rules for Canada (for the Wonder sailings that are affected) and Europe (for the Magic sailings that are affected). DCL may be waiting for better visibility on what those rules will be, so cruisers booked on the relevant itineraries can make informed decisions.

I definitely agree with this. I think for Europe, the information that @Intr3pid posted above is some of the clarification that DCL was looking for. Not sure about where Canada sits right now.

As an aside, it's not just DCL dealing with this. Aulani has had to navigate the State of Hawaii ever changing protocols for the past year or so...

yep that’s the exact reason I think is behind it too and makes total sense

My wife and I are booked B2B on the Vancouver-->Hawaii-->Vancouver. I still haven't booked airfare from the Washington DC area due to the uncertainty. My wife is not thrilled about possible exposure on the long flight, and possible positive test results and having to quarantine in Vancouver or Hawaii

Right now in many countries in Europe I think the concern is far less about the virus than the situation between Russia, The Ukraine and any potential sanctions and repercussions from the constant talk of fighting and a potential war. I should think that DCL are keeping a very watchful eye on that before they send a ship over!
Who knows what will happen but it’s pretty jittery in Europe right now.

If this all goes sideways cruising will be the least of our worries. I personally think covid will be over in a couple of months, but that doesn't necessarily mean life is going to be easy. It's like the lyrics from the Lady Antebellum song "the world keeps spinning faster into the next disaster".

Sums it up perfectly!

Waking up to to the news this morning... Covid just became the least of our worries when it comes to cruising Europe this summer.

As someone who lives in Europe, I'm not at all worried that whats happening in Ukraine will affect my day to day life or travel in Europe or travel to USA. The only thing, as far as I can see is that there are 2 DCL which it could affect
  1. July 30th, 2022 - 11-Night Northern Europe Cruise from Dover to Copenhagen (Amsterdam, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Nynashamn, Riga)
  2. August 10th, 2022 - 7-Night Northern Europe Cruise from Copenhagen (Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm)
Other than these 2 cruises, which have stops in St Petersburg, I don't think that DCL will have any other changes to their scheduled cruises due to the events in Ukraine.

Theres been conflicts and wars in that area since 2014 and while the new escalation is disturbing and horrific for the people of Ukraine, its not something that will have an impact on day to day life for the rest of Europe.

It reminds me of many years ago, when The Troubles were in Northern Ireland, which was basically a war, with bombing and shootings a daily occurrence. I live in Dublin, 2 hours drive from Belfast, and what was happening had no effect on my day to day life, other than watching it on the TV news like everyone else.

What I am curious about is whether the Northern Europe itineries might be changed due to potential sanctions on Russia and potentially the security situation there (there was a US warning out for potential bombings in St Petersburg and Moscow yesterday, for example).
Quoting myself now that the invasion has started - do people think they’d cancel the St Petersburg sailings in the event they can’t stop in Russia or just make the one/two port days there into sea days? I’ve always assumed that St Petersburg was the main draw on those cruises.

Map-Magic-11-Night-Northern-European-DVR-AMS-SEA-SEA-TAL-LED-LED-HEL-NYN-RIX-SEA-COP-768x450.jpg

my guess would be
  • Cancel
  • Shorten and remove Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Riga
  • Remove Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Riga, add sea days and maybe an different port such as Bruges in Belgium or Stavanger in Norway
For this cruise, August 10th, 2022 - 7-Night Northern Europe Cruise from Copenhagen (Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm)

Theres not that much options
  • Cancel
  • Remove Tallinn, St. Petersburg, and add sea days

If they sail even with modifications I could see a lot cancelling out of nervousness.

I agree!

So as long as the conflict remains contained to Ukraine and between Russia and Ukraine. However, several western european countries and the US have positioned military assets in Eastern Europe during the build up to this. If any of those countries try to get involved, I could see Russia swiftly taking steps to prevent them from doing so. Heck, Putin said as much a little more than 12 hours ago. If that happens, I fear all bets are off.

Watching this cautiously and hoping this is as bad as it gets.

And there is the exact fear. What is at the moment contained to those Baltic countries all bets are off as to whether it will stay that way and even if the posturing is just that DCL will be watching with caution.

While I think this may not affect the Med, or British Isles/Iceland/Norway itineraries, I definitely think that DCL would have no desire to risk the Baltic itineraries. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if they switched those to routes out of the UK.

This is a little more than a little skirmish in Ireland. This involves Russia. Theres no way to know at this point if it will extend beyond Ukraine and escalate into something much larger. It’s certainly going to affect energy prices and the global economy.
