Why are magic bands not used on Disney Cruises? It seems to make so much more sense than to continue using cards.

Maybe the Wish will be fitted for MB usage. But for now, it's just the KTTW card. Probably too costly to change the system.

seems silly that they can't use the same technology they use for all of WDW

I know a lot of people like the Magic bands. I don't like wearing anything on my wrist, so I personally prefer having a card in a lanyard.

I would love to use magic bands! I hate wearing a lanyard around my neck so I was always having to carry a purse around to keep my KTTW card on me. And if they could work the technology so that I could use my existing magic bands, that would be great because I have some super cute ones! ;)

You can't use a magic band to get back on a cruise ship in a foreign port. The KTTW card has your name, ship and cruise date on it; the magic band would not give the same information to the people working at the cruise docks.

The biggest issue is that the KTTW card is what's used in ports to gain access to the dock when returning to the ship.

Who's going to pay for the necessary equipment/training for magic band readers in every port DCL docks at?

It's been suggested that both bands and cards be used, but that would cost extra to provide everyone with both.

Good points! I thought I heard some other cruise lines use bracelets (Princess?) What do they do at the port in that case?

I believe the Medallion tags (not necessarily a bracelet) is still being introduced. But I'm not real sure about how it works. Not all ships have the technology for it. I think it's only used while onboard, so everyone still gets the card for returning to the ship.

Thanks for the info!

OK, I did a little research. The Medallion program is used onboard and in port. I'm not sure how it works, but it seems that it contains all the information that's normally included on the ship's card. If you're on a Medallion cruise, you can go to Guest Services and request a card.

The Medallion is just a disc that you can put in various holders. Necklace, bracelet, just a holder (sort of like a card).

I'm not sure I will like it, if I'm ever on a Medallion cruise. They did have issues when first introduced, due to the proximity sensors. I've read where random room doors were being unlocked when someone with a Medallion walked by (not their rooms). But, I think that's been fixed.

I find it a bit off-putting that, by just walking into a bar/lounge the bartender knows you're there and what you drink.

Wow! That’s great info! Thanks!! 😊

So it seems magic bands could be possible but probably a lot of $ would have to be put into it!
