June 2016 will be my first trip to DW in about 10 years (been to DL many times).
As for the magic bands, are these free for onsite guests (we plan on staying at AoA) or are they a separate purchase?

Love lurking on the boards and soaking up all of the info. You people are awesome!

Thanks for the quick reply. Another question: do I have to have tickets attached to the room reservation as a package or will we get bands with a room only res?

all onsite guests receive a magic band at no extra cost.

they are used as your room key so even if you don't have a package and just a room reservation you will get magic bands.

As a Disney resort guest, you and everyone in your room get MagicBands. Room-only or a package. If it's room-only, it doesn't matter much where tickets came from. Some buy from Disney only, separate from Disney resort reservation. Some buy from a third party discounter, like AAA or UndercoverTourist. UT is where I bought ours. Guaranteed A+ service from UT.

Create a MyDisneyExperience account in Disneyworld online for you and your traveling family. Your MDE account is a collection point for info about your resort reservation(s), dining ADRs, tickets, MagicBands, FP+ bookings, Memory Maker (optional). Follow categories listed in your MDE to add info about your trip. About 60 days out you can customize all your MagicBands with color and name on band. They will be mailed to you about 30 days out (or less).

Tickets should be linked to MDE to make FP+ bookings at 60 days out for you and family. MagicBands can be used at park entry Mickey Head tapstiles to access your MDE account for ticket info stored there. At ride and entertainment venues, MagicBands can be used at MH tapstiles for FP+ entries you booked. MagicBands can be used for room charging (set up with CC). MagicBands are used at dining facilities for ADR arrival, and using dining credits (with package). MagicBands are used for room entry. MagicBands are used for resort guard gate entry. Laundry rooms use MagicBands for entry. etc. etc.

I have a question to add here if it's ok. We will have a room only reservation, which means we will receive MBs in the mail before our trip. Our tickets will be linked to MDE by the 60 day FP+ window. Will the tickets assigned to each person automatically be on each person's MB?

nothing is on the magic band.
if your magic bands are linked and your tickets are linked the magic bands will be able to access the ticket info for each person.

You need to link your tickets to the MagicBand yourself through the My Disney Experience website or app. Because tickets can and do expire, you could have a MagicBand on your account for this trip with this set of tickets. Then go again in six months with another set of tickets so you can link those to the bands for that trip. Or, my example. I have MagicBands and they are linked to my Annual Pass which we, unfortunately, cannot renew thanks to a job disappearing. However, once we do return, I can link my new tickets to my existing bands.
