Magic Bands Safe from Thieves?

Based on the um, "security experts" I've met, they're not likely to take any laptops. Theirs is probably 'way nicer than any they might find at WDW.

I believe they would do it for the thrill of the hunt, and to boast at the next Hackercon that they beat Disney's RFID system.

That's why tying the MB id number to a database is a better solution than storing data on the MBs themselves. They can clone ID numbers all day long, but to actually use them will require access to pins and/or account data, which is tucked away in another system.

Would any real hacker brag that they cracked Disney's RFID system? Isn't that basically the equivalent to riding a bicycle with training wheels?

I don't know it's probably right up there with hacking into a major government it's something big.

This will be our first trip with MBs. If we lose one, I deactivate it on MDE then what? Do we buy one while there & have it programmed? Somewhere I thought I read the on property purchased bands couldn't be programmed like your original band. :confused3

The band isn't programmed so much as MDE is. You simply log onto your MDE and enter the digits from the new purchase. It should be instantaneous.

Ahhhh, good to know. Thank you, MolonLabe.

We all have credit cards your information is likely to be taken from there than someone breaking into an internal Disney system to steal yoir fast passes or come into your hotel room...

If your concerned overtly about safety we'll never try something new...somethijg always has some concern of safety.

If you are a DVC member or AP holder, you can get a slider that will hold it closed.

If you are very worried you could always put tape (duct tape or any scotch tape) around the closure (positioned as the slider would be). I really wouldn't worry about it, but if you are worried this may ease your mind?

You mean like the people who steal strollers from MK? lol. People will steal anything. Seriously though, thefts happens in the parks all the time, it's normal when you get 50,000 people mingling together. It's not something to be paranoid about, just something to be aware of.

The most stolen cars for many years running was something like a 1989 Toyota Camry and I think it was 1992 Accord. When balancing out all the numbers based on ease of theft, desirability, volume of those types of cars on the road they came across something interesting... lax owners. After all "people have better things to steal than this old thing". Some people steal casio watches some people steal Rolex's....

I think that was the point of everyone who posted here. It's no more (or less) to worry about than your credit card.

The good thing is, since it's "new", it can get people thinking (again) about things they've taken for granted for many years now, such as credit card / RFID security, or the lack thereof.

Or counting on filing your own tax returns! Can't take that for granted anymore!

Again, cloning the RFID device would be easy. Swiping the data record information is the trick.

Agreed. If you are over withholding so you get a tax refund you are taking a big risk. Much better to be safe and owe the IRS money at the end of the year.
