Magic Bands - really trivial (probably lame) question

And people aren't likely to get them mixed up because they are wearing them most of the time. When you take it off in your room, you'll know where you put yours versus where Grandma put hers.

Exactly.

For offsiters all they are are tickets, really, so make sure people keep track of their tickets and it should be fine. My cousin and I keep getting the same color for Princess and we haven’t had a problem yet. We know where we put our stuff.

We know where we put our stuff too - but things happen.

They are a little more than tickets since the FPs are linked and we don't all have the same FPs. And we don't all have the same ticket types either.

Plus one person in our party of 7 will be responsible for linking these to MDE in advance of the trip (prior to distributing them). So I'd like to make it less likely we have a mix up before we even get there.

Hence my appreciation for the suggestions to make that a bit easier.

You could also just tell people no duplicate colors and it's first come, first serve. Adults should be able to live with any color band they get.

FCDub - if that were up to me, you betcha!

However, at the risk of stepping into something, there are 4 females in our group and only 3 "feminine" colors and I expect they will all want pink or purple.

Let me emphasize the title of my thread:
Magic Bands - really trivial (probably lame) question.

Because, well - it's really a trivial and probably lame question.

Again, I appreciate the constructive suggestions. (Thanks for the link, AnnMichele!)

Er, actually quite a few 'females' on these boards have reported having 3 or more colors of bands (to match with assorted outfits), and er, the 'females' in our family actually don't choose pink or purple. (FYI we don't match outfits either. Mostly, we only minimally discussed it at all. It kind of went like this, "You're getting red, okay?" "Um, okay."

Personally, If they didn't come with our hotel stays, I wouldn't have bothered buying them. I'd just use my park tickets the same as we did for many years before the bands came along.

Otherwise, your concern is probably a bit misplaced.

1. Some of the adults will likely prefer NOT having to wear a band, especially if they have to buy it- which would solve your problem right there. Truly, I've been to WDW with and without bands many times. Truly, if you can't use it as your room key, then there's REALLY not much point in buying them. I mean if the kids want one, okay, but the adults will be just fine without them, perhaps even better. You CAN put your tickets in a lanyard. That's the norm at Universal, and it works VERY WELL! Otherwise you can just keep it in your wallet.

2. The only way the bands are of almost any use at all, is if you KEEP them ON. You put them on in the airport- before you get to ME (or while driving if are not using ME), and then you keep it on until you get back to the airport.

3. Unless you have someone who really doesn't like wearing the band...in which case, you'd be better off NOT buying a band for that person, but if you do end up getting one for everyone anyhow...most of you won't be taking the bands off once you put them on.

4. In which case, a sharpie works fine to personalize them.

Actually, I always carry a mini-sharpie at WDW. While I wouldn't worry about the bands, you WILL want to personalize your refillable mugs! And maybe a few other items along the way. Sharpie is also great if you plan to use gift cards. It is easy to mark the balance o the card.

My red band got sunscreen on it and turned “cloudy”. I could not get it off, even with soap and water. So my cloudy band was easy to identify. :(

FWIW - I have bands, but I hate wearing them. My wrist is small, so I have to tear off the gray outer part or have a ridiculous amount of excess band annoying me. But then the band fits relatively tight - I suppose like a watch, except that I hate wearing watches. On our trip this week I forgot to put my band on and realized it as we were on the bus, so I didn't want to go back and get it. I did have my ticket with me and just used that during the day, and honestly I really preferred it to having something on my wrist. Just a personal opinion of course, but it is perhaps possible that not everyone in your group wants to wear one? Or maybe someone would prefer to take the puck out and put it into one of the accessories they have that attach it to a purse or something similar.

Thanks for creating this thread because I've gotten some good ideas for future trips assuming that after the 50th we'll still have MB 2.0s.

Anyways I will say for our September 2017 trip I chose blue because it's my favorite color and my husband chose purple as it's the color he liked out of the options available.

Only you know your traveling party just know that truly when it comes to the colors feminine and masculine characteristics don't mean much :flower1:

We got magic band skins from this site. Saw YouTube review that compared it to Etsy vendor. Reviewer liked these better.

I only have personal experience from this one. We have worn them through 2 park days thus far, and they’re great.

All of that info is in MDE. You don't need a magicband to access any of it.

I have small wrists, too. I always have to tear the gray part off and then it still wraps around my wrist a ways. It's never tight on me and I actually love wearing my Magic Band, but I wear a watch every day.

I'll also add that I'm a female and I've never gotten purple or pink before. I usually get blue, red, or green.

If your Magic Band is just a little bit too big, you can cut off some of the excess with scissors. That gives you a size which is smaller than the way it comes, but bigger than if you tore the gray part off.

Thank you for the mention. We do have over 500 different designs now on the site including glitter and glow in the dark options. You can also create any of your own designs that you want on the site. And don't forget that we also have the official DIS designs too! :)

Who knew my "trivial and lame" question would spark such conversation?

Ah - the old "physical ticket" option. We don't have those. So if we decide to forget the whole Magic Band thing, we'd have to get them.

And how do you do FPs without the band? I know the info is in MDE, but can you use that to get on a ride with a FP?

EDIT - and we don't all have a single ticket for the entire trip. So if we used physical tickets, would we have to link FPs to a specific ticket? EXAMPLE: two people have a 1 day ticket and left over 4 day hoppers. How would it know to apply the FPs properly using the physical ticket? I'm sure it can be done, but it sounds like the Magic Bands make it easier.

While not necessary, isn't' the band worth the "it's all on my wrist or in my pocket/purse" convenience? (Granted, less so since we're at the Dolphin and therefore no room key / charging privileges).

I purposely said "I may be stepping in something..." when I mentioned the color thing. I just happen to know the females in our group very well. Certainly not meaning to stereotype / generalize in anyway.

When I stayed at the Dolphin in 2015, we got room key cards that I believe also functioned as our tickets--maybe I'm getting confused, maybe we had separate cards for the tickets. Regardless, at some point when we got all present and checked in we had physical cards that worked basically the same as a MagicBand in terms of accessing tickets and FP. We had pretty simple ticket arrangements, though; each of us just had one multi-day ticket for length of stay. The only thing the MB could do that our cards couldn't was send a signal to the attractions so our ride photos would automatically link to our account and any special "extras" would pop up (like our names displaying in It's a Small World, etc., which only works about half the time anyway). We did buy MBs just because we liked the idea of them; there's not a ton of objective benefit to doing so but you certainly can.

As for "stepping in something," I think the issue is less about you stating that the women in your group would prefer pink and purple (I don't know them and you do), but the way you phrased it. Like many women, I have a kneejerk reaction to women being referred to as "females" because it's just...weird. It's grammatically weird, it comes off like you're deliberately avoiding the use of a more normal word like "women," and quite frankly I see it used that way in the context of misogynistic commentary a lot more often than I see it used in any other context. I'm not saying it's inherently misogynistic in and of itself, just that it pings up as a red flag in my brain because that's the way I'm used to seeing it used. That combined with the rest of the phrasing of the sentence made it sound like a stereotypical statement ("of course females like feminine colors") rather than a personal statement ("I'm aware that the four women in my group are known to prefer colors that are traditionally considered feminine"). It sounds in this follow-up comment like you meant the latter; I'm just trying to explain why it came off sounding like the former.

Wow - did it occur to you (YawningDodo) that not all the females in the group are adults? A female child is not typically called a "woman" any more than a male child is called a "man".

And again, I am certainly NOT stereotyping in any way. I went out of my way to state that I'm speaking ONLY for the individuals in my particular group.

Trust me - I have a daughter and 3 (soon to be four) granddaughters. I certainly hope the 4 granddaughters (and any grandsons that may happen someday) live in a world without gender stereotypes or any type of prejudice (conscious or not).

If we've become so sensitive that using the term 'female' triggers a thought that the speaker is misogynistic, we may be off on a very wrong direction socially.
