Magic Bands - Didn't like them

DH & I returned yesterday. Neither of us liked the MB. We find it unlikely, but we hope Disney gets enough negative reviews of the MBs to give a choice of the MBs or a normal hotel room/account card.

I realize a lot of people like the MBs & feel they work well & are convenient. I'm glad for all of you.

1. Shape is wrong - will not lay flat on a wrist. The battery part humps up, will not lie flat.

2. If it is fit tightly so will not spin on the wrist, it causes sweating under the band & causes some squeezing, marking, irritation.

3. If it is fit loosely, it slides up & down the wrist & turns, always requiring the other hand to pull it down & set it upright. Plus, sometimes we wore long sleeved shirts which were buttoned at the wrist. The band would slide up under the sleeve & require the other hand to set it upright - sometimes requiring an unbuttoning of the shirt sleeve. This was a real pain when we had something in our other hand (which we always seemed to have). I hated it for opening our room door, had other hand full.

4. Must be taken off to reach the pad that opens the resort gate - at least at POFQ - or open car door & step out (not!).

5. We had to contort our wrist at out room door when/if the band had twisted on our arm, or use the other hand to position it. Often the door jam blocked our hand/wrist from being at the needed angle, unless we used other hand to position it. I really griped about this because we come/go a lot to/from our room.

6. We wear our watches on our left arm. So our MBs on right arm. Not a big deal during low crowd times, but at parks must first touch MB to Mickey & then touch finger pad - does take a little longer.

7. DH's MB worked at MK, but not at DHS. Worked at some food places, but not all. He never knew what would happen. For food, I was with him except once - POR. The cashier had him take the band off & she entered the # from the underside of the band. The other times, we used my MB for food.

8. Since I didn't like the MB, I ended up keeping it in my purse/bag & pulling it out like I would a KTTW card. But that was a pain because obviously it does not fit as well into a bag/purse as a thin flat card does.

MB EXPIRATION - I asked if we are supposed to bring back our current MB at our next checkin. Was advised that we could if wanted, but a new one will be waiting, because the maximum life of the MB battery may only be 2 years or less. I asked what happens to unexpired park tickets on non-accessible MBs. I was advised Disney does not have that answer yet - they are working on this issue. I asked so how do guests "prove" they have unexpired tickets. Answer - "Hopefully" the MDE account will still show the tickets. The guest should print their account info with the remaining tickets. My thought, but I didn't ask, is how can the guest prove the tickets weren't spent after the print was made. I did ask the above questions of a few CMs at our POFQ front desk, concierge, & guest relations & always got the same answers.

That last thing you posted is a clueless CM answer. The MB, old or new, if connected with the same MDE account, will show your old tickets. The MB is just a pointer to your account.

Points 1-6 can be eliminated if you don't wear them on your wrist. Most people I know that have been recently liked having them hooked on their belt loop or on their backpack.

Point 7 can happen with KTTW also.

But what a pain! The bands are meant to wear on the wrist...if disney is going to make this new system, at the very least make them comfortable to wear.

Why not touch the finger pad with your left hand?

I think people keep forgetting or don't understand that there is no info stored on the band. The band just "activates" or looks up what is on your account which is on a computer. That is how if u have multiple bands you can use any of them, they all point to one account.

Excellent reminder!!!

And if you ask at check-in, they will still give you a KTTW card, but you have to specifically ask for it.

It's unfortunate to have a disappointing experience at WDW. We were part of the initial MB test last August and while we had a few glitches entering the parks, overall our experience with the MBs was positive (it was nice not having to pull my card out all the time!). Every new process is going to have some bugs to sort out. That said, hopefully the bugs we encountered will be lessened as we visit the parks again in a few weeks!!

Comfortable for whom? Every single person in the world? My husband and I don't wear anything on our wrists. We haven't experienced Magic Bands yet but if they are uncomfortable *for us*, we will put them in a bag or in a pocket and continue on.

Magic Bands are really nothing more than a way to carry around an RFID chip that stores your information. Just because they are *Magic* and *Band* means nothing.

OP, the sweating issue can be helped by buying or making a coverband. The ones for purchase are of a "swimsuit-like" material which feels cool on the skin and doesn't allow for sweat to pool under it.

And both DH and I found that if we positioned the mickey head on the outer side of our wrists, rather than on the top of our wrists, not only did it fit more comfortably, but it was extremely simple without contortions to use them on the FP+ or entrance poles (you do have to line yourself up with the correct side...this was easy for us as I wear it on my left and DH on his right, so we just walked side by side through FP+ entrance using the same-side poles).

The doors, yeah, that's not easy. The one person in our party who had no problems opening the doors is also double-jointed and could bend his wrist in the right way. But we didn't find the RFID cards to be ANY easier...the pads are just too close to the handle, and it makes it a pain, especially combined with the heavy doors.

I think the very fact they are marketed as bracelets should mean it is worn on the wrist, that is the idea and should across the board be comfortable.

I didn't have any problem wearing the MB in August when it's hot, or last trip. We got back last week. I thought they'd be hot & sweaty in August, but for us they weren't. I didn't see a problem with tapping MB then finger? I never put my finger on reader at exactly same time as I slid card in either :confused3

What I didn't like was the new Tiered system of FPs :(

The battery is supposed to be good for at least 3 years. Once testing is over, they will want you to use the same band, if it is in a good time period, if list you pay to replace. We had an interview after one test period and this is what we were told by a manager.

I have used the MB for one trip. I had some issues with it being uncomfortable and sweating under it. But I loved the convenience. On my 4th day I bought a cover for the MB in my resort store. That solved 95% of my complaints.

My original question - comfortable to whom? "Across the board" means (to me) every single person who comes to Disney World. It's not going to be comfortable to myself or my husband because we don't wear anything on our wrists. But that's not going to stop us from going to Disney World so not quite certain of the problem here. You don't have to wear the bands on your wrist. Why is the instance out there that the bands NEED to be worn on the wrist and cannot be taken off at all? Can someone clue me in?

With all due respect to the OP, a few of the items listed sound nitpicky. Almost as if he or she were looking for things to hate about the bands. Based on my own experience, I felt compelled to respond to a few of them:

1. Shape is wrong - will not lay flat on a wrist. The battery part humps up, will not lie flat.

I noticed this when we first received them in the mail. Did you receive yours in the mail or at the front desk? One way to rectify this is by customizing them online ahead of time and then when you receive them in the mail, take them out and lay them flat until your trip. It seems as though since they are stored closed in a "circle" instead of flat, it does contort the shape. We laid ours flat and they were fine after several days.

2. If it is fit tightly so will not spin on the wrist, it causes sweating under the band & causes some squeezing, marking, irritation.

I guess irritation would depend on how sensitive your skin is. The material and width of the band does cause sweating, but it was nothing that bothered us and unless we wanted to hate the band, wasn't something we couldn't get used to.

I'm having a hard time picturing a loose band, with its size, going up under a button down shirt sleeve (the kind of sleeve that buttons). Unless the button down shirt is greatly oversized. We liked to wear our band looser and wore hoodies most of the time we were there, and the band never went under our sleeves. We did find that the Mickey head would slide to the side of our wrist from time to time, but that was it.

5. We had to contort our wrist at out room door when/if the band had twisted on our arm, or use the other hand to position it. Often the door jam blocked our hand/wrist from being at the needed angle, unless we used other hand to position it. I really griped about this because we come/go a lot to/from our room.

I'm sorry, but I'm finding this one to be an exaggeration. We stayed at CSR which has similar doors and jambs as POFQ, and not only were the key pads quick when we held our wrists up, but they were also not in a spot that was awkward. I guess it's possible POFQ set them up in a different spot on the door than other resorts, but this would be the first I'm hearing about it.

6. We wear our watches on our left arm. So our MBs on right arm. Not a big deal during low crowd times, but at parks must first touch MB to Mickey & then touch finger pad - does take a little longer.

Easy fix here. Hold your right arm up to the scanner for the band, and cross your left arm over to the finger print scanner and do them simultaneously. We saw a lot of people do this, and my fiance did this as well since he is left handed and wore his band on his right arm. We did see a lot of people scan first, finger print second and I was under the impression that they were just not told that they could do them at the same time, saving themselves (and the line) a few seconds.

I guess it's all in perspective.. if you go in with an open mind and positive thoughts, you'll enjoy the band. If you go in with a negative perception and expect to hate it, you will.

We have stayed twice at POFQ using the bands and didn't have any problems opening the doors. We aren't double jointed or anything.
