Magic Bands are Flushable and Other Lessons Learned. A winter 2014 Trip Report

Haha!! I love your "other Cape" reference. I tell my mother all the time she lives on the "other Cape." I think she doesn't understand though. Because she thinks there is only one Cape in MA and doesn't recognize C.A. Lol!

...and I just have to say that Peter Pan is a cutey patootie! I think I just melted at the smile on his face when he was hugging your sweet granddaughter.

I love the characters! My kids have never wanted to do lines for them - but luckily we have a couple of character meals planned!

YAY...a bounceback at BC and F&W...simply wonderful! And I am very jealous!

Love Ohana and it looks like the girls had fun with all the activities during dinner! I can't wait to get back there!

One post read and I am SO in!! Loving this so far. I will have to catch up later today (have to go to this little thing called work..... :headache: ). ::sigh:: Alas, TRs and the DIS boards must wait.

Anyway, I don't know if you get into it later (only read the first chapter so far!) but you are clearly from my neck of the woods, which is WICKED COOL!! :rotfl: I was born in Boston, raised just north of there, and defected to NH as an adult (I am now trying to defect to somewhere warm, but that's another story....).

Can't wait for more.....I'll be back! :goodvibes

.

Thanks for stopping by LegoMom3  and I well understand how work interfers with DIS time...and writing up trip reports :confused3

Yup, can always tell someone from the Boston area - sometimes our terminology is a wicked giveaway...

Two of my siblings also defected to NH although one of them now winters in Florida. I think that is ideal. Not so sure I would want to live in Florida in the summer - but spending the cold, icy winter in Florida sounds like a plan.

Haha!! I love your "other Cape" reference. I tell my mother all the time she lives on the "other Cape." I think she doesn't understand though. Because she thinks there is only one Cape in MA and doesn't recognize C.A. Lol!

Welcome DVCJones and thanks for reading along.

The other Cape reference - you must be from around these parts to have picked out that reference ;). Do prefer that most people automatically head to Cape Cod when vacationing in Massachusetts, keeps C.A. less crowded in the summer - works for me!

Great pics! :)

Thank you for checking out my Trip Report wiigirl!

I actually had not planned on doing a trip report and only decided to attempt one after we had returned home. So actually, most of my photos feature my DGD's - but in all reality they are the main reason that I enjoyed our vacation so much. Seeing Disney through the eyes of children is wonderment in of itself.

Subbing. Your DGDs are too cute!

Thanks Pam and glad you are reading along!!

I am so fortunate that my DD lives close by and I am able to see my DGD's frequently. They are so much fun!!

...and I just have to say that Peter Pan is a cutey patootie! I think I just melted at the smile on his face when he was hugging your sweet granddaughter.

I love the characters! My kids have never wanted to do lines for them - but luckily we have a couple of character meals planned!

Peter Pan was amazing with the girls. What I did not get a photo of was DGD5 planting a smooch on Peter's cheek to which Wendy stated that she would not tell Tinkerbelle since Tinkerbelle was known to be jealous. DGD5 decided that Peter Pan was going to be one of her boyfriends and to heck with Tinkerbelle.

The only long line we encountered was to see the Frozen sisters - more about that later in the trip report, unreal. Most of other the lines were not bad plus we did a few FP's for character meets and we also had the great luck of running into Character Palooza at HS which was not crowded at all. The character meals are great too, especially Hollywood and Vine for those of the Disney Jr set. I can understand your children not wanting to wait in line though when there is so many other things to do.

YAY...a bounceback at BC and F&W...simply wonderful! And I am very jealous!

Love Ohana and it looks like the girls had fun with all the activities during dinner! I can't wait to get back there!

Hi Tammi, always so nice to read a post by you :flower3:

Before you know it you will be heading to Disney for the Princess Half Marathon and your cupcake crawl!

Phew! I caught up! Sounds like a great start to a trip mishaps and all. I can't wait to hear more about your trip.popcorn::

Subscribing. I'm relatively new to this site and this is the first TR I've followed, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it thus far. Your granddaughters are adorable. I'm hoping to learn lots from you, as our first trip is planned for Sept. Thank you for taking the time to detail your trip!

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow (Jan 30)

We decided not to rush and stopped to have breakfast at the food court. Our thought process was that the first wave of folks heading to Hollywood Studios would be happily on their way and we could avoid the jockeying for position that seemed to occur in the morning when folks were heading to the parks. You know what they say about the best laid plans…

For breakfast, the Bounty Platter was a hit with DSIL and DH while DD and I were all about the cinnamon rolls. The girls loved the Mickey waffles but they liked coloring more. POFQ has a small, activity table set up in the Food Court and it was a nice diversion for them.

On our way to the bus station we stopped to talk to Arniel. DGD5 remembered him from our previous trip – he is truly one of the nicest people you will meet. Quick with a smile and friendly greeting and I never got the impression that his enthusiasm was feigned. He seemed to really enjoy his position as an ambassador for the resort. The girls looked forward to the coins he would present them each time their paths crossed. Those coins wasted no time heading into the fountain. DGS5 would toss her coin and make a wish confident that her wish would come true, since, after all, it was Disney and they say that wishes come true at Disney she insisted. What was so sweet, was that her wish was not for herself but rather to restore the hearing of someone she loved and she wished this same wish each and every time she tossed a coin into the fountain. DD was a bit concerned since it was not likely that this wish would come true and DD was trying to determine the best way to explain this to her –no one wants to ruin the idealistic thinking of a child caught up in the magic of Disney.

It was raining on and off and cool. Raincoats were the order of the day. We had also begun packing a towel or two and had also packed the girls “Sofia” dresses for our lunch ADR at Hollywood and Vine. The dresses were carefully folded up in those state of the art vacuum bags. DSIL had become a bit of a fanatic in packing his backpack and did not really relish having to stuff in two dresses along with snacks, a change of clothing for the girls, diaper supplies, autograph books, pepsi, etc, etc. He had a system going and the dresses just about put him over the top. Regardless, the girls HAD to have their Sofia dresses and there was no way they were going to wear those to the park in the rain. They had to be presentable to meet Sofia who was one of their idols from Disney Jr and could not be presented as drowned rats.

Getting on the bus did not go as smoothly as we had hoped, seemed everyone else thought it best to have breakfast first this morning also. We got into the line and waited. Know that I am a proactive line person. If you are in line in front of me that is fine but do not try to butt in front or sneak in from the side. Now, don’t get me wrong, I do not make a scene or yell or anything. I simply position myself in front of said line cutter and quietly advise them that their behavior is unacceptable and suggest that they get in line and wait like everyone else. Some folks simply ignore me and bully their way on the bus and if they are going to be that self-serving, so be it. My family usually tries to distance themselves from me during these exchanges but I don’t think bad behavior should go unchallenged, yes, even at Disney. I mean, some people truly have a sense of entitlement.

Getting to HS early allowed us to see and do a lot once again. Toy Story Mania was our first stop and we were glad that we had a FP since even this early in the morning lines were forming. The girls loved wearing the 3D glasses although DGD1.9 did not understand that you had to give the glasses back. This was the first meltdown of the day for her, luckily her attention can usually be diverted pretty quickly so the auditory damage was minimal for those around us. Lesson to be learned, be sure to bring suitable diversional items for young children.

We also saw the Little Mermaid Show, Disney Junior On Stage, The Muppets Vision3D and the Great Movie Ride to name a few. DGD1.9 was thrilled since she got to wear the 3D glasses again in the Muppet 3D. DSIL was not overly enthused since he knew she would not be so thrilled once she realized that these glasses had to be returned to the bin.

In a twist of fate, the folks standing behind us in line for the Great Movie Ride were the same family from Cape Cod that we had met yesterday on the monorail. We thought that was pretty unusual. They were leaving the next day so we realized that we would probably not see them again ruining any chances of becoming Disney friends while waiting.

Speaking about friends – I was hoping to casually run into a few folks from the DIS. As I mentioned previously, I am still a newbie around these parts so really did not have any DIS friends to speak of. But I had read on a thread that DIS folks would attach a DIS Mickey head to their person so if another DIS person was in the vicinity they could do a bit of DIS bonding. A wonderful person from the Creative DISigns made a Mickey head for me which I printed up and proudly attached to my pocketbook and I also had one of these DIS Mickey heads on my window at POFQ just in case a fellow DIS type was strolling by and guess what?!. Nothing, nadda not one DIS sighting and believe me, I had my eyes peeled for these DIS Mickey heads. I guess that was the wrong approach. Anyway…..

It was soon time to check into Hollywood and Vine for lunch. We were a bit early so DD and I brought the girls into the restroom to turn them into little Sofia’s. DD decided to keep their shirts on under the dresses since we knew we would have to wait outside a bit longer and it was still cold and rainy. We tried to find a spot that was somewhat sheltered on the porch which was on a bench against the window. The girls were so excited to peer into the windows to catch glimpses of the Disney Jr characters inside. The folks that were sitting on the inside next to the window were pretty good natured about the girls staring at them. I kept trying to divert the girl’s attention since I understand how awkward it can be to try and eat and have someone watching you. Thankfully, we were called before too very long.

The food at the Disney Character Buffets are pretty similar from my perspective, good but certainly not something that I would gush over. DH and DSIL love these buffets since there is plenty of food to choose from, you can take your time eating, and no one seems to care how much food you consume. Knowing their love for buffets I had made sure to pack tums and pepto bismol for the trip.

For DD and me, it is more about the character interaction and watching the girls light up when they saw their favorite Disney characters come to life. This is the second time we have gone to this buffet and both times the character interaction was exceptional. Plus the CM that lead the children in singing and dancing are high energy and enthusiastic. DGD5 loves the parades and was able to participate in two parades since DH and DSIL were leisurely enjoying their lunch, making sure to pace themselves accordingly.

DGD1.9 was thrilled to meet the characters and could not wait to have her turn to hug them. The joy on her face will stay with me forever – of course it helps that we have a few photos to mark the occasion.

A big hit from the dessert menu for the girls was chocolate covered marshmallows. DGD1.9 was all about the chocolate but could not quite understand the marshmallow.

After our meal DD and family decided to head back to the resort, to rest up for our reservations for the Tomorrowland Terrace Fireworks Dessert Party. DH and I decided to try the Animation Academy which we had never done. The animator allowed the group to pick which character we would draw and I am glad that it was Tigger that won out since he looked like the least complicated to draw. I could see where young children would not really enjoy this. We did enjoy our drawing lesson and if you are looking for something different to do, you might want to check it out.

DH and I headed back to POFQ to dry out and get ready for our trip to the MK. It was still cold and rainy and we were not sure if the fireworks would be occurring. We dressed warmly and headed out. On the bus trip to the MK the bus driver led the bus in singing happy birthday to DG5 – she shyly acknowledged the singing, said thank you and gave her usual little wave. DD and family stopped for a quick photo in front of the Castle. DSIL ever present back pack can be clearly seen.

We decided to take a turn on the PeopleMover since we still had some time before the Dessert Party was to begin. This is one of my favorite attractions at the MK. Usually no line and restful, yes, the PeopleMover is a restful ride. While on this ride we noticed the Tomorrowland Dance Party with the Incredibles was going on. DD decided we had enough time to check this out, after the Tusker House incident no way was I going to make that call. DGD5 loves, loves to dance and when they asked if anyone wanted to get in the middle and solo her little hand jutted up in an instant and she danced her heart out. Much to my dismay, I cannot find any photos and I was pretty sure that I had taken a few photos and a video but the truth is in the reality that I cannot seem to locate these much to my dismay.

The view of the Wishes and the Fireworks was excellent at the TomorrowLand Terrace. The desserts, so many sweets and all very good. Especially the huge, chocolate covered strawberries, my personal favorite. The hot coffee and hot coco hit the spot and it was an enjoyable night. We left shortly after this and headed back to POFQ for the night. We were all pretty cold by this time and I wished we thought to bring mittens and winter hats for the girls.

As usual, on my return to the room I searched for towel animals, thinking perhaps Mousekeeping was being a bit coy and had hide one. Still nothing. I was truly perplexed. I mean, each and every day we left a Mousekeeping tip in a festive Disney envelope that we had printed up for the trip. I kept my room clean. Heck, whenever DGD’s would leave a cup or other item in my room I made certain that I returned it to their room pronto. DD was not as fussy about keeping her room as ship shape as I was so it was only right that I returned clutter to the room that it originated from. Don’t get me wrong, her room was not a mess. It was as tidy as one could expect considering she had two little girls who had lots of stuff they needed to have close by, including cheerios. So I figured if any room would get a towel animal it would be mine, seems I figured wrong.

Before we left for the MK, I had DH crank up the heat in our room to about 74 degrees since I knew we would be cold on our return. DD and DSIL prefer things a bit cooler so left their heat off. Guess whose room everyone ended up in? Yup, the warm room. DGD1.9 decided to hop in DH’s bed while DGD5 got ready for her usual spot next to me. Shortly thereafter DGD1.9 went and grabbed her Minnie and Baby Sully and joined her sister, along with her Minnie and Baby Boo to settle in next to me. I did love this special time with the girlsI had an arm around each girls as we chatted about our day. DGD1.9 had become quite enamored by the Happy Birthday song and she sang this over and over until she finally put her hands behind her head, looked skyward and feel asleep. DSIL, who seemed to sense when his daughters were asleep, came into our room and brought each girl back to their room for the night. Now I could sleep…

The weather man said that tomorrow was supposed to be in the 70’s and not as rainy with some sun…wonderful news.

Phew! I caught up! Sounds like a great start to a trip mishaps and all. I can't wait to hear more about your trip.popcorn::

Hi Betsy - thank you for coming over for a visit!

What would a trip be without mishaps :)

Hi lafemmega :wave2: and thank you for following along

I do hope you find some helpful information from this trip report and I am honored that you chose my trip report to read . With that said and not to diss myself too badly - know that their are many, many excellent trip reports out there. I read so many trip reports when I first started planning my trip and found them so helpful and informative.

I am a mere novice to trip report writing compared to many others on the DIS. Also, since I had not planned on doing a trip report my photos are heavy on the DGD's and slim on food and attraction pictures. :confused3

There is so much to learn about Disney and the DIS is the BEST resource that I have come across. Folks here are so welcoming and seem to really love to share their knowledge and expertise with all things Disney.

How exciting that you are heading to Disney in September!! I am so looking forward to returning to Disney in the fall also- we have not been to Disney in the fall for a few decades. You will have so much fun and planning does help I believe rather than heading into your vacation with no prior knowledge of all there is to experience.

Thanks for reading along...

Of course we don't know yet if it gets better, but so far I'm sorry about your lack of towel animals. Really, it is hit or miss with your MouseKeeper, despite any and all attempts on your part to coax some out of her! ;) It really just depends on who you get on any given day and his/her affinity for those little extra touches.

One of my favorite memories was actually our very first trip, and we were staying at All Star Movies. The kids were little (2, 4 and 7) and when we returned to our room the first afternoon, MouseKeeping had arranged their stuffed animals so they were hanging from various fixtures in the room, as if they'd been having their own party all day! The kids loved it....

.

I am right there with you about people and lines...and even worse when it comes to staking my claims on a place to watch the parades and wishes. I get there and don't you dare push you way in front of me...even if you have kids I am not budging. My first trip, I learned from my mistake and this latest trip a lady tried and failed to push her way in front of me at illuminations...WRONG! I stood my ground and she got MAD!

I love the picture of Sophia and the girls...her making the heart symbol was simply precious!

HMMMM...we have a couple of pairs of 3D glasses. The CM told my son to keep a pair!

I think you have really made the case for POR-FQ! Except for no towel animals! It is my first choice tied with Beach Club but if the race is as expensive as people are predicting no BC this trip!

As for DIS meets I have never found someone with one of those green DIS heads...even though I had one on my backpack, too! DISmets usually happen in planning groups when you meet people who are going the same time. PTR are the best thing to write and follow to meet people.

I have met a FEW amazing DISers! But more often most are just online friends...I can't wait until our TR. The ladies I am going with are all people I have met online but not in person...with the exception of Betsy!

cute story about them learning to curtsy :rotfl:

Sounds like everyone enjoyed the CRT Breakfast - at least being there even if all the food wasn't top notch.

CRT and BOG two meals in a row - wow! I mean, at least for people who don't always eat in multiple castles in a day :lmao:

That is a bit scary about the pool and what happened. If there is ever a place that being overly-worried makes sense it is around water. Glad everyone was ok in the end

ugh, always hate when people show up right before the fireworks or a parade start and stand ahead of people. I do think most of the time they aren't trying to be jerks - just not thinking - but a little checking if the people behind you can see would go a long way

Congrats on booking your bounceback trip (even if it is sans kids and grandkids) and welcome to the AP club!

Glad you enjoyed 'Ohana's ... we have found that one or two of the meats can be "dry" but that can also vary by skewer so if you really wanted, say the chicken, you could try some from another skewer later in the meal. They certainly do offer up a lot of food there - I agree that they can come by fairly quickly though and the meal can feel a bit rushed.

aw, that is so sweet that DGD5 wished for something for someone else - definitely understand /can identify with your DD being not sure how to explain to her that the wish might not come true

Looks like a fun lunch at H&V. We did breakfast there last trip and thought that we would not return for a while ... and then they go and add Doc and Sofia and now it is probably back in the rotation

We did the animation class last time and the character selection process is another chance for a child meltdown. Our choices to narrowed down to Dopey and Daisy. My DD really wanted to do Daisy and was not pleased when Dopey won out.

Sorry that you haven't gotten any towel animals yet ... maybe you could have put a note on tip envelope that you would like one :confused3

Frozen( (Jan 31)

The weatherman was incorrect and the sun did not come out as previously advertised– another rainy day in paradise. We had plans to get to EPCOT pronto this morning in order for the girls to meet the Frozen sisters and a little rain was not going to stop us!

DD and I had taken DGD5 to see Frozen as part of her birthday celebration and she was quite enamored by the movie and the tale of sisterly love. She was very proud to be a big sister and although squabbles happen, DGD5 is very loving and protective of her little sister and identified with the two sisters from Frozen.

DD had been reading about how long folks were standing in line to meet this dynamic duo and knowing how much DGD5 wanted to meet Elsa and Anna this was top on her list of to do’s.

After getting dressed and with hardly a glance at the food court we headed to the bus station to make our way to Epcot. It was cold and rainy. DH and I had 3 rain ponchos from our previous trip which we had brought along. One of my memories of the 2012 trip is of DGD5 and DH walking through HS in their Disney rain gear. They looked so cute together – hand in hand.

We arrived about ½ hour or so before EPCOT opening and took our place in line. We had not thought to make early breakfast ADR’s which could have gotten us in the park earlier and thus into the Elsa and Anna met and greet earlier so we really and no choice but to stand in the rain and wait along with everyone else. I did find entertainment watching the usual jockeying for position. My favorite was a young couple with a baby carriage who just barreled ahead with not one glance to the right or left and little care for the people that they cut off. I know this is a strategy of some, by not looking or acknowledging anyone else it seems to makes them think that they are justified in their budinski tactics. I was not close enough to extol the virtues of fairness and felt it was best to stay out of their way – that man had a look of fierce determination on his face.

Our plan of action was for DD to rush ahead and get her place in the Frozen queue and we would stop at Sunshine Seasons for breakfast. No doubt just about everyone that has been to EPCOT has had a meal or a snack at this quick service spot. DH and DSIL had the Breakfast Platter which we thought was very reasonable priced for the amount of food that was on the plate, I had a lemon poppy seed muffin and the girls had yogurt. The meal would have been perfect if they had a Dunkin Donuts counter.

All the while we had been communicating with DD who had made a beeline to Norway. She texted us that there was already about 50 people in line ahead of her and she had arrived at the Frozen queue a few minutes after park opening. Those other folks must have had the aforementioned early ADR’s. We texted on and off for a while but then I felt bad that she was standing all alone in the rain and we decided to head up to Norway so we could spell her a bit. Umm – what I mean was that so I could replace her in the line since DH and DSIL did not seriously want to entertain that thought. In fact, DH thought we were foolish to stand in line period not to mention standing in line in the cold and rain.

It seems that he had forgotten the character meeting days when he would do whatever he could to make sure that his young children met the character of their dreams. There were no queues back then and park goers would surround all the Disney Characters at first sight. The new system is much safer for everyone I think. I included an old picture, which does not translate well into print here but it does demonstrate how the poor Disney characters did not stand a chance from the enthusiastic crowds and please note how DH is the only adult within hugging distance of Pooh.

The Frozen character meetings did not occur until 1100 and DD had been there shortly after 0900. We got to Norway a little after 1000 and they had already started lining people up in the alternate site they have when the queue becomes too long. I joined DD in the line while DSIL and DH went to find shelter to keep the girls out of the rain. We made some Disney friends while waiting. The two young girls behind us had just started the Disney College Program and they were very excited and enthusiastic about the program. We enjoyed learning about this program and the steps they had to take to be chosen. DD was sorry that she did not take advantage of this program while a college student and is hopeful that perhaps her girls might be interested. DD did take some time to get out line and out of the rain which was relentless.

Every once in a while DSIL would come and check to see if we were any closer to entering. The line was very slow and folks were saying that Anna and Elsa were taking their time and making the “meet and greets” memorable for each and every child. Wonderful…

I did purchase two small rain ponchos for the girls since their raincoats were not cutting it. We used the third large poncho to try and cover the stroller. Lesson to be learned – if you are heading to Disney you might want to think about purchasing rain protection that is specific for a carriage. We tried to use a rain poncho to cover the double stroller and it was better than nothing, but just barely. I felt bad for my DGD’s and was envious of those folks that had the foresight to bring the correct type of carriage cover. Those children were dry and happy and you could see them through the clear plastic and did not have to peak in every so often to make sure that they were alive and breathing.

DGD1.9 did get tired of all the waiting and decided that it was a good time to nap - just as we were getting toward the front of the line.

DD was hopeful that she would wake up to meet Anna and Elsa and we took her out of the carriage as were almost next in line. No such luck.

Finally, at 1243 (DD has the exact time) it was our turn! DGD5 was so thrilled however, DGD1.9 was still sleeping. DGD5 made sure to bring Anna and Elsa her sister’s autograph book and explained to the Frozen sisters that she was a big sister like Elsa and her little sister was like Anna. DD made sure to include sleeping DGD1.9 in a photo since she was pretty sure she had no plans to stand in that line again and wanted to prove to DGD1.9 that she was really there in and not tucked away somewhere.

DD picked up a few souvenirs related to Frozen but was disappointed in the lack of what was available. The CM mentioned that they could not keep the shelves stocked with Frozen items. Before we left Norway, DD checked her “My Experience App” and learned that Mulan was in the China Pavilion.

This was a great plan since we would be out of the rain and we hurried over to China. DGD1.9 was awake by now so we got into line to meet Mulan. A few people needed to be reminded by Mulan’s handler (is that what they are called?) that they did have to wait their turn. The line was off to the side and not very obvious. Really cannot blame folks who do not deliberately cut in front of other. Children (and some adults) are just so enthusiastic to meet their favorite characters that their emotions run all amuck and they are not aware of their surroundings. We also saw the girls that were in the college program here. They had mentioned that they planned to “try out” for face characters and one of them said that Mulan was her favorite and she would like to try out for that CM role.

Lunch was at the Liberty Inn. Reason being was that there were seats available and it was warm. We were going to be eating at Via Napoli tonight so we were all fine with standard American fare. That dining hall does get loud.

The girls also met Tigger and Pooh as well as Mary Poppins. These meet and greets were around the back in the United Kingdom and there was literally no line. Pooh and Tigger spent a lot of time with the girls, in fact Tigger was reluctant to let DGD1.9 out of his arms, I mean his paws.

For attractions it was “Test Track Baby” as DGD5 calls it, Journey into the Imagination with Figment, The Seas with Nemo and Friends and Turtle Time with Crush. DGD5 was one of the children chosen by Crush to ask a question, she is all about volunteerism. Being a young one she did not understand the rules and rather than asking Crush a question she proceeded to tell him all about her little sister. Crush did the best he could with her question/statement but didn’t quite get it.

Both of the girls also really enjoyed the “What If” labs in the ImageWorks area. They had a blast conducting the orchestra and jumping on the musical “Stepping Tones.”

We had a little time left before our diner ADR’s. During our last trip I had introduced DGD5 to the Kidcot Fun Stops and she had colored a Duffy and was looking forward to doing the same this trip. DD informed me she was NOT going to partake in this activity again this year since actually she handled the brunt of the Duffy coloring on that last trip. No problem I assured her, I had this one.

We found a sheltered alcove in the Italy Plaza that just happened to be where the Duffy coloring usually took place. There was no CM there so I sent DH off on a mission to find two Duffy’s for the girls to color. With a glance in my direction that was not overly loving, he set off on a Duffy hunt. DD reminded me again that this was all mine and she was not going to be coloring Duffy this time around. Soon DH was back and the girls began to color. Through no fault of my own, I realized that I had to visit a restroom but assured my DD that I would be back in no time – she was less than thrilled especially since I did not realize that there was a closer restroom and had gone all the way to the American pavilion. Oh well, she did a good job coloring again this year.

Another lesson learned is that one good dining experience does not necessary equate another equally positive experience. Case in point – Via Napoli on January 31, 2014. We had so been looking forward to this meal since we had a fantastic lunch during the 2012 vacation.

Our waiter appeared rushed and distracted. When we got our appetizer of pizza we did not have enough plates. We had to ask for silverware and it took its time coming our way. Getting a drink refill was a complicated process where we had to usually ask another waiter since our waiter was not often seen. Please understand, we are not difficult folks at all and do appreciate that dining room staff do work hard, but this guy was unreal. We were still working on the pizza when our meals arrived, the pizza was very good I will say. I had gotten Linguini alla Scoglio which is shrimp, clams, mussels, and squid in a marinara sauce. I love Frutti di Mare - why mention this you might wonder? Well, there was a small Italian restaurant, not far from our home, that made the best Frutti di Mare ever and they used a white wine and garlic base that was so good. Since they closed I have not been able to find anyplace else that makes this. I knew that the seafood pasta dish at Via Napoli used a marinara sauce but I did want to try it just to see if it was as good. Well, I tried it and will not be having that again – ‘nuff said.

DH and DD got Piatti alla Parmigiana- Pollo - Chicken Breast, which, simply put is pasta with chicken parmesian. I do not recall what DSIL had. DH was not thrilled with his meal although he was not very specific and I do think that the waiter had a lot to do with his dissatisfaction. The girls shared pasta but had mostly enjoyed the pizza.

We did order dessert however, the waiter forgot since we waited well over 30 minutes before we saw him again and when we mentioned this he looked very sheepish and soon thereafter our desserts arrived. Anyway, it does not matter what we had since we were all set with Via Napoli and ready to head out.

The bills came and he forgot to put it on the dinning plan, so the bills went back. The bills came again and I noticed that he had not charged us for the pizza. We had gotten that large pizza and had told him to put it out our bill since we were treating DD and family. DD looked on her bill and it was not there either. At this point, you would think we would have simply said the heck with it and left, no harm done and for sure Via Napoli could absorb the cost of one pizza? But no, guilt would consume me if I did this so looked for our waiter again – but we could not find him. DH saw the man that walks around and asks you if you are enjoying your meal and mentioned this to him. He took our bill and scurried off and returned a short time later with our now very attentive waiter. Who by the way – never even gave us bread with our meal but then again, maybe he felt we were consuming too many carbs what with that gigantic pizza we had ordered. Anyway, the gentleman who had helped us with the bill was appreciative that we had come forward about the inaccurate bill.

The restaurant was very busy that night and perhaps that affected the food since we had such a great experience before. We were also pretty tired and it had been a wet, cold rainy day. I read on another trip report about folks hitting the “Disney Wall” at some point on their vacation and perhaps that had something to do with us not having such a good experience. As for the waiter, hopefully, he will improve and hopefully we will never encounter him again.

I actually have no memory of our trip back to the resort but I do know that the girls along with their Minnies, Baby Boo and Baby Sully started out the night with me. As the vacation wore on it seemed that they were falling asleep quicker although DGD5 would like to chat for awhile and DGD1.9 would like to sing.

The kids loved it....

.

Don't know why I had such anguish about the lack of towel animals - I mean in the scheme of things, no big deal. I just remembered how excited we would be when we came back to our rooms after a day in the parks and almost always had a new towel animal waiting. I proudly had them all displayed in our window.

So cute about the animals hanging on the fixtures - so much fun to return to your room and find such surprises!

Had no idea that we could have asked about keeping the 3D glasses - good to know.

Tammi, POFQ is a nice little resort and I guess I should stop extolling its virtues since it is getting harder to book for discounts.

Good for you for standing your ground. I think if more folks did this perhaps others would not be so quick to block views or cut in line.

All caught up! Great Trip Report.

Welcome Sheaboys and thanks for following along :wave2:

cute story about them learning to curtsy :rotfl:

When DD saw that they had added Doc and Sofia to H&V it was a no brainer that we would be returning. The food seems to be pretty basic at most of the character meals, however, as folks seem to say - it is not for the food that most tend to partake!

I can see where a meltdown could occur if a child does not get to draw what they have their heart set on. I guess this an early lesson in democracy or you don't always get what you want

We did not think to ask to try the chicken or pork from another skewer - good suggestion and one I will have to remember since we do plan on returning.

I was so, so disappointed when DD decided that she would not return with us...but, one never knows what the future holds :)

Thanks again MaxRebo, I always look forward to your comments :goodvibes

That was so sweet of the older granddaughter to get the autographs for the younger granddaughter. Too bad that she didn't wake up for Elsa and Anna. They looked like they had so much fun with all of the other characters! I'm sorry to hear about your dining experience. It's frustrating when it's been so great the first time around and simply does not live up to our hopes and expectations the next time around. Of course, because of that it always open doors to future dining experiences elsewhere that may prove to be even better!

Your grand kids are adorable! We also had a bad experience at Via Napoli last week. Good was pretty good but the service was awful! And just like you, we aren't difficult to please.

Character Palooza (Feb 1)

We had been reading and hearing about Character Palooza and DD had planned our day today at HS since there were two Fantasmics scheduled and this is when we heard there is a high probability of Character Palooza happening during the winter months.

We headed off to HS in the morning and I knew that I finally would experience Starring Rolls which is where we headed as soon as we entered the park. The size of the cupcakes are impressive. I had my eye on the peanut butter cupcake but thought that it would be a bit much so early in the day, so I decided on an éclair which looked slightly less overwhelming. Figured I could pick up the cupcake later. Giant cinnamon rolls were another big hit.

It was crowded and for us, since we had never been to this café before, it was a bit confusing ordering, but well worth the initial confusion. More seating would be welcomed addition to this spot!

We ran into a character meet right in front of the Sorcerer’s Hat and of course could not let this opportunity get pass.

DSIL rummaged through his backpack to locate the obligatory autograph books and we took our place in line. As we were almost to the front of the line, the gentle drizzle that had been on and off all morning turned into a torrent of pouring rain and just like that, all the character made a run for it. Guess Daisy and Donald are nonconformist type ducks and prefer dry feathers. We took refuge under the Sorcerer’s Hat and decided to wait it out. It wasn’t too long before we ventured back out into the elements and awaited the return Donald, Daisy and friends.

DGD5 has a special affinity for Goofy and he is one of her official Disney boyfriends.

Our day also included the assorted rides and attractions which are meant to awe and amaze children and keep the elders in the group in optimal health. Although, DH did and does enjoy TOT along with DD and DSIL. I sat and Disney watched with the girls while they all endured TOT although DD did confide in me that she thinks DH is getting a bit old for this ride. :confused3

The girls had not met Phineas and Ferb yet and a blank page in the ever present autograph book was calling their names so off we went to meet them and by this time DGD1.9 was blissfully asleep. The line for Phineas and Ferb was minimal and DGD5 had so much fun with these two! They danced with her and even checked out her sleeping sister shushing everyone to be quiet as not to awaken her.

Lunch was at the Studio Catering Company – standard QS fare. What was special was the way the CM at this restaurant went above and beyond to help DGD5 celebrate her perpetual birthday. They all sang ‘Happy Birthday” to her and presented her with a very impressive birthday cupcake.

At the appointed time we headed to the Streets of America for Character Palooza just in time to see Snow White and Mary Poppins walk out of a gated area. Just ahead of them we could see Pocahontas, Meeko, Belle, Gepetto, Genie and Aladdin. A few stray drops of light rain fell and in an instant good ole Snowy and her pal Mary did a quick about face and headed right back where they came from, opportunity lost.

We quickened our pace and headed over to meet Pocahontas and Meeko. We knew we could not waste a precious second of meet and greet time and I was wishing that DSIL had not found those autograph books from the depths of that backpack since I was well aware that the autograph process is a time drain.

My DD reminded me that she had an autograph book when she was little and went to Disney and therefore the tradition must continue. Ok, I get the hint, my fault.

The girls were thrilled to see so many characters and we realized that we would have to come up with a strategy if the girls were to meet the remaining characters before they also headed back in. So DH would step ahead to the next character and stand in line until the girls could replace him in that line and then he would step over to the next line, etc. Understand that lines were not long and no one seemed to mind this system, so it was all good.

One miss was the Genie who quickly strode away when time was called by the head handler person. Next to the Genie was Aladdin who also started to walk away when the girls were next in line but he caught sight of DGD5 ”Happy Birthday” button and although he would not allow a photo he did jot his name in the autograph book telling DGD5 – “he could not refuse the birthday girl.” I muttered under my breathe that a photo is worth a thousand words…those darn autograph books.

The majority of character were heading in and it seemed Character Palooza was done for the day when we caught sight of Queen Grimhilde. She barely tolerated the photo op and this CM really had her role down. The look of disdain on her face as sweet little DGD1.9 took her hand was too funny.

We had dinner at Primetime Café which was excellent as usual – one of my favorite spots to eat. DSIL and I had the Sampler, “a Sampling of Mom’s Favorite Recipes.” This included fried chicken, meatloaf and pot roast with mashed potatoes and some really excellent collard greens. Being from New England, I can attest to what really fine collard greens taste like! DH had the meatloaf and I think DD had the pot roast or maybe fried chicken – not sure but I know she enjoyed her meal also. DD also love, LOVES their milk shakes and we all are fans of the beer battered onion rings. The girls probably had mac and cheese – they usually do. Plenty of food and so good!! Looking forward to returning to this restaurant in the future.

We ended the night by attending the second performance of Fantasmic. We had not been to this performance for many, many years and really enjoyed the show. The special effects were impressive. It was cool out that night and I recall the warmth from the fires as feeling oh so welcome. A great ending to the night!!

Good point about checking out other dining spots. DH wants to give Via Napoli another chance however, not for a while I am thinking!

Your grand kids are adorable! We also had a bad experience at Via Napoli last week. Good was pretty good but the service was awful! And just like you, we aren't difficult to please.

Thank you! :goodvibes

Sorry to hear you also had a bad experience at Via Napoli with the service and I can not help but wonder if you had the same wait staff as we did :scared1:
