Magic bands and an AP voucher

We are DVC members, traveling in September with our family of 4 and my in-laws :yay:. I have received our AP vouchers and the 6 day tickets for my in- laws that I ordered from the Disney site. My question is, on MDE what do I need to do to make these into magic bands for our crew? If I link our AP's, will we use those same magic bands for all other trips also? This is our first experience with magic bands, just want to do things correctly!

Are you staying off site?

The way the MBs work for new APs (I'm not sure of DVCs), is that if your onsite, you get the MB for your stay. If you're off-site, you don't get your MB until AFTER your first stay.

So basically the offsite guests, regardless of your ticket, are the only people now that don't get an MB.

They'll tell you that you can purchase it when you arrive if you like.

Just got back from a trip with my cousin and her husband who are DVC members... I can tell you that they had to line up at Guest Services on the first day to exchange their AP vouchers for physical AP cards and link the AP cards to their magic bands. You'll need your DVC card and photo ID so they can verify your identity and eligibility for the DVC AP discount.

If your in-laws are staying onsite, it is a relatively simple process to link their tickets to the bands on MDE. If they are staying offsite, they can purchase bands in Downtown Disney or at park gift shops for $12.95. If they don't want to purchase bands, they can still just use their RFID ticket cards for park entry and FP+.

But if you're a new AP and don't have MBs from a previous trip, you have to buy them like everyone else and then will be able to customize after your passes are activated, therefore, wont have them until your next trip.

As already stated you have to convert the voucher to an actual AP at a Guest Relations window at any park or DTD prior to your first entrance. The activation date will be when you actually have the voucher converted to the AP. For this reason I would convert it at a park rather than DTD on your first park day. You can link the vouchers to your MDE account so that you can make your FP+ reservations before you arrive. Just be sure to visit Guest Relations to get the actual AP & have it linked to the Magic Band because you can not enter a park with your Magic Band until the conversion is done. Just be sure to keep track of which voucher you assign to which person & link them properly to each person's Magic Band. Same with the tickets for your in-laws. At this time each DVC reservation is being issued separate Magic bands. But that is subject to change. Theoretically you can use the same Magic bands each time you go but I don't know how well that works in practice. You can link your park ticket to any Magic Band assigned to you but I don't know what would happen or if they even can link your room access to an old Magic Band. So for now I just accept the new one for each trip & link my AP to it. You can see your room access & park tickets in MDE & theoretically activate or deactivate at any time.

Thank you all for your help :lovestruc! We are staying at Kidani in a 2 bedroom villa, so we are all onsite guest. So, I can go ahead and assign my in-laws tickets to their bands, pick our magic bands and colors now then add our AP to the bands at Guest Services? Just making sure I get this all straight! Just when I thought I knew exactly how to navigate our vacations, they have to change on me :)!

It can seem quite complicated at times. I know that last year I linked my AP voucher to my MDE account before my trip so I could request FP+ before my arrival. The day after I did that I started reading that people were having issues with the MB's & vouchers and everyone was saying not to link the voucher. It turns out that most of the issues were because people were trying to enter the park using their MB's without having Guest Relations actually activate the AP. I just told them at Guest Relations that I had linked the voucher to the band & they took it from there. Of course be sure you take the actual vouchers with you to Guest Relations. My personal advice is to go directly to the Guest Relations window when you get to the first park you will visit. Don't use the regular ticket windows, look for the ones marked "Guest Relations". In my experience they seem to usually not all be up to speed when you go to a regular ticket window for the DVC discounts linked to the AP vouchers and such.
