i've already customized my family's magic bands for our trip october 25-31; however we are checking in (early) on october 24 with a room only reservation. MDE is showing that i have magic bands for that night as well. ???!!! Do i really need separate bands? How do solve this confusion/dilemma?

You only need to take one set of bands as all bands are linked to your MDE account. There have been posts about recent changes that you can refuse to get another set. Others can chime in as I haven't seen it myself.

They currently send out magicians for every reservation that you have. Remember your mb is also your room key.

I think I recently read that there is an option to decline mbs on mde but I don't know if anyone was ever brave enough to do it and I don't know what the results were.

Every on site stay you do, you have the option to get a free set of magic bands for those with you on the reservation. The bands you receive will already be linked to your MDE and ready to use.

You can use any band linked to your MDE at any time. Most people have different colors and coordinate with what their wearing. There's no difference in your bands you'll receive other than color if you choose a separate color (and nickname of you change it)

Like others have said, you can choose a second color and use them interchangeably or decline a second band. To decline, just go to the customize bands section on MDE and click decline magic bands.

Looks like this...

I believe the option to decline is relatively new. I remember hearing about it as something new and thought it was about time. It seemed like such a waste to force new bands on people who already had them or had purchased one of the special ones in the parks. A waste of money on Disney's part and a waste from an environmental standpoint.

Safe to say batteries last two years in them? I may just request to get them every two years that way I will get a couple trips out of each.

That's what they say. From what I have read here the bands should continue to work for things that need to be scanned close up (near field) like park admission and FP's etc. after the batteries die But once the battery go things like Ride Photos/videos will not link as they require it as they are read from further distances.

Give or take. Battery technology isn't exact so some will last much longer then expected while others will die really early.
