This is my trip report for the Disney Magic Halloween on the High Seas cruise departing Miami with 2 days at sea, and stops in Grand Cayman and Castaway Cay. The cast of characters: Summer (me), Roger (DH), and Emmaline (DD, age 7).

This was our second cruise with DCL. The first being a 3-night on the Dream last June with 3 days at Disney World afterwards.

Friday October 23 - Embarkation Day, Miami, FL

We awoke in Miami after having traveled the previous day from Austin to the Fort Lauderdale airport. We then took a paid shuttle service from FLL to the Intercontinental Miami where we spent the night. We took our time in the morning, eating breakfast at Cafe Bastille downtown (a short walk from the Intercontinental) before packing up and taking a 10 minute taxi to the port. Last time we cruised out of Port Canaveral and I have to say that the experience in Miami was somewhat disorganized and chaotic. Our Port Arrival Time was 11 AM (the earliest possible time for Miami). Our taxi arrived at almost 11 on the dot, we gave our luggage to the porters out front and went into the building. We checked in relatively quickly, being able to head to the repeat cruiser line as opposed to the first timer line. We were in boarding group 3 and we were directed to the waiting area at the back of the terminal. When we arrived there, Captain Mickey was just arriving and there were very few people there so Emmaline was the third in line to meet with him.

That done, we used the bathroom and reviewed our Navigator to see what was going on once we got on board. By 11:30, the terminal was full of people. It was crowded and we were trying to figure out where we were even supposed to go to board the ship. We couldn’t hear a thing and didn’t know where we were supposed to be. By 11:45, they began boarding the ship starting with groups 1 and 2. It was followed about 5 minutes later by group 3 and we were on board just a bit before noon. First stop was Guest Services where we changed our appointment for the Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique. Then we headed across to Port Adventures where we received tickets for the Princess and Anna and Elsa Meet and Greets as well as signed Roger up for the Castaway Cay 5k.

Next stop was lunch at Cabanas where we ate inside because it had been raining for a bit while we were inside the terminal building. It was dry by the time we got on board but the tables and chairs were still wet. After lunch, we headed for the pools. On the way over, we ran into some people from our Facebook meetup group. Their daughter was the same age as Emmaline and the girls instantly hit it off. They mentioned that their dining assignment was wrong. They had asked for late seating, but somehow had main (early) dining. They mentioned they didn’t really care, but I told her that many people are on a wait list for early seating so they decided to switch. I asked if they wanted to maybe try to see if we could change rotations to sit together so we went down to Lumiere’s to see what we could do. Changing the dining was no trouble at all and we were seated all together at a table for 6. Hopefully it helped someone out who really wanted main seating. (We very much prefer late dining.)

Then we hit the pools. The girls played in the pool and went down the “Twist N Spout” slide a whole bunch of times, which was evidently great fun. Before we knew it, our room was ready and we headed down to Deck 6 midship to check out our room and drop off our carry-on items. At 2:30 we attended a meet and greet of people from our Facebook group and made some more friends and then went the Oceaneer Lab to get Emmaline registered for the kids clubs. (We could have done this in the terminal but the line was absurdly long. On the ship there was a short line at the Oceaneer Club, but no line at the Lab so we did it at the Lab).

Back at our stateroom, some of our luggage had begun to arrive and we prepared for the muster drill at 4 PM. We were done with it in about 15-20 minutes and then headed up to deck 10 to watch the sailing away party at 4:30. We watched all the deck party events from Deck 10 and it was much less crowded and easier to see than being down on deck 9.

We thought that at the sailing away party we would actually, you know, sail away. They counted down and the horn played the signature “When You Wish Upon a Star” and...nothing. Eventually we headed back to our stateroom to hang out on the veranda. Eventually, around 5:15 or 5:30, we started heading out to sea. It was fun to watch from the veranda and Emmaline was particularly entranced by the huge pods of jellyfish we saw on the way out. They looked like big purplish pink clumps in the water. I was glad we weren’t swimming in it!

By this time, we had all our luggage and we began to unpack each of them except for the suitcase with our Halloween costumes, which we just slid under the bed with all the empty suitcases. We figured we could deal with that stuff the next day which was when all the Halloween festivities were going to be held. We also met our stateroom host, Adi, who was very nice and helpful throughout the voyage.

At 6:15 we arrived at the Walt Disney Theatre for our first show “All Aboard! Let the Magic Begin.” This show was probably the weakest of all the shows we watched. It was more of an introduction of the shows to come with some original musical numbers as well as a preview of one of the featured variety acts, Lynn Trefzger, a ventriloquist/comedian. I was dubious at first, but she was good and really funny so I was looking forward to her act.

After that, we headed to the atrium for our first Halloween themed event which introduced the pumpkin tree there and we got some stories about Halloween. Before long, it was time for dinner and we headed to our first dining room, Animator’s Palate. We met our serving team: Ivan our server, Emrah our assistant server and Denovan, head server. Ivan (pronounced like the word “even”) was really great and we liked him very much. The show in Animator’s was a lot of fun and I was happy to be reunited with my favorite truffle pasta purses. Emmaline enjoyed her first of many Mickey Bars on the cruise.

After dinner, Emmaline and her new friend went to the Oceaneer Club for the “Royal Ball” where they met up with Cinderella and learned how to dance, curtsey and wave like a princess. Important life skills. Roger and I headed back to the room and unpacked and organized things some more before it was time to pick Emmaline up and go to sleep.

Saturday October 24 - At Sea

I wasn’t sure I was going to like being at Sea but as it happened I really liked it. There were so many things to do on board the ship. It was impossible to do everything we wanted to do. After breakfast at Cabanas we started our day in the pools. I took Emmaline to the pool while Roger headed to deck 4 to check out the running track. After he was done running, he came to the pool and I headed up to try out the Aquadunk, a water slide for those over 48 inches tall (so, not Emmaline). You stand upright in the chute and after a countdown, a trap door opens under your feet and you plunge straight down, go around a curve and end about 10 (adrenaline filled) seconds later. The view from up there was lovely and that’s about all I have to say about that slide.

After that, we showered and changed and went to Cabanas for lunch before heading back to the room to change Emmaline into her Halloween costume for room to room trick or treat at 1 PM. This was not a ship-organized activity, but instead something that I organized on the Facebook meetup group. Roger took her to the staterooms that had signed up while I stayed behind and handed out candy. The trick or treating wrapped up at around 1:30 and then we relaxed in our room for awhile before Roger and I put on our costumes for the Halloween party in the atrium.

The Halloween party in the atrium was INSANE. There were too many people in too small a space. We couldn’t get from candy station to candy station, and forget playing the games that they had set up. Impossible. It was sort of disappointing. Evidently the earlier party was much less crowded. During the party, quite a few people complimented our costumes and we posed for photos with a little boy who was also dressed as Link.

After the insane party, we went back the room and relaxed for a little bit before heading down to the atrium to have photos taken in our Halloween costumes. Then we attended the second show of our cruise, “Twice Charmed,” which was a Cinderella themed show in which Cinderella’s step sisters go back in time and try to prevent Cinderella from ending up with the prince. It was actually a clever show and the production was very well done. Between our show and dinner we participated in pin trading with the officers of the ship before our dinner seating. Emmaline was happy to trade all the pins that she had brought with her that she no longer wanted.

Dinner for the evening was in Carioca’s. Unfortunately, this was my least favorite restaurant, theme-wise and my least favorite food. I don’t even remember what I had - it was that memorable. Roger was similarly un-enthusiastic about his dishes. After dinner, it was time for the Halloween festivities for the grown-ups. We took Emmaline to the kid’s club where she had her own Halloween party there. We headed to Fathoms (the nightclub) for an adult-only act by the ventriloquist/comedian we saw a preview of the night before. It was standing room only, but we still thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was absolutely hilarious. She was great. After that, it was time for the costume contest. All the contestants came to the floor and danced to techno versions of Halloween songs while crew members wandered through the crowd selecting the finalists. If you got a card, you were a finalist. I was handed a card right away. Hooray!

We continued to boogie while other people got cards (or didn’t) and a crew member dressed as Captain America came up to us and told us how amazing our costumes were and he was really hoping we would win. He told us how much he loved Legend of Zelda and how awesome we looked. It was very flattering and I knew that no matter what happened with the contest, our costumes were appreciated by those that knew who we were.

After this, finalists in each category was ushered up on stage. We were in the “Most Original” category along with several other couples: a bride and groom, bellhops from the Tower of Terror ride, and an older couple dressed as servers from Animator’s Palate. The audience cheered for their favorite. Bride and groom turned out to actually BE a bride and groom, having gotten married on the ship earlier in the day. So…not really costumes. They didn’t get many cheers. Tower of Terror couple were up next, they got a lot of cheers. Then us, we got some good cheering, but clearly not as many as Tower of Terror couple. Then it was Animator’s couple and people went wild. I guess it pays to dress in something Disney themed and specifically Disney Cruise themed. So the cute little old couple got the big prize of the genuine gold plastic trophy. They were cute so I wasn’t bitter.

By this time, it was late (like 11 PM late) and Emmaline was still at the club so we picked her up and headed to bed.

I cannot wait to read more about your Halloween adventures. Sounds like you had a marvelous time.

Sunday October 25 - Grand Cayman

I awoke early and couldn’t get back to sleep so I quietly creeped out to the veranda to watch our approach to Grand Cayman. Grand Cayman doesn’t have a cruise dock, but is instead a tendering port, meaning we had to take smaller boats from the Disney Magic out to the island. I ran up to Cabanas to grab a plate of food to take back to the room so we could eat and get ready to meet for our 7:15 excursion. Cabanas wasn’t open. Grrrr. So I grabbed a few pastries from the poolside quick service location that was opened and took those back. We got ready and munched those and then I headed back to Cabanas once open to grab more food we could slam down prior to meeting in D Lounge at 7:15.

At 7:15 on the nose, we were in D Lounge where we had to hurry up and wait for everyone else to show up. Finally, at little after 7:30 everyone had trickled in. I found this annoying. Not only were we not able to eat breakfast, but nothing really happened until 7:30. It seems to me, if you’re going to have an early excursion, the times should be accurate and breakfast should be open in enough time to eat prior to the excursion. Ahem, rant over. We were led to the tender boat where we boarded and made the quick trip to the Island. Our excursion was “Island Tour and Snorkeling with Stingrays.” Our driver took us around the island and told us about it. It’s a beautiful and clean place (much much nicer than Nassau). Our first stop was the Turtle Farm where they breed, raise and then release sea turtles. Emmaline had a great time there holding baby turtles and seeing the big turtles in their tanks with their beach to lay eggs (which are then collected to hatch indoors in a controlled environment). We were there for about 45 minutes which was just perfect. Next we stopped at “Hell” a unique rock formation. I expected it to be bigger. Anyway, we were there for perhaps a bit longer than was really necessary. Back on the bus, we headed for our final destination, Stingray City. We boarded a boat and made our way out into the ocean to the sandbar where wild stingrays gather.

Due to weather and the tides, the water was much deeper than usual and we put Emmaline in a life jacket so that she could float and wouldn’t have to continuously swim since she couldn’t touch the bottom. The stingrays were big and everywhere. We interacted with them and they gave us squid to feed them. It was a really neat experience. Emmaline really loved it and I’m glad we did it. We were there for about an hour and headed back to shore, then the bus back to the tender docks and back to the Magic where we headed to lunch, this time at Lumiere’s for sit down lunch. I had a fantastic meal that day. Definitely my favorite lunch on board and I vowed to eat lunch in the main dining rooms as much as possible from that point on.

After lunch we were exhausted. Between the late Halloween night and the early excursion, we all needed naps. We went back to the stateroom and all had a good nap. After napping, we got up and got Emmaline into her pirate outfit to take her for her appointment at the Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique where she got pirate makeup done as well as some additional pirate accessories. She loved it and came home with some really fun stuff.

After that, Roger took Emmaline to grab some pizza for dinner from Deck 9 near the pool while I started getting ready for dinner at Palo, the adult-only restaurant. We dropped her off at the kid’s club and headed for our 6 PM reservation. Palo is beautiful and we had a wonderful server named Mo. Dinner was good. It wasn’t amazing, but it was good. Dessert was pretty amazing though. The chocolate soufflé is the best dessert I’ve had onboard DCL.

After dinner, Roger and I put on our pirate garb, picked up Emmaline from the club and headed down to the atrium to take photos in our pirate outfits. After photos, it was time for the show, which was the full-length all ages show by Lynn Trefzger. Her show was funny, perhaps not as funny as her adult act, but we still enjoyed it very much.

After the show, we headed up to Deck 10 to check out the pirate party/show going on at Deck 9. I thought overall that this was the only place that the Dream outshone the Magic. The pirate shows on the Dream were much better than the one show the Magic had. After the show were fireworks (which were just as amazing). Emmaline was practically a zombie by this time so we took her back to the room and got her to bed.

Monday October 26 - At Sea

Another day at sea! We had no plans. Well, except for the big list of things I saw on the Navigator that I wanted to do. Otherwise, no plans! :P

We slept in for a bit and then had breakfast in Lumiere's which was just okay. After breakfast we happened to see Sofia the First meeting. When we got in line they told us Sofia was leaving and that we could instead meet with Jake the Neverland Pirate. So we did that and then checked out some of our photos in Shutters before we headed down to the Atrium for a character dance party. Emmaline danced her heart out with the characters, especially dancing with Chip (of Chip and Dale) for quite a long time. She had a lot of fun. After this, we ate lunch, again in Lumiere’s (but it wasn’t as yummy as the day before) and then Emmaline went to the kid’s club for awhile.

Before the cruise, I had made Emmaline a little waist pouch to fit an iPhone in which she put an old iPhone with the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app on it. From there she could send us a text message when she wanted to be picked up, which worked much better than having to deal with the ship provided Wave phones (which are basically really old cell phones with old-school texting). So instead of notifying a youth activities counselor that she was done in the club, she just texted us and we came to get her. The app worked flawlessly for us.

We picked Emmaline up in time to go to the Walt Disney Theatre for the 4D “The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing and Scream.” We enjoyed singing along to the movie in 3D (which wasn’t overdone and was actually a nice enhancement) with additional lighting effects in the theatre (the 4D part). After that, it was time for the Jack and Sally Meet and Greet. We met with them and got pictures taken before racing up to the kids club for the preparation for “Friendship Rocks.” While she was in the theatre, Roger and I headed to the Cove Cafe and relaxed and enjoyed some coffee drinks together.

45 minutes later, we were seating in the Walt Disney Theatre again while the children were led onstage for a short dance number with Mickey and Minnie. There were a lot of kids! The kids all got a t-shirt from the experience and were led back to the club where we picked her up in time to get ready for the evening, which was optional “dress up.” We got dressed and went down to the atrium to have photos taken in our nice clothes. After that, we attended the evening’s show “Walt Disney The Dream Goes On” which was a pretty cute mini-bio of Walt Disney with live musical interludes from early favorites like Pinocchio and Mary Poppins.

After the show, we headed to Fathom’s (the nightclub) for a family comedy and magic show with Rich Purpura. It was enjoyable. Not amazing, but humorous at points and entertaining. After the show, it was time for dinner, this time at Lumiere’s which was my favorite meal of the cruise. After dinner we raced back up to the room to change Emmaline into her pajamas for “Pluto’s Pajama Party” in the kid’s club. She met her friends there and enjoyed the late night party with Pluto while Roger and I prepared to get ready for the next day’s events at Castaway Cay.

Tuesday October 27 - Castaway Cay

Ah bittersweet day. Our last day of the cruise, but also a great day at Castaway Cay, Disney’s beautiful private island. I woke up first and headed out to the veranda as we were making our approach. Like most mornings, I headed up to Cabanas to grab some food to bring back to the room. After I returned, Roger was ready to depart for the Castaway Cay 5k. In the meantime, I sat on the veranda and enjoyed the view, reading my book while I let Emmaline sleep in.

After awhile, I woke her up and got her dressed and sunscreened and ready to go to the island. Roger called and said he was done so we waited for him to come back from the island. While we waited, they began a crew member drill with a life boat and a dummy that they threw into the water to “rescue.”

Roger came back to the room and Emmaline and I headed out to the island to our meeting spot while Roger went to Cabanas to eat. Later we met up on the island at our designated meeting spot. And there we spent a lovely day at Castaway Cay splashing and playing in the sand. At one point Emmaline hung out with the family we had become friends with that we shared a table with at dinner and Roger and I made a quick trek to check out the adult beach. We didn’t stay long. The water was shallow and not very swim-able.

We stayed fairly late in the day (later than we had last year) and we were heading back to the ship as they had begun to clean up the island. When we got back to our room, we ordered room service of cheese and crackers (they call it “All Hands On Deck”), fruit, and hot chocolate chip cookies. While we took turns getting cleaned up, we watched a movie on the stateroom tv and ate our snacks.

Then it was time for the last show of the cruise: “Disney Dreams” which was definitely the best show of the trip. After that, Emmaline went to the kid’s club while Roger and I returned to the room and packed until it was time for dinner. We went to dinner for our last meal with one more back left to pack. After dinner, we went back to the room with about 10 minutes left before we had to have our baggage in the hallway for pickup. We frantically packed while keeping an eye in the hallway for baggage pickup. We just made it. Then we fell into bed and went to sleep since we had to wake up early to disembark in Miami the next morning.

Awesome cruise report! Thanks for taking the time to write it up and for saving/posting the Navigators. Very helpful!! I bet the Halloween theme cruise was great! We also live in Austin & headed on the MerryTime cruise this Thursday!

Took me a while, but glad to have found your report! Sounds like a wonderful time! :)
Your costumes were amazing, but I think I've already told you that. ;)
DH and I might go on a DCL cruise this spring. Pricing things out and looking for some deals, since we didn't really plan ahead.

Hope you had a fantastic time! Did you sail out of Galveston? I have a friend that is looking at a Merrytime cruise for 2017 out of Galveston (assuming that's still offered in a couple years).

Love ya, girl! :) I should have sent you the report directly. I didn't even think about it! You know that DCL is calling your name again. As you know, we're headed to Alaska in August. Can't wait!!

Great trip report. I am going out of Miami also and there are not a lot of posts or reports like that! Who did you take the shuttle from the airport with. That is still a part I need to organize.

We used SAS. I have sort of mixed feelings about it. They were very punctual, the price was right and the driver from the airport to our hotel was great. The driver from the port to the airport was insane, though. He was weaving through traffic and doing about 80 on the highway. There were two unrestrained toddlers in the van and I think my heart rate was about 180 bpm the whole trip. We had a bubble bum (inflatable seat) for my daughter because she's big enough for a booster, but it was still insane. In hindsight, I probably should have provided some feedback. I think it's too little too late at this point.

Tanks for the report! We are doing this itinerary in March. The Halloween stuff sounds like a blast
