We just returned from the Western Caribbean Magic Cruise. Some people have called it, Disney Version of Survivor, The mystery Cruise, and our Version, That's What You Thought! Let's just say, we didn't stick much to the original plan. hope you are ready for this report!!

Saturday we boarded as usual, everything went smoothly at the port and we were able to get on, drop our luggage and go to lunch at Parrot Cay. The weather was really nice, a little cool, but we had no idea what would be coming! We had second seating dinner with the PLA rotation. Our servers were Orlan from the Phillipines and Delphine from France. They were great all week. Dinner was very good. There were six in our party all together, me, husband, two daughters, my mom and her husband. We went to the Welcome Aboard Show featuring Rich Purpura and Dan Riley. We have seen both before, but still very entertaining.

Ok, next stop tomorrow morning, Key West. That's what you thought! The captain announced that weather was going to be very bad in Key West on Sunday, so we would be having a day at sea instead on our way to Cozumel. We would try and pick up Key West on the way back. Evidently there was a strong cold front stretching from New York to South America and they did not think they could get into key West because the channel is very narrow and the winds would be too high.

The next morning we got up for "a day at sea". Many activities planned, Revised navigators were delivered to us. Everything was great until about 3:00 in the afternoon. The winds picked up, it began to rain and the boat started swaying and swaying and swaying. two of us started to not feel well and we did not go to Morty the Magnificent. Well the four who went to the show came back early, saying the show had been cut short. They also started feeling queasy. Only 1 out of our party of 6 made it to dinner. He reported that only a handful of people went to dinner and most of them did not stay until dinner was finished. one server told us he served 30 meals that night, none of which were eaten.

The winds picked up throughout the evening, and the rain and sea water pelted our windows on Deck 1. I didn't realize how lucky we were to be on Deck 1. Four of us were quite sick, one just a little queasy and 1 didn't get seasick at all. The winds were a "whole gale" at 50 knots, and the seas were "very rough" at 13-20 feet. From what I heard, this was one of the worst storms. Most of the passengers were sick and at least half of the crew. Many still tried to do their jobs, but you took one look at them and new they weren't feeling well. Passengers from the upper decks came to the lower decks with their pillows and blankets and laid in the hallways or out by the elevators. Some even had room service delivered to the hallway!

All in all, the winds lasted almost all night and the sea conditions were quite rough as well.

Ok, so the next stop, Monday, became Cozumel. The weather was good in Cozumel, very breezy. However, all excursions that involved water were cancelled. The sea was too rough for tenders to go out, so once again if you had an excursion, That's what you thought! We were also told that we would be going to Grand Cayman on Tuesday instead of Wednesday as planned. Well that's what you thought! Stay tuned for part 2.

Grand Cayman was supposed to be the plan, well not going to happen. Instead they decide we can go to a port 100 miles south of Cozumel called Costa Maya. The Disney ship had never been there before. It is a fairly new port, and a couple of cruise lines go there. They got new Navigators out to us pretty fast and they even lined up some excursions such as beach breaks, bike/kayak adventure, ruins tour, snorkel adventure. We signed up for a beach break. Yeah, That's what we thought!!! We got up in the morning it was very cloudy and quite cool. We went to Promenade Lounge at 8:40 to depart for our excursion and decided at the last minute to cancel. It was just too cold! We decided to go into town, which is right at the pier. It is a little village with stores, a beach, a swimming pool and even an outdoor theater where they put on shows. We already had on our swimming suits and thought we would just go to the beach right there at the pier, yeah, that's what we thought! it began to rain and after waiting it out for alittle while, we went back on the ship. The weather did clear some in the afternoon, but by then we had all taken showers and we just stayed on the ship.

Wednesday became a day at Sea. Fortunately, it was a pretty calm ride back to Key West. Yes, we are going to Key West on Thursday. Guess what, we actually arrived in Key West on Thursday as planned!! It was a little cool and breezy, but really nice for walking around on Key West. We went back to the ship in time for a late lunch and enjoyed the rest of the day on ship. We decided not to try any more excursions, since everything we had planned before was cancelled.

Friday, came Castaway Cay Day. Yeah, we actually made it there! The weather was finally sunny!!! The outside temperature was really nice, but the water was pretty chilly. My husband and daughter went snorkeling anyway and thought it was great. The rest of us got in for a little while, but didn't stay long. We had a great day on the island. Most people stayed on the island as long as possible. It was finally a nice day. They even remarked that at 4:10 there were still 1,500 people who had not yet boarded the ship. You had to be on by 4:30. They said, that this had never happed before. There was a huge line to get back on the ship. No one wanted to give up the sun!!

We sailed for Port Canaveral at 5:00.

This was a very interesting cruise, filled with many surprises. They kept us as informed as they could about the changes and got activites together very quickly. We were amazed at all the behind the scenes work that had to go on to change plans that much and to inform everyone about the changes. Even changing to a Port they had never been to before. We got information about the island, shore excursions, it was amazing the work that was done in a very short amount of time.

We really enjoyed this trip in spite of the many changes and the very bad weather. Disney is amazing! They really go the extra mile for their guests. We had a great week!! More details to follow.

Thx for your detailed report. How was the entertainment on the ship?

Thank you so much posting such a great report. We have been lucky each time we sailed with DCL. Always had decent weather. Sorry the weather did not cooperate, but you sound like you still made the best of it and that Disney did try to help in ways they could.

Did they still have all nightime activities like Deck Parties and theme nights in the clubs like 50, 70, 80's nights...

Glad you had such a great time...hope your next cruise the weather will be wonderful!!! Looking forward to reading about more details of the mystery cruise!!!!

Yes MJ! This board needs a good evening update! Help us out disers!

The entertainment on the ship was still great. They did have the cabaret show with Rich Purpura on Sunday night, but only a handful of people were there. We had the deck party on Tuesday night when we left Costa Maya. The weather for that was great and it was alot of fun.

We really only had rain on Sunday night, the rest of the week was just kinda cloudy and breezy, but most everything else was able to take place, just not on the night that was originally scheduled.

Most people seemed to have a great time in spite of the unusual weather. Disney certainly tried to do whatever they could to make it a great experience. I know alot of scrambling went on to arrange activities and ports of call.

The one thing that was different about this cruise, was that we had to get up on Thursday morning in Key West and report for immigration. That was not a fun experience. Everyone had to be in the Walt Disney Theater at 6:45 a.m. Since the schedule was changed, we had gone from Costa Maya to Key West, we had to report to immigration like they do on the Eastern Cruise. The process went pretty smoothly, but no one was happy about being up that early in the morning.

A couple of other things that were different - Key West, we had to leave at 5:15 instead of the usual 10:15 since we had to sail to Castaway Cay. Also, in Cozumel you usually get to stay in port until 11:00, but we left early again at 5:15. I'm not sure why, since Costa Maya was only 100 miles south. We stayed late in Costa Maya but the little village closed earlier than that, so there wasn't much to do except stay on the ship.

Like I said before, we were very impressed with how Disney handled all the unfortunate situations. We had a great cruise in spite of the weather and ports of call.

Someone won a free cruise at the Who Wants to Be a Mouseketeer Show. That was the first time I saw someone win. Of course they were very excited.

Be glad to answer any questions you may have about the Magic or ports of call, at least the ones we got to.

Thank you so much for sharing. That Sunday night sounds awful! Can't imagine it being so bad that people would sleep on the floor! Glad to hear that the rest of the week went better (although a still a little crazy). Nice to see that you got to enjoy Castaway Cay.

Are you going to book another one to get the cruise you planned? :)

Thx for all the updates! It helps us landlubbers! Sounds like a great adventure....my favorite kind of trip!

We will probably go on another cruise in November. My mom and I have gone two previous times. I think we will try the eastern again. We have been on the eastern once and the western twice. Hopefully we won't have the wild ride we had this time. It was an adventure, but don't think I would like to do it again. being seasick was not fun. We have never been sick on previous cruises, but I think this one got just about everyone. Even one of the officers said he was quite queasy on Sunday night.

We went to the Q & A with the officers and someone asked the question "How many captains are on the ship?" The captain answered, "On this cruise there are 3, Captain Mickey, Captain Tom (himself) and Captain Hook. Captain Hook was the one driving the ship on Sunday night."

We also went to the Q & A with the performers of the shows. They said that it was really hard to do Morty the Magnificant that night due to all the swaying. The water trick could not happen, the water kept sloshing out of the tank. I don't think the performers were feeling too well either. They did a repeat show the next night for those who missed it. Like I said, Disney really tried their best to accomodate for the bad weather. Also for the deck party, they even gave away free punch, alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

:( You did a great job of describing the trip. This was the first and last cruise for our family of 6!We agree Disney did all that they could to make the best of the lousey weather but a cruise has too many variables for us.We all agreed that we will stick to what we know best, Disneyworld. If the weather's bad there, you can always leave early unlike the ship!Best of luck to all !

Thanks for posting your trip for us. Loved the Q & A about the Captains. I always think of two, but I've forgotten about Cpt. Hook, but he's an evil one, so he doesn't count. Maybe that's why I forget him.

We enjoyed our cruise. We were happy to meet our disfriends.

The March 29 Mystery Cruise was my first experience cruising. I've been reading the boards for a long time and thought I'd make my observations my first post.

My family included myself, DH, DS 10, DD 7 and my mom. Our embarking on Saturday went very smoothly. We were surprised to see an old teacher of my son's in line so we spent the time while we waited in line talking to her. We ran into her several more times on the ship. After eating at Parrot Cay, an excellent lunch buffet, we stopped by our rooms. We opted to get 2 Category 9's. I thought the extra room far outweighed having a veranda. The rooms, while not connecting, worked out great. The split bath is very helpful when everyone is trying to get ready at once. Our DD stayed in grandma's room while DS decided to stay in ours. We had plenty of room. We were able to get into our rooms right away to drop off our stuff before going to explore the ship. My mom and I tried to use the hot tubs, they had them closed. I don't know if this is normal before they leave port, but sunning outside was almost as nice. Little did I know we wouldn't see the sun again soon! The deck party was very nice. They had announced that there was to be a rocket launch between 5:00 and 5:15 so we stayed around to watch for it. Unfortunately, they decided to cancel the launch that day. Our bags all arrived well before our early dinner seating. I had packed dinner clothes in my carry on bag, just in case (thanks to the boards I've been reading). Dinner was at Parrot Cay where we met our 2 dinner companions, a mom and 7 year old daughter from Illinois too. It seems like half the cruisers were from the Chicago area. Our servers were Izo and Roberto. They were fantastic! That night we were told that we would not be stopping at Key West on Sunday. While we were disappointed, we figured Disney knew best. We attended the Welcome Aboard Show which we all enjoyed.

Sunday at sea - I'm sure everyone knows by now about the storm that hit. We had the early seating and only about half the people showed up and more left during dinner. DS and DH both left before dessert. Luckily DD never complained about feeling sick at all. Mom and I were feeling a little queasy, but managed to make it through dessert, the Grand Marnier Souffle. It was well worth staying around for. We opted to go back to the rooms after dinner and stay there. We saw many people getting sick in the halls and didn't want to stay around. By morning, we were all back to normal.

Monday at Cozumel - we hadn't planned any excursions at Cozumel. We walked around the "main" street and the mall near the port. It was cool, but comfortable for walking. I wasn't very impressed. I found it very commercial and didn't appreciate the fact that the shop owners made up prices as they went along. My son priced a necklace and the second time he went back they quoted him $15 more than the first time. No thanks! Monday we were told we wouldn't be stopping at Grand Caymans. I was disappointed, we were scheduled to snorkle with the Stingrays. Oh well, Costa Maya here we come.

Tuesday at Costa Maya - Considering the Disney ships have never gone there before, I was very impressed they were able to organize this so quickly. It was a short shuttle ride to the open market. Outside the entrance there was a sign "Welcome to Costa Maya". I thought this was a perfect picture opportunity and sent DS over to pose by the 2 statues on top. To his surprise, 1 of the statues started to move. I think DS's heart is still racing. There was a very nice open market and they put on several dance shows in a stage area they had off to the side. My daughter had her hair braided. The kids wanted to go back to the boat for lunch and go to the clubs. After we dropped them off, we went back to town and walked along a path that went along the water front. We had a very nice walk and got some really nice pictures of the waves hitting the shores. We all enjoyed this much more than Cozumel.

Wednesday at sea - The kids did a lot in the clubs and mom and I went to see Chicago in the theatre. DH, mom and myself also played bingo. We didn't even come close to winning anything.

Thursday at Key West - we took the train tour. We were able to get right on the train directly off the boat. I was a little disappointed in the length of the tour. It was scheduled for 1-1/2 hours and we were done in 50 minutes. After the tour we walked around Mallory Square. Of course, we had to stop and try to rum cakes. Thursday was lobster and steak on the dinner menu. I can still remember being able to cut into the steak with my butter knife. It was delicious! Did anyone else notice that the boat slowed down to let a "rescue boat" drop someone back on the boat? We saw this little boat through our porthole and next thing we knew, we were slowing up and the little boat came up right next to the back of the boat. It looked like there was a teenager or young adult trying to get back on. Thursday was also the day we had to report to immigration. It went fairly smoothly. After we were done we went to eat at Topsiders and a woman in the elevator asked if the line was long for immigration. She was planning on going to "rouse the family" after she had her coffee. It was almost an hour after they had asked us to report. The nerve of some people who don't think the rules apply to them.

Friday at Castaway Cay - Friday more than made up for the cloudy and cool weather the rest of the week. It was perfect. I think everyone from the boat got off. I went snorkling with DS and we had a blast. The water did get very stirred up. I wish I had gone out farther sooner. We did see a stingray. I had an underwater camera and kept snapping away at all the fish and sunken treasures.

Well, would we do it again? We asked the kids and received a resounding YES! but can we go to Disneyworld too? We booked on the Wonder for 4 days next year so we can do both.

Sorry so long.

Nice report, thx for sharing!!

nu cruzer,
The "rescue boat" is the Harbor Master. A Harbor Master comes aboard at every port. It is our understanding that he assists the crew in docking and undocking. When coming into port, the small boat brings the Harbor Master to our ship, he climbs a net type ladder to board our ship. When we are leaving port he walks up the gangway and enters our ship. After we are out of the port the small boat comes aside and the Harbor Master exits the Magic and climbs down the net ladder and gets back aboard the smaller boat. We have pictures if you would like to see them.

Hi. We were also on the 3/29 cruise and had a GREAT time! Yes, the weather was not the greatest, but as long as it wasn't freezing and pouring, we didn't care! Our group of 11 people ranged in ages from 2 through 72. Only one 2 year old was sick on Sunday night and my 2 kids (ages 5 and 2) seemed to not notice the rocking of the ship! They ate dinner, watched a movie and went to bed like every other night. The adults all took a Dramamine and tried to sleep through it!

As for the ship itself - wonderful. The dining rotation is a wonderful thing. Our wait-staff, David and Joyce, had a great time with the kids and with us. Due to the miserable weather on Sunday night (and since most of the people didn't stay at dinner for very long), the ship re-ran the color show in Animators Palate for us, which was fantastic. We didn't participate in any of the kid's programs, so I can't say how that worked out. I can say that there were very few groups of un-ruly kids on the ship. I was a little worried that the kids programs would be all over the place, but the only time I ever saw them was at the lunch buffet.

I found the stateroom to be a little tight. We had a category 5 for 4 people. It wasn't really small, but when we were all trying to get dressed it seemed that everyone was in my way! Also, we had trouble with our luggage - there wasn't any place to put large pieces of luggage! And as any parent knows, the kids are ALWAYS where you need to be, so that made it a little rough!!!

We had such a great time, despite the weather, that we're already planning the next cruise on the Magic! Maybe next time we'll get to Grand Caymen!!

Next time you cruise, store your luggage under the bed, just lift the mattress and it is all out of the way.
