One of the rumors coming out of this FP re-shuffling at Epcot is that the reason Maelstorm has been moved to Tier 2 is because a lengthy rehab is on the way. Is this true and if so, will this rehab involve Frozen characters (please, for the love of all things Disney, I hope not!!!)?

That is an interesting theory. I was wondering why they would move that to Tier 2 and put Living with the Land as a Tier 1.

Sounds like a good theory. I don't mind the Frozen layout idea, but that's just me. It's been a long time since Epcot followed its original purpose and concept, anyway. And at this point, I'm here for new rides.

I can definitely understand why other people wouldn't like the idea though.

Right now large rumors have been going around that disney is readying maelstrom to go down for 12-18 months starting in January 2015 to get a full blown frozen makeover. Several sources are saying this, of course no confirmation from disney but it's not unlikely. I don't think this is the only reason maelstrom moved from tier one tho.

Well there must be some kind of a rehab coming up because it's not bookable as a FP after Aug. 15th.

Rumors are Thats the time frame as to when it will go down and will take maybe a year to finish before coming back.

Isn't the booking window only 60 days from today anyway, which would be about Aug 15th?

My booking window began today (day 60) because I have tickets and I'm staying at a Disney resort until Aug. 28th. I was able to make fp's for everything up until The 28th except Maelstrom.

Gotcha. Still hope they hold off on rehab for a while. AND NO FROZEN!!! :)

Honestly, I wouldn't think that one would have anything to do with the other. They look at Tier 1 versus Tier 2 based on how FPs are being used.

Most likely reason:
-they found that no-one was signing up for Maelstrom FPs, but because it is a slightly more popular ride than most at Epcot the waits were getting long with no-one having FP. So by moving it to Tier 2, they are hoping to shift more FP+ there.

The problem Epcot has is the only true "Tier 1" rides are Soarin' and Test Track, with Illuminations probably ranking a distant third. Anything outside of those are a waste of Tier 1. However, they are probably hesitant to only have three choices in the "Tier 1" level, and are just moving things around to try and find the right balance. In the end, though, this would be the proper use for the tiers at Epcot.

Back to the topic at hand, the change is certainly not a sign of a refurb coming. If anything, I would think they would LEAVE it a tier 1, as coming out of the refurb it would give a popularity boost.

I don't know everything I'm hearing from a few different sources is maelstrom is going down maybe as soon as September.

I'm not saying it's not going down for a refurb. I'm saying that moving it to tier 2 is not tied to the change. IF they were setting a tier based on what the ride was going to be, then they would've left it as a tier 1, because if they are refurbing it as a Frozen themed ride, it will be the most popular ride in all of WDW when it reopens, and they'll just have to move it back to tier 1 again.

I agree with what you said before I think they are trying to find the right place for these rides because test track and soarin really are the only tier one rides.

Until maelstrom becomes Anna & Elsa's frozen adventure (or whatever they decide to call it)

Has the situation changed in the past couple of days?

Has anyone been able to get a Maelstrom FP+ for Aug 17 and beyond? (My FP+ signup is coming up and am trying to finalize my list...)

Thanks!
