maelstrom gutted

Can't really tell much about those two pics. Whether it turns out to be an overlay, a repurposing, reusing of the existing ride track or a total ground up construct. Those two pics don't show anything really. Personally I hope it's truly a new build.

The twitter account says that the photos are from the entry way. I think we all knew that the queue area was going to be completely redone to maximize space. These photos don't really tell us anything about the ride.

Agreed.

I think the photos show a complete gutting of Maelstrom. While I am not happy with losing maelstrom, it does show promise to be a major new attraction, not just a overlay.

Time will time!

Good…I'm glad it's getting gutted. I was never a fan of Maelstrom anyway. We only went on because there was never a line. But I remember feeling trapped into watching that awful movie at the end. Good riddance!
Haha, I had never watched the movie until I took my final ride on Maelstrom in Sept. My 5yo DD insisted on staying for the movie, and she actually sat quietly and watched the whole thing! Maybe because it was after 8pm at that point and she'd been up since 6am and was getting tired. But still. ;)

My neighbor's cat-sitter's brother's best friend's uncle's tailor is married to a woman who gets her hair done by the man who has a daughter whose best friend is college roommates with a girl who is in the college program and dating a higher up and she told me that they are definitely adding in Led Zeppelin's Immigration Song to the ride. It will play as you climb the hill that used to have Oden at the top of it. True story.

I agree with the people who said we can't really tell anything from these photos. The line did desperately need to be redone. The ride also needed some updating. I don't think a complete overhaul was really the way to go, but no one asked my opinion and the cast member working guest relations didn't care to hear my opinion that I was offering up when I was there earlier this year, anyway. I'm hoping for the best but preparing for a ride that I will only go on when my daughter is asking to ride it.

Hmm. I'd be lowering my expectations just a bit.

Rode the old ride. Nothing great. Maybe the Frozen theme will jazz it up.

This is one of the few improvements I'm not thrilled about.

Frozen is not at all relevant to Norway, other than the geography being loosely modeled after that of Norway. They could have done so much more w this, and not taken away an otherwise enjoyable attraction.

I would have put Frozen in place of Ellen's Energy, and built that pavilion up into a crystal palace. Then you've got the water zone to the right, and ice to the left as you enter the park. Balanced! Nice! Each theme based on it's own mega-popular movie.

It'd be ditching a junk ride instead of a moderately popular one, and giving Frozen it's own defining corner of the park instead of killing off Norway.

Then you make Frozen, Soarin and TT tier-1, and move Maelstrom to Tier-2 which would alleviate the feelings of Tier-2 being worthless.

All I can think... is that Maelstrom got too costly relative to the # of ppl riding it, and probly Akershus seeing insufficient bookings, thus reskinning that w Elsa will boost it's mega-pricey buffet.

Putting Frozen in FW doesn't make any sense either. DHS or MK would have been the best place foe a Frozen ride.

I can't imagine that Maelstrom is that expensive to keep up and I've never gotten the impression that Akershus has problems staying booked.

Although if they can make the frozen ride hold as many people as Ellen's Energy Adventure does.....:rolleyes1

Frozen (and The Incredibles, and Wall-E, and Cars, and Wreck-It Ralph, and Monsters, Inc., and every other blockbuster in the last 15 years) belongs in DHS which is barren and crying out for major treatment of modern animation.

I could see Frozen working in Future World, but not a ride akin to Snow White Scary Adventures, Peter Pan's Flight, Journey of the Little Mermaid, Winnie the Pooh, etc. which I think, from what I have read, is what this ride is going to be like. I feel like what they had going on in the Stave church where they showed the photos of Norway and how they inspired certain scenes in Frozen was a great way to incorporate the ride into the pavilion. A ride 100% based on the movie doesn't fit for me. I agree it fits much better in Fantasyland. Now, all that said, if they Changed Ellen's Energy Adventure and the surrounding pavilion a lot, I can really see Frozen getting incorporated really well. It can be a pavilion about weather and climate and how those things affect different energy sources around the world. For example, they can talk about the wind power that is harvested and how certain areas get to little wind and others too strong of wind to harvest the power. They can talk about solar power and how much surface area is needed and how much sunlight required to harvest a certain amount of energy. They can talk about nuclear power, natural gas, petroleum, and all sorts of things. They can have an interactive area where you design your own roller coaster and choose which energy source you want to use to power it. Then, you determine how much of that energy source you would need. Then, like on Sum of All Thrills, you get to ride your coaster. If you don't use enough power, it can stop in the middle of the ride. If you use too much power, you go shooting off the track (and let's face it - lots of kids would intentionally do this). You can ride a stationary bike and try to generate enough power to turn on a light bulb. Regarding Frozen, Elsa can be our host as we journey on the ride and learn about how important both winter and summer are and how the earth needs both to sustain life and how warm and cold climates are both able to give us different power sources and how they each require different kinds and amounts of energy. I hope that makes sense.

I'm always one for change, as long as they do it right. Hopefully the new ride will be awesome.
