As I promised on another thread, here is my experience at the Madonna Concert:
Monday, June 14th, MCI Center, Washington DC
DH, age 41
Me, age 40
DD, age 12 (almost 13)
DS, age 9
We got there about 1 hour before the show time just to "people watch." The crowd demographic was quite interesting to say the least. I would say the two biggest majority of fans were around my age, with the next group looking to be in their 20s. There were quite a few people that appeared to be in the "over 50" group and, believe it or not, I saw more than one "gray haired grandmother" type. Very unusual mix.
Madonna started her show about 40 minutes late and there was no opening act. After years of concert going, I had come to expect late starts. In fact, I'm not sure if I've been to one concert that ever started on time. The row of 20-somethings behind me were mightily pissed off that the show was late. They kept looking at their tickets and saying "It says right here that she is supposed to start at 8:00 p.m." and then went happily back to their discussion of hair braiding and tanning to get the "island" look throughout the hour.
The beginning of the show started out kind of dark and ominous. There are a few screens that show images throughout the show. Most of them strange. It reminded me of the same kind of filming as the movie "The Ring". I cannot remember the exact song list, but many of the songs seemed to be from the "American Life" CD. This was not pleasing to me as this is the ONE CD that I did not buy or am familiar with. So, there were a number of songs I just didn't know. She did sing: Crazy For You, Get Into the Groove, Material Girl, Don't Tell Me, Music, Holiday, Papa Don't Preach, Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Frozen, Die Another Day, Deeper and Deeper, Burnin' Up (I think off the Borderline CD), and many others that I'm forgetting. I was hoping for Ray of Light and Beautiful Stranger but didn't get it. She also did a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" that was very good. The other thing she did was do at least 5 songs playing the guitar and just sitting there and singing.
Her dance numbers were fantastic. I especially liked the Scottish Dancers and the guy with the Bagpipes. Very good. During her costume changes, some of the dancers came out and did a few routines and they were excellent. At one point I felt like I was at Cirque De Soleil! Her voice has gotten much better over the years and she sounded great. She was not lip synching. For a 42-43 year old, her fitness level and body is amazing. I felt pretty bad about myself when I left!
And that was basically it. Show started at 8:40 and ended at 10:30. That was probably the only real flaw in the show--it ended very abruptly and the lights came on. No encore, no real "goodbye", it was just over. I'd be interested to hear how her other shows are. I understand she is trying to "cook" something up with Britney Spears for her New York shows this week.
