Two years ago, on our last Disney trip, I noticed people wearing fashionable glowing accessories that changed color along with the nighttime shows (specifically Fantastmic and Wishes). I've noticed that Disney has since introduced many more interactive items (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/entertainment/made-with-magic/).

How do these things work? Is there a chip inside that syncs to something based on proximity? How far/close do you have to be in order for the ears or whatever to work? Obviously the entire Fantasmic stadium probably lights up the ears/wands, etc., but what about Wishes? How close/far can you be from the castle in order for them to work? If you bought an interactive item two years ago, does it still work now? Curious about the utility life of the item. That being said, does it use just normal batteries?

Yes there is somethign inside them that lets them be synced with shows and parades. I think just about every night event they do something in sync with the show. There is also the wand where you can control what they are doing (when it's not show time) and you can control anyone so it's fun to watch kids run around changing everyones lights to what they want

The contain RFID sensors just like MagicBands.

There are signals all throughout the Hub that will sync the ears with the show - you don't have to be near the castle for it to work.

I don't know which ones they use specifically at night, but most every lamppost in MK has RFID sensors that are used for the parade, and I would assume they use at least all the ones in the hub/on main street.
