I have my first appointment with a personal trainer at my health club on Sunday, March 6. I have no idea what to expect.

Has anyone else used a personal trainer? How often do you see them - I'm thinking once a month?

I've been training (on and off) for the Ocean City Maryland half marathon coming up in 7 weeks. However I'm not losing weight and I'd like to incorporate some weight training into my workout schedule. I'm hoping this trainer can help me work out a weekly workout schedule for training walks and weight training that won't keep me in the gym for hours.

Any personal trainer experiences out there? Did you find it helpful? Did you find it motivating?

Hi Doreen. Can't answer your questions, but just wanted to say good luck! I'm sure you'll get lots of valuable info.

Hi Doreen

I see a personal trainer for a half hour each week. She worked out a weight and strengthening routine with the help of my physical therapist that coordinates with my PT for a torn rotator cuff. The schedule only takes 1/2 hour currently. It can take longer if you add more reps or have to wait for the machines .. Try to get a complete body workout to start.

Good luck:flower:

Hi Doreen,

I've used personal trainers a few times in the past. A good one will usually discuss your fitness goals, make some body measurements, and show you how to use the machines and or free weights to get a full body workout. They should also help you determine the best amount of weight to start with on each exercise. Be sure to discuss any physical injuries you have so the trainer can work around them.

If you feel that you need someone watching over you at every step in order to stick with your workout, you can schedule the trainer for as often as you want/need/are willing to pay for. If you really just want to know how to use the machines and what weights to start with, then one appointment with periodic check-ups later as you get bored with the routine (maybe every 4 months?) will probably be fine. Since you're already used to routine exercise, then one or two appointments will probably get you set up just fine.

Both personal trainers I've worked with in the past gave me a list with each machine/exercise listed, each weight amt. for that exercise, how many reps, and how many sets. There was space for me to record each time I worked out and I was able to see real progress as my weights and/or reps increased. Also, I was able to use the list to make sure I did each exercise and didn't forget any.

I hope this makes you feel more prepared!

I'm trainer addicted and work with my trainer 3 times a week for 1 hour per. I've been doing this since July, 2003. I know I would never stick to a routine without the discipline of those appointments. Plus I just enjoy my workouts more with some company. It's not that expensive at my gym because I am a charter member and I buy 30 sessions at a time. Still I do have to sacrifice to afford it.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm feeling a bit better now, thanks to all of you. :grouphug:
