Mad at Pottery Barn..Kind of my fault, but STILL

I would check out PB's website for a CS phone number. They should stand behind thie merchandise 100% . I would think they should offer you another quilt that is equal to the value you paid on the orginal. Explain to them what you would like when you call and be clear and concise (don't beat around the bush!).

Since I don't shop at PB I'm not familiar with their quilts. Is it PB brand or another brand? If another brand then it is not really PB's problem, and you would need to contact the manufacturer.

I don't think you're at fault at ALL. I have had many times in which clothing fell apart later and I returned it to the store without issue - with or without a receipt. It's called standing behind your merchandise. Heck, I have pants that the hem fell out of and I took it back to Ann Taylor Loft and they repaired it for me! Without the receipt - didn't matter to them, the tag says ATL, they know it's theirs and stand behind their merchandise.

You followed the instructions, the quilt bled, it's their merchandise quality issue.

Fight it - they should stand behind it. Esp such a high dollar store!

About 5-6 months ago I went and bought my son a quilt at pottery barn and all the accessories that matched. I spent around $600

Well, since I fold his quilt down when he goes to bed, I had not washed it until last week.

Well, I washed it in the washer on cold, and the colors bled all over the place.

Dumb me, I did not have the receipt and I tried to return it.

Well, the quilt rang up at $15 ( I spent around $160 plus 9% tax)

Now, he has all this cute (and overpriced) stuff with no quilt to match, and they won't even exchange the ruined quilt for a different one.

I can understand not giving me my cash back, but they should at least exchange...the mark up on their stuff is high enough. Seems like good CS.

AND, it stinks that the quality was so bad for the price! And they won't stand behind it at all.

MUST REMEMBER TO SAVE RECEIPTS

Do they still have the same quilt in stock? Just rebuy it at the $15 price, and return the defective one. That way, you won't be out any money.

If you cant find the same quilt, what about buying one in a solid color that matches the sheets and room?

If you look at the tag, you will find the name of the manufacturer. Google them and see if they can help you. Just give them the item number and a description (also found on the tag)

Good Luck!!

I think they are offering her $15 because that was the last markdown price on the quilt as they no longer have it in stock, but when they put the UPC into the computer $15 is what comes up?!?!

Good News....Just became a moot point...I got the majority of it out through soaking and only the bottom that would be tucked in anyway shows! Yay!!!

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm so glad that worked for you!! I was about to suggest rewashing the quilt with a wonderful product I use...Shout Color Catcher. They are like dryer sheets that you throw into your washing machine before you wash the clothes. Any "loose" dyes that get into the water get absorbed by the sheets instead of the items. Sometimes when I have forgotten to put one in, and something has been "bled" on, I rewash that item with a sheet or two thrown into the wash, and you would be surprised how often all the dye comes back out...it is amazing!!!

I'm glad it worked!!

I know it is too late now, but here is an old Amish quilters tip. If you have anything that you think might bleed, do the first wash with a cup of salt and no soap. Let it soak for a while, it will set the colors. Then you can rewash with soap.

Now that you mention it, the other thing you can do to set dye is soak it in cold water and vinegar (like when you're dyeing easter eggs). But thankfully you won't need to do that.

However, I'd still contact the Merchant. There's no reason for shoddy quality.

I worked in retail for many years and most stores want to provide good customer service.

I would call and ask for the District Managers number or the corporate office number. Ask the store manager to give you the number because then he/she might realize you are serious and try harder to help you.

If not, get the number and explain just as you did here. Be very nice and calm. Simply explain that you bought it awhile ago, just got around to washing it, followed the instructions to the letter and this is the result.

Explain that you love their items and your son loved the quilt and that is why you didn't keep the reciept, because you knew you would NOT be returning it. However you didn't consider that the quilt would fall apart/mess up the way it did upon washing. And now you want to know what they can do to make it right. Explain that you are not trying to get your money back. That you just want an exchange for the same or similiar item.

I cannot imagine them not giving you something. Especially if you are nice and diplomatic about it. As I said being in retail and customer service for so long, that is what we would have done at any of the stores I worked at.

Try it. Good luck. Let us know if anything changes.

What a great post! Thanks

To the OP: I'm glad it washed out!

I work for PBK and can tell you, we stand behind the merchandise.

First of all, we will take items back with receipts for 1 year, not many retailers do that.

Second, I have worked for 2 years there and have never seen a quilt go down to $15, ever.

Was this from an outlet store? I don't know the policies for an outlet but at our store, we have exchanged old for new styles if the product was defective.

If you have the credit card bill that shows the date of purchase, take it in the store and they can then look up your receipt. But, it has to be at the exact store of purchase.

I have worked retail for a long time and PBK has the most liberal policy I have ever encountered. Every store will have defective merchandise, that is something that can't be avoided. But, they are very good at working things out.

That's a pretty nice policy! Though I used to work at Kohl's and they don't have a time limit on returns. If you have a receipt and bring it back 3 years from now, they give you the price back on the receipt.

Since you used to work at Kohl's you'll like this story...once I was returning something at Kohl's and a lady came in returning a whole bunch of things and she had a stack of assorted recepts going back a couple years that she handed the lady in returns. She expected the employee to go through all the receipts to figure out which receipts went the various items and was miffed when she was told that she had to go through them. I did hold back my chuckles. ;) The nerve of some people!

I probably did. It happened a while ago. She was such a nightmare of a customer and I'm sure a big reason why many people can't work in retail! :rotfl2: I was so glad that the employee put her in her place and I went back and told them later when I saw that the customer wasn't there anymore. :)

Wow - didn't know about Shout Color Catcher - I'm definitely going to try that.

Glad to hear that the OP was able to get the quilt restored to most of it's original condition. I was going to suggest searching ebay for the quilt if she wanted to replace it.
