We're going to Universal for the first time right before Christmas. Very much want to see the Macy's Parade. Is it like Disney's Christmas parade in that folks stake out spots more than an hour in advance or is it more spontaneous? Is there somewhere to be to be sure and see the tree lighting? (I have no idea where that tree is)Thanks!

People line up for the parade, but I don't feel that it's as bad as Disney.

The tree is over by the Revenge of the Mummy ride, so you'd want to be by that if you want to see the tree lighting.

Attended the parade two years ago and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It has a pretty long route so finding a good viewing spot should not be a problem, but it is best to be near the tree (around "Macy's" in the New York area) for the best experience.

Be forewarned: the parade song, played over and over the park sound system, stuck in my head for a couple of days. Not sure if they use the same one every year but it sure was catchy!

I agree...lining up for a parade at the Studios is no where near as bad as Disney. Plus as you stated, the route is pretty long and covers much of the front part of the park. The Mardi Gras parade is the same way...you could line up as late as about 15 minutes before the parade begins and still take wonderful pictures.
