MACuser wants to utilize Caskbill's Program

Any help out there on how to convert the program to MAC speak?

Only way is to run Windows on your Mac, using either Apple's BootCamp or a third party solution. Caskbill has passed away and, to my knowledge, his wonderful program is neither being updated nor prepared for conversion to the Mac. There is a Mac program out there whose name I don't recall. Can someone else post a link to it here?

You'll just need to add a PC partition to your MAC and Caskbill's program should work within that partition.

Enjoy! It's a great program. Kudos to Peg and her team who found a way to upgrade Bill's most excellent program.

Doc -when i patitioned my HD with bootcamp it still needed a Windows OS to run that partition. Tha;s the part i was trying to get around. any suggestions?

There's really no way around it. You need Windows to run a Windows application.

If you don't want to set up dual booting just for this one program, you can try a virtualization solution like Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion, but you're still going to need to buy Windows.

Yes, you will need a valid windows license. If this is the only thing you need it for, it is probably not worth it. I find that there are a few (a very few) things I do that I *need* IE for, though, and so I tend to boot mine up from time to time.

I use VMWare Fusion rather than boot camp, so that I don't have to reboot each time.

Yes, Microsoft Windows (the operating system) has to be present on the computer in order to run a Windows program. All Parallels and VMware let you do is run Windows at the same time the MacOS is running, so you don't have to reboot to go back and forth.

So, if you want to run Caskbill's program on a Mac, you'll need to go out and purchase Windows 7 or Vista (if they still sell that). If you're OK with rebooting to use Windows, then you don't need to buy anything else. Just install Windows on your Boot Camp partition, and you're all set. If you want to run Windows while your MacOS is running, then you need to also buy Parallels or VMWare.

File me in as a Bootcamp user. My wife was not demanding that we replace our PC with a Mac, but definitely wanted a Mac. I hate Mac (sorry Apple lovers), but sometimes you compromise in a relationship .

I find a few areas where I really wish we still had a PC other then my work laptop. I, fortunately, already had Windows as I used the license from our PC to load onto our Mac.

Caskbill's program works very well on an Intel based Mac running Windows via bootcamp. I hadn't used it until the recent update since we're BLT owners.

If you can pick up a copy of Windows cheap (education discount, government discount, whatever), it's helpful as I find I also use it for:
- Internet Explorer (some sites just don't want to be friendly with FireFox or Safari)
- Quicken (find me a decent Mac financial software - I dare you and want one)
- This program

I have no need for a "virtual" window to run in it and haven't paid for VMWare or Parallel. I'm ok with the reboot.

But yes, no matter what, you must have Windows and an Intel based Mac.

JWG and the rest of you, thanx again for getting clear about Parellels,reboot and the lot. I really was just looking to run Caskbills' program,don't really have a need for a PC otherwise. Oh yes ,,and i love my MAC

I've thought about creating my own mac program for tracking DVC. We shall see.....

There is a free open source alternative to VMWare and Parallells, and that is VirtualBox at http://www.virtualbox.org/

However, you will still need a copy of Windows to run in that virtual machine.

I've used both virtual box and VMWare fusion. (My grad students insisted on "open source" for something we distributed to a course.) I found vbox to be adequate, but not as good as fusion. $40 well spent, IMO.

I've used all three. VMWare was my favorite about 2.5 years ago when I tested them. I was recommending the free option since this was for such a limited use case.

Glad you took my advice about posting a thread of your own with your problems. My husband, Caskbill , would be smiling to know that his software is again being used for its own merits. Again...thanks for all the help to those that extended it to me.
