Macmillan nurses?

Hi hust wondering if anyone on here is a Macmillan nurse or familiar with their services?

Hi

Macmillan were great with my dad. When he was first diagnosed with terminal cancer they visited him and assessed him. They loaned him equipment and called every week to see how he was doing. Towards the end they arranged for him to stay in a hospice for a week and then 3 days before he died they arranged for a nurse to stay through the night so that my mum could get some sleep.

If I remember rightly, when you are diagnosed with terminal cancer your contact details are given to Macmillan who contact you and offer invaluable help.

I cannot praise them highly enough

We have a macmillian nurse for my ds. Ours is fantastic for everything from filling in forms to just have a listening ear.

We had a MacMillan nurse for many years and a Social Work assistant who worked alongside the nurses and helped us get available benefits and money towards heating / holidays etc........

The nurses helped Phil get a day place at the local hospice to give Eve and myself a break and were on hand to give support whenever we felt like strangling someone.......

We also had a Macmillan relationship counsellor but that proved a waste of time as Phil simply turned on the TV everytime she came to chat...............

my sil had a fabulous macmillan nurse who helped sort out financial stuff and did form filling for her. She contacted her through the hospital initially through her breast care nurse.

They are truly angels.

I have had a lot of support from Macmillan nurses in our area ... they were invaluable and i don't know what we would of done without them. They are a wonderful support and as already mentioned they help out with everything that you cant bring yourself around to do.
They helped with medication, accessibility around the house, paperwork and a friendly face when you needed one.
They provide a personal touch, our nurse used to bring fresh eggs everyday from her hens. They were also a great support to our family, especially my FIL when my MIL passed away.

I just wanted to add to this thread that, to the best of my knowledge you don't have to have been diagnosed as being terminally ill to access MacMillan services Someone please correct me if I'm wrong......

Many people almost fear asking for MacMillan help as they perceive it as being "the end of the line"
It's far, far from that and can offer help and support not only to the person who's ill but to the family and carers who might be struggling to manage and need an impartial ear to listen

Having worked in an Oncology Hospital many of my friends are MacMillan Nurses.......

Thank you everyone, and Alison for the last reply which kind of addressed what I was thinking.
My dad has been diagnosed with pancriatic cancer and if I'm honest with myself really isn't well at all. The added difficulty is that I am over 7 months pregnant and my mum finds it hard to talk to me about it all for fear of upsetting me and I don't like to push it with her as obviously she is fragile as well.

Hi,
so sorry to hear obout your dad must be a very trying and emotional tme for everybody. If you have not yet been introduced to a macmillan nurse i urge you to ask to speak to one.
Many times our macmilian nurse has helped me to handle what is happenng and also allowed me to be honest when there really is noone else you can be honest to !!

Also just to reiterate the point that I also dont think you have to be termnal to access macmillian. In fact my ds no longer "technically" has cancer and our nurse keeps n contact as he and us still need that listening ear !!

you should talk to someone and macmillan is a good start , i have just lost my wife and regret trying to go it alone. there is support out there for you, take every bit of help offered
