My son will be off to college in the fall. I am looking at getting him a new laptop. I am leaning towards a macbook pro as that is what the school reccomends and services there. Would I be ok with a refurbished? If so what would be the minimum processor speed and memory? None of us are familiar with macs. Does it come with word processiong software? We could also go the PC laptop route but if he gets a virus we will be a state away and unable to just pop in a new hard drive like we do now. I am thinking of buying straight from apple if refurbished or if someone highly reccomends new shopping around. Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have an Apple store near you I suggest you visit just to go see the product and talk to the Sales Associates. We got our 17 y/o a Macbook Pro for xmas and went to the Apple store they can explain why their product is so good :) My daughter who graduates college in May went through two Acer laptops from 11th grade till she purchased her Macbook Pro this past October she Loves it and so does my son :thumbsup2

Buying a refurb Mac is ok, they are built to last. As far as microsoft word goes it will not come with it but they do make a mac version that can be purchased.

Def go down there and talk to them. Tell them what you need it for and they will recommend the processor and memory.

A lot of colleges offer students to buy the computer through them with a student discount and install the software that want and or require.

I would check to see if this is a possibility before you actually make the investment and find out later that your needs may be different~

Best wishes! It's an exciting time!

I forgot to mention that when my daughter purchased hers they had a special for college students, I believe she got a Ipod touch for $nothing$!!! If you go to Apple store ask them about upcoming promotions, she did have to show her College ID. Good Luck

I have a MacBook, and I absolutely love it!

I too would recommend going to the Apple Store and talking with a Sales Associate. You can even set up an appointment online if you want, which is great, because then they are solely concentrating on you during that time.

I hadn't athought of going into the store. Thanks. I will also check with the school on what they reccomend in 2 weeks when we attend orientation.

Love love love my Macbook pro, definitely worth the expense, I've purchased other refurbished products from Apple and have been very satisfied. I'd wait till summer if you can, as they always have the get a free ipod touch with a laptop for all the kids getting ready for college.

I also have the Microsoft suite for mac on mine, and it's great.

We're doing the college search with my daughter right now and as long as we purchase the recommended computer the school will service it for her entire four years at no additional cost to us (just the cost of tuition :rotfl:)
