Mac Users: A Question

I'm a Mac user, and I had mentioned a while back that I was planning on getting laptop, and that I wanted to be able to play VMK on it. I said that I would probably get the non-Intel laptop, but was told that I should get the new one with the Intel chip, because it would work better. I'm thinking of going to the Apple store again this weekend, and possibly making a purchase.

So my question is: Does anyone play VMK on the new laptop the Intel chip, and, if so, how does it work? Any problems? Do the games work ok?

When I was in the store, I tried to play on it, but they didn't have Shockwave loaded. The guy did load Shockwave on it, but then it still wouldn't work. It was like it was a version of Shockwave that VMK didn't recognize or something. So that's why I was hesitating to get the one with the Intel chip. (And really the only reason, I guess. I would like to be able to use Office and maybe play other Windows games.) I can see if I can get it to work in the store, but it may take more tinkering than I want to do there in the store. So if someone already has experience with it, I would really appreciate hearing about it.

I have an Intel Pentium 4 chip in my PC laptop and it works sweetly on VMK, but it is also a PC... not sure if your talking aobut a MAC laptop with pc abilities...

My brother has some fancy Apple computer (not a laptop, very new and pricey I am sure) that runs both Windows and Mac programs... I played VMK on that while at DLR and it worked fine.. I could play fireworks quite well on it... I was using the Windows programing to do it.
Did not try the mac side of it.

My dad got the new mac mini and it did the same thing but we read about it you have to switch it to rosetta mode which is like a reader or something, but it made safari really really slow!!!

That's VERY strange.

Yes, running an application under Rosetta on a machine with an Intel processor might make things slower (more likely, just the "same" as it used to be with a slower G4 or G5 processor), but I would NOT expect that to be the case with Safari.

Hasn't Safari been released as a universal binary already, so it shouldn't need Rosetta? (Rosetta is like an emulator, that allows you to run programs originally written / compiled for the PPC G4/G5 processors on the Intel processors. A universal binary application has instructions for BOTH the older PPC as well as the newer Intel processors, so the Rosetta emulation isn't necessary.)

I'm glad to hear confirmation from Laurabearz that running Windows XP on an Intel Mac can run VMK just fine... That sounds like the fastest VMK experience you can get, while not giving up the Mac.

Uh, well it doesn't seem that way, unless the sarfari update happen in the last week, because my aunt got aa mac mini, too. i had to do the same exact thing. (to break in a computer you got to play vmk first )

Just to claify I am not sure what my brothers computer was running on the PC side NOR do I know if is was an Intel chip or XP. All I know it was a new high end Mac where everything including the processor was all in the big moniter. All in one on the Moniter, just plug in the keyboard. But it seemed to work well on VMK running on the windows side (I am guessing it was XP since it looked like what I have on my computer... lol) EDIT TO ADD he has the new IMAC with intel chip....

I made the jump from Mac to PC about 6 or 7 years ago, and I have not looked back. I was a die hard MAC user for decades , in fact I still have the old old OLD all in one Mac from over 20 years ago..... maybe I should fire that puppy up. I also have a G3 that my dad bought, when they first came out over 7 years ago.

(anyone else have over ten old computers around the house??)

Yah, I knew it was Windows XP running on an Intel chip Mac, because that's the only set-up currently available. In fact, it was almost certainly with service pack 2, even.

I *knew* you couldn't have been playing VMK fireworks on an older Mac running, say VirtualPC, because with that, even checking your email is slow, let alone playing VMK

I've been trying to shed all my obsolete computers too... Slowly, they've been left behind -- each time I move, I try to leave maybe 2 of them behind.

oh that is exciting to hear! my dad keeps telling if i would like the new black ibook, he like maybe i'll get it for you for college....which still doesn't mean anything. If i do get it maybe i actually can play vmk on a lap top...

I have the PowerBookG4 laptop and I play VMK on it just fine
(a bit slower start up, but, I have no other problems)

That's what I play on as well. It's mostly OK, but I can't break 190k on fireworks. Just too laggy.

but if you know someone whose house has been sold at a foreclosure auction and that someone still has access to the house, well, that could be a great opportunity to rid your house of all unwanted technology and stuff that the transfer station only accepts on hazardous waste collection days.

Did you know that a broken monitor from a Mac Performa system will punch a hole in the ceiling and then land on the floor with a very interesting sound as it implodes?

That's odd... Because I have the same laptop but I can't even get in JC without DC'ing. Everything else is the same, slower start up and lag...

LOL! Sounds like a GREAT idea.

I held onto a Mac Plus for YEARS, thinking I would get around to converting it into an aquarium...

Now I'm holding on to a G3 Powerbook with the misguided thought that I'll turn it into a digital picture frame...

Perhaps punching holes in houses and imploding things would be more rewarding.

me too, it is very very hard to play vmk, am i doing something wrong, or it is because it is a 12 inch powerbook...
