I need help! We are in the process of getting a new computer and don't know which one to choose. The basic needs we have for a computer are internet, e-mail, itunes. I should tell you that our monitor and key board are less then two years old and work great. So what would you do?? TIA!:goodvibes

I've had my iMac for a couple of months now and LOVE it!! I do miss being able to put my notebook on my lap and sit on the couch, though.

You can get two mac minis for less than the price of one Imac. Use one for everyday computer stuff, and the other for all your entertainment. Hook it up to your television and get rid of cable tv. Most everything can be found online for free.

IF you download lots of movies, TV shows ect... that you want to keep -the mini might not have enough space for you

Make sure you compare specs first. Do you already have a nice monitor? You may need to add that and a keyboard and mouse into the purchase price.

for this, definitely a mac mini.

if you need a lot of storage for video files or more serious graphic/video editing, then get the imac.

Skip the Apple brand unless you are just trying to be hip. Since you are on the "budget board" you must be looking to save money, which you can do by purchasing a non-Apple PC. There isn't anything special an Apple does that any other computer can't do.

This is what I used to say too.....then I got my first Apple.....there is NO going back for me!

My oldest is also into graphics and creating movies though, so that also factors in.

But I LOVE my mac and would take a mini mac over having to buy another PC.

I am not going to get into a debate about it -but the whole virus spy ware thing is enough for me to really prefer the Mac

Mac's can get viruses too. So don't think that just because you have a Mac you don't need anti-virus software.

I have it :)

But Macs rarely get viruses right? That is what everything I have read says -and that has been my personal experience. "They" don't seem to write viruses for them.

You have what? A virus?

Apparently about 2% of viruses are written for Macs and about .5% of THOSE are written for the newer macs.

But it would still stand to good reason to have a virus protection on a Mac too.....just in case.

Sorry I wasn't clear
I have virus protection software not a virus

I have never had a virus on my macs
I have never had a message from my virus software telling me that it is quarantining a virus either

Ah! I see.

Right now I have nothing on my MacBookPro and prob. should get something.

I've had a Mac Mini for a couple months and love it. It comes with HDMI out so I have it hooked up to my HDTV and I can still use my old Windows-specific WMAK. Plus it's easy to upgrade. Love it love it.

How large of a monitor do you have with it? How does it look when used for TV viewing (video out?)

I am still leaning towards an imac, but these little boxes have had me curious as to whether it might be a good extra computer.

Thank you everyone for the replies! Haven't made a decision, but leaning towards the iMac. So hard to choose!

We are an apple family. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE our Apple products!

I was first sold when we got our first computer, after we were married... It lasted 6 years before it was "outdated" and slow. Take that PC! DH has had several PC laptops for work and not one of them has had as few issues as our MAC's have.

So to the person who poo poo's buying a MAC due to budget. I call that a MAC is a budget saver! You will have your MAC for years, and liekly without much of the issues a PC will have.

Good luck!:)

I just got my first Apple Laptop.. and I LOVER IT!

Well, I do understand the budget concerns, and even though I am usually on my 1 year old MacBookPro, I am currently typing this on a 6 year old Dell PC. We tend to keep our products until they DIE! Now, I do completely agree with you re: issues. Right now our PC has stopped communicating with out printer for the third time and this time we can't seem to get it fixed and working.

But it still works for basic emailing and the kids still use it for games.

But I won't buy another one! DH has his work PC laptop and can use this 19" monitor if he wishes when he works from home, but I am replacing it this summer with a Mac (to get the education discounts and freebies....I am really hoping it is an ipod touch again as I will need to buy one if it isn't!)
