Lyft vs Uber

Well, the first and most important comment I would make is this: ANY time you feel unsafe in any kind of transportation -- GET OUT.

Tell the driver to pull over in a safe spot, end the ride and pay them, and then call another ride using the method of your choice. And obviously -- no matter who you are riding with -- you should file a formal complaint with the company informing them of the behavior/driving skills/whatever of their driver. If the company has problematic employees, they can't do anything about it if you remain silent.

Second, I assume from your comments, that you were using Mears Taxi. If you were, and you had more than one bad experience, maybe it's time to look at other alternatives like Uber and Lyft. I personally have always considered Mears to be a good company, but if you found them problematic, use something else.

\|I have both apps on my phone now for uber and lyft and am happy to use, and now i know i will tip uber direct and add onto lyft app, to be clear on the scary driver, we used the mears app...but he was not the cab we ordered (as mears phoned us to see why we missed our cab) wasn't till we got home we found out there are guys just trying it on outside hotels in yellow cabs pretending to be mears...this is what happened to us, we sussed it after that, I am confident how the system works now..... I come from a very small group of islands in scotland where we know all out taxi drivers by name and always have a good chat with them when using :) thanks all for advice I appreciate it

I exclusively use Lyft. I did a case study in school about ridesharing services and I personally like the Lyft model better and appreciate the thorough vetting process. UberX can be a little interesting (look into it). If I had to use Uber, it would be UberBlack or UberSUV.

Under the new Florida law, the vetting process is very rigorous -- and it is modeled exactly after Uber's current vetting process.

Here's what is involved:
  • Criminal History checks
    • Local
    • Florida
    • National (FBI)
  • Sexual Predator Checks
    • Florida
    • National
  • DHS Watch List
  • Complete driving record
  • Photo verification of identity
  • Verification of Driver's License
  • Verification of Vehicle Registration
  • Verification of Insurance coverage
  • 15 or 18 point vehicle inspection by an ASE certified mechanic
I drive for (and like) both companies, but I'm not sure what Lyft's background checks consist of, because they are very opaque about those things. They asked for the same documentation Uber did; what they did with it, I have no idea.

I'm not sure what you mean by UberX being "interesting." UberX is exactly the same as regular Lyft -- including often the same car and driver because many of us drive for both companies. UberX is the basic platform used for probably 90% of all Uber rides. Nothing special or especially interesting about it -- get in, A to B safely, get out. Not too complicated.

I was wondering if anyone has used Lyft while at WDW. We've used Uber in the past to get to parks quicker in the evening and home from ADR's in the evening. We found it to be a value, however with all the bad news around Uber I'm wondering if Lyft might be worth a try.

Thanks,

Doug :goofy:

Definitely try Lyft! Sign up close to the time you will be going and they will offer you discounts (usually only good for a short period of time, like 30 days). I used them last year and was happy. I too am avoiding Uber.
