Luigi's Flying Tires is it a failure??

Wow! Lots of interesting info on this ride! it seems like it might need a bit of time to settle in (and maybe for Disney to get rid of the beach balls?) I always like to give any new ride a try, but won't spend longer than an hour in any line. Looking forward to a December visit, hoping some kinks will be ironed out!

BTW, totally agree with this. The balls are a hindrance, IMO. We watched many many many cycles of loading and unloading and the balls just make the process longer. People trying to grab a ball prior to getting on their tires. People trying to play with the balls after getting off their tires. The balls did not add much. They could perhaps shave some time off if they nixed the balls.

That was way too many times typing "balls" in one post.

For those worried about the negative reviews - listen....Carsland itself is amazing. It is just like walking into the movie. It is such a trip to walk down the street. If you aren't able (or choose not to due to the wait) to ride Luigi's, it will not ruin your experience. The place is simply awesome!

This may or may not have made my day...and I'm not even visiting Carsland until next year.

I'm going for the early AP hour Sunday and heading there first! I LOVED the original flying saucers when I was a kid and am hoping this is at least close to those memories - and 1 I can share with my kids.

Bob Gurr ( designer for the original ones) gave it his blessing so I'm going with that. Good to know the balls can hurt though....

Haven't been yet but early reports weren't too promising. Is it worth skipping if the lines are really long?

Ummm.... it's been open to the public 4 days. I think it's a bit early for anyone to declare anything in Cars Land "a failure."

And as with countless things at DLR, everyone's preferences are different. Things that I would say not to waste your time on, others may love. And vice-versa.

As with anything, check it out and give it your own judgement.

That's what I plan on doing,
Dreams

Sorry about digging up this old thread, but I went on the Flying Tires again today. Ok. I love this ride now. I was riding solo. I sat dead middle and I just went with the tire and did not fight it, and boy did I pick up speed. I was able to turn, and maneuver with ease. The loading and unloading still is slow but it seems they are trying to speed it up. Give this a chance. It will be a lot more enjoyable if you listen to the CM on how to fly. If you are not riding solo then don't fight each other in the tire, work together. One thing I noticed as well is it seemed like the air was a lot stronger tonight. What I mean is when I first rode I could not tell that the tire was off the ground. Tonight I was able to tell when I was either watching from the line or when it started while I was on it. It is so much fun.

FYI if you're wearing a skirt make sure to hold it down. I went last week and wore a knee-length skirt and as soon as I walked onto the ride my skirt blew up from the blowers on the ground

We enjoyed it. I had heard all the negative reports before we rode it so that might have influenced my decision when we got off the ride we all enjoyed it. It was very easy to ride as well.

Totally agree. Do not be influenced by the negative reviews. It's a really fun ride.

We rode during a preview a week before opening. Our first pass walking by Lugigi's, the line was about an hour and we didn't want to wait that long ... came by a little later and the line was a managable 20 minutes.
The queue is very fun ... lots of "memorabilia" from races all over ... i liked looking at it and I think that this was very well thought our and clever. Nice details.
The ride itself was fun ... DH, DS4 and I laughed a lot and kept changing our minds about which way to lean. the balls seem to be put there to just riders a sense of something to do with the tire -- like, oh, let's try to go over there to get a ball and so that would make us all have a common goal and "reason" to drive our tire in a certain direction.
We only went on it once, but I had fun. I just now asked my husband (about a month since we came back) and he said he remembered it being boring. :confused3
Kiddo is asleep, but while I think he liked it, he doesn't talk about it, so it must not have made much of an impresion.

Bottom line - this ride can be fun - I wouldn't make any judgements before riding it. Your tolerance for the line's wait time is your own decision, obviously, but in my opinion htere no reason to wait for more than 20 minutes or so for it.

have fun!

Well I can't speak about the wait because I have a GAC
They take a bunch of people from line and put them in this middle area forming a little mob which I was in the front of. They then move you to the "lines" and for some strange reason despite me being in the front I didn't get on the next ride (me and others too). Then they give you a small wooden flag (no folks not a souvenir) which basically guarantees you a tire on the next ride (they also do this on Dumbo with the black wooden feathers).
My husband went solo while I rode with my son. While my husband and I aren't morbidly obese we are chubby and wasn't sure if we could fit three across (we could have).
If you want a ball get it before getting in the vehicle because it is close to impossible to get it while the ride is in motion.
The big problem I can see with this is, the strap isn't mechanized like in TOT, Star Tours, etc where if the seatbelt is unbuckled the ride automatically stops. With this I can see some kid unbuckling himself in the middle of the ride to go get a ball.
However the ride is NOT that fast, even once you get going it isn't fast and the outer portion of the ride (which would strike a person first) is inflated and soft.
They are very cautious about stepping OVER the inflated tire not ON it because that would damage the portion and possibly deflate it. That could be the big expense in repairing this ride.
Out of the 3 rides in Carsland this was my least favorite. (Believe it or not Mater's jamboree was my favorite)
So the ride doesn't go fast and yes if you are trapped between a group or something then that is your ride squished between other people.
The bumping on the ride is not rough by any means. The ride is not fast. For me the beach ball didn't hurt was getting hit by it. I did take a ball before the ride started and tossed it to my husband. I wouldn't be comfortable so much as tossing a beach ball on this ride to a total stranger.
So is the ride worth a two hour wait should I have had to stand in it? No. But that's just my opinion.
Leaning is the way to steer the tire but sometimes that doesn't even work then you get people trying to "jerK" to tire forward which makes it look like a dirty at is being done to the tire. Sorry I had to go there because it cracked me up while on the ride.

I like this ride a lot. It helped that I've only ridden it for APEE and EMH when it was a walk on. You can really achieve a decent speed if you choose a vector to lean towards that gives you a good amount of running room, i.e. lots of open space. My three year old thought it was hysterical to bump into things. We pretty much totally ignored the beach balls.

Incidentally, by the end of APEE and EMH the line tends to be very long indeed as RSR riders come off the ride and hop right into the Luigi line.
