I keep reading that the weight limit for checked luggage is 60lbs. However the JET BLUE website states 70 lbs, is that correct??????

On most airlines the limit per bag is 50 lbs. JetBlue is one of the last ones offering the 70 lb weight limit. Also remember that it is PER bag, not in total. I have seen several folks trying to convince the agent that "since we have two bags totaling 90 lbs it's OK that one of them is 75" No, it's not and they get to repack in the airport.

The weight limit per bag is now 50 lbs. I know this is true for DL, UAL, USAir, Continential & NW. Not sure about Jetblue they don't fly to Dayton, OH. Each ticketed person can check 2 bags & carry-on one + one personal item (purse, backpack, briefcase or small duffle) They are very strict about this. I usually have my carry-on and small duffle that I can put my purse in and it fits under seat. If I forget & try to board with purse, carry-on & duffle they stop me. :rolleyes2

We learned the hard way that they do indeed enforce the 50# weight limit! We were fine on our flight down, but we bought too much "stuff" in DD and of course I had no access to a scale! There we were in the middle of the airport trying to repack two pullmans and stuffing our carry ons to the max! Totally embarrasing! Last trip DH and I got first class seats on Continental where you are still allowed 70#!

If JetBlue's website states that the weight limit per bag is seventy pounds, then that's what it is. Keep in mind this is subject to change at any time and potential passengers should keep checking the website.
Now, my question - what do you all pack in a single suitcase that causes it to weigh over seventy, or even fifty, pounds? :)

I always thought my luggage was heavy but I've noticed the scales when I checked at the counter and it's usually in the 30 to 35 pound range. It must be a large piece of luggage to hold over 50 pounds.

The short answer is that the limits on size, weight, and quantity vary by airline. So check your airline's website, and don't worry about what the limits are for other airlines.

Jetblues weight limit is 70 lbs per bag, if they decide to weigh the bag. Going from Syracuse they did but when we left Orlando airport they did not weigh they bags and I know for a fact that one was heavy as I could hardly lift it.

If you are leaving WDW you can now check the bags at the airline desk at the hotels. I was 9lb over, and just was able to reshuffle the jeans. I got one of my medium size bags up to 45 lbs...which I thought was pretty heavy for a smaller bag. Thos big ones are only good for very light things that are bulky. ;)

It's really not unusual for a suitcase to weigh 50 (or more) #s. We travel fairly often and I learned quickly how to pack a suitcase efficiently to maximize the space ~ cut down on having to take too much luggage. Used to be a good idea, but not anymore.....now we have to take 2 bags instead of one so we can be under the weight limit on each.

LOL Depends on the time of year. Winter = heavy clothing, summer = sneakers!! Instead of bring one suitcase we now bring 2 to spread the weight out.

I just came back from visiting my DD and was right at the 50 pound limit on SW. On the return trip I was over by a pound. I was so confused. I was laughing with the skycap, telling him I had the same clothes I went with and how could they now be heavier....joke was on me...I forgot the 1 pound rum cake DD she brought back for me from the Caymans. The skycap was so nice and let the overage go. BTW the cake was fabulous.

Ah, okay, thanks everyone! I wasn't being critical, I was genuinely curious (lest anyone get defensive :)) Webbie - I wasn't thinking; I don't go anywhere that requires winter clothing - that's where I come from :)

The other "trick" is to use those space bags. "WOW look at ALL I got in here" Yes, and it weighs a TON LOL!

The density of summer clothing can be much greater than winter clothing. When I fill up my extra-large suitcase with shorts, t-shirts, etc., it is much heavier than when I fill it with insulated coveralls, jacket, sweaters, and a few remaining clothes that will fit. The good news is that I may not need the extra-large suitcase for summer travel. :sunny:

Like the lyrics in Jimmy Buffet's, Everybodys Talkin', "...goin' where the weather suits my clothes..." :thumbsup2

LOL. Much as I love Jimmy's work, he didn't write that one. It was written by a songwriter named Fred Neil as the theme for "Midnight Cowboy" in 1969. (It was sung by Harry Nilsson on the soundtrack.) It's one of the most-recorded pop songs out there, even Perry Como recorded it.

Lots of the lyrics of the song are kind of nonsensical, but that line definitely was originally written as, "Going where the weather suits my clothes."

"I'm going where the sun keeps shining / Thru' the pouring rain, / Going where the weather suits my clothes, / Banking off of the North East wind, / Sailing on summer breeze / And skipping over the ocean like a stone."

so what happens if it's over the 50-70lb limit. What do they charge you? Or do you have to repack to make it in their weight range?

Depends on the airline, so you need to check your own airline's website. These policies can change w/ no notice, so you should double-check the day before you fly.

At the moment, JetBlue charges $50/bag, and SWA is $25/bag. You would be given an opportunity to shift items around between bags to lower the weight if you can.

If the bag is also over a total of 62" (L + W + H). the oversize charge will be $50 on either one of these airlines. If it is oversize AND overweight, you have to pay both fees.
