Barring anymore hurricanes disrupting our lives -- we took a direct hit from Charley, sustaining almost $30K worth of damage to our home, then got some extra wind and rain with Frances. NOW, we're nervously awaiting Ivan, who it taking a similar path as Charley -- we are scheduled to escape Florida on the 9/18 sailing. :bounce:

I am preparing to pack both for possible evacuation and cruising and wonder if my suitcase is too large. Are there weight/size restrictions? I'm not flying, so I don't have to worry about airline restrictions.

My suitcase measures 28" x 34" and is 13.5 inches deep. It is a monster suitcase, which regularly brings comments from fellow travelers when we stop for the night on the road. I have a second matching case, that is a bit smaller.

So, any thoughts on whether:
a: we'll having a problem checking bags this big
b: where will we put them in the stateroom? I do plan on putting the "smaller" bag into the larger one.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom/experience. Please keep those of us in the path of Ivan in your prayers!

I don't know the exact dimensions of our largest suitcases, but they didn't fit anywhere in the cabin except under the bed, and even then, we couldn't just slide them under because they were too deep, so we had to LIFT the end of the bed up before we could slide them. I don't think DCL has any size restrictions, and since you won't have to worry about airline restrictions, I think you'll be fine with what you have.

I am sorry about the damage to your home :(

Stay safe and enjoy your cruise! :)

The only luggage restriction I'm aware of is that carry ons must fit thru the airport size scanner. We regularly take a 30 inch bag. As to storage of the big bag...several options. First, it may well fit under the bed if you just lift the edge of the bed a little. You can lift, slide the bag under, then put the bed down--there is a little rail that hangs lower than the rest of the system.

You can take the life jackets from the closet and put them under the bed, giving you the top shelf of the closet for stuff. You can stand up the large bag in the 1/2 side of the closet next to the safe and shelves.

If it fits and doesn't contain anything you need, under the bed works best.

We had two huge bags that didn't fit under the bed, even with lifting the bed. We stood them on end along the wall by the nightstands and they weren't in the way at all. The others fit under the bed with the lifejackets (they were at the end and easily accessible if we needed them.)

Another option would be to keep the bag at the side of the bed. We put the coffee like table on the side of the bed near the foot. It was out of the way since we mostly entered the bed from the foot anyway. This would be great place to put xtra luggage.

Does Disney not offer the option of storing your large suitcases for you - somewhere other than in your room? On several other cruises I have been on, the steward or stewardess would take our suitcases and store them somewhere after we unpacked and would return them in time to repack. This was great.
