Hi,
my sister flies alot and on a recent trip to Australia she had her digital camera stolen out of her luggage at some point during her flight.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with items stolen from their luggage now that luggage can no longer be locked. We are leaving for WDW soon and I'm wondering what everyones thoughts are as to what should and should not be packed in checked baggage.

Thanks
Martha

Your sister put the digital camera in her checked luggage.
Sorry! This was NOT a good idea BEFORE you could not lock your luggage.

As your sister has probably learned, airlines will not cover electronic items.

EXPENSIVE electronics should NEVER have gone in your luggage, locked or unlocked!

I agree with Carol, never put anything valuable in your checked luggage! Not only the theft possibility but that luggage gets knocked around pretty good.

Luggage locks are useless at best. Knowing that should tell travelers to carry on valuables.

Wow i learned something new today.I saw nothing about not being able to lock your luggage on the swa website.I have never flown before so i have no clue!
I have a question for all you frequent flyers.
I am wanting to take a camcorder as well as my digital camera and my cell phone. What are my options here? Can i turn off my cell phone and put it in my carry on bag?

You can lock your luggage, but, if security decides to open it, they will cut the lock off. It is suggested that you don't lock it, but, you can if you wish.
You can take your camera, cam corder and phone on the plane, you will have to shut the phone off, however.

I have a patient who is a TSA agent and she states that you can lock your luggage after it's gone through security checks. That being said, I still would not put anything of value in your checked luggage as locks can be broken.

I have heard this theory of you can lock your luggage after the TSA checks it.

To me this is a RED FLAG for someone with dishonest intentions.

"LOOK! They thought thier luggage was valuable enough to lock, let's open it!" Those luggage locks are USELESS!!!! There are ways past all of them and if nothing else works, the thief can just rip the zipper open and ruin your luggage. Yep, the airline will fix it, but.....

Electronics and jewerly should NEVER EVER be put in checked baggage. The airline liablity on these items is NOTHING!

ok i have a few questions for those of you who have flown since 9/11.
1.for carry one baggage can we use like the 10.00 bags on wheels? It looks like a backpack on wheels,(do you know what i am talking about?LOL)
2.If we can use these backpack on wheels can i put whatever i can cram in there?Like my cell phone and digital camera?

i read that you are allowed 1 carry on bag and 1 personal item like camera,gameboy,laptop,etc.....
ok my question is can i carry my camera on as my personal item and put my cellphone in my carryon????

I hope this makes sense without being tooo confusing.
Thanks for your help if you can help.LOL

There is a list on the TSA site that tells you what you cannot bring on board. Read it, it is very amusing, to say the least.
If the stuff is not on the list, then you can bring it in your carry on.
Each airline has size restrictions, so, it is best to check with your specific airline for size. Those restrictions are listed on each airline's site.

1. As long as the bag fits into the overhead bin (most airports have a box you can use to test), it's fine. A lot of people use small rolling suitcases.

2. Yes, as long as you don't put any pointy objects in your carry on. Pointy objects will be confiscated as part of the TSA's Great Pointy Object Search. (as an example, you are allowed to bring round-tipped scissors, but not pointy-tipped scissors)

wow thanks guys you guys ROCK!!
I guess i will print out the guidelines from swa.I am hoping to be using them to fly in Nov.I am also crossing my fingers i can get a flight for around 200.00 pp r/t from okc.
Thanks for your help it is much appreciated.I know my trip is a long ways out but i already have my kids bags packed!LOL.

No pointy tipped scissors, but, corkscrews are ok (apparently they don't have points, lol), knitting needles are ok, no more than two lighters. As I said, the TSA list is, at the very least, an amusing read.

In addition to SWA's guidelines, you might want to go here also.
SWA does not print out all the oks and no nos. http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=183&content=090005198007e349
