Luggage questions

I'm purchasing new luggage for our family and will be ordering mine this weekend but I have a couple of questions. 1. Will a 29" and small carry on be enough for a 2 1/2 week trip in August? Bear in mind that I'll be packing mainly shorts and tshirts/tank tops and they'll be placed in Ziplock bags. 2. TSA recommends not locking luggage but does not prohibit doing so. I'll be taking an empty (or mostly empty) piece of luggage for souvenirs and planned on locking it only on our way back from Disney. So should I lock it? 3. I was thinking about getting large rolling duffels for each of my boys. Any opinions/experiences with rolling duffels?

Thanks in advance for the replies!:D

I would not lock it. If there is anything valuable in the checked luggage, I would switch it to my carry on. If the TSA has to check it and it is locked they will break the lock, or the bag, or whatever to get in it.

Is the 29" just for you? If so, I would expect it would be enough.
If not, I would consider more luggage.

As for teh size, very hard to answer... however in regards to locking according to a few sources the TSA has allowed a few types of locks to be used... basically ones they can open and then lock again without breaking. I think there was a thread about this some time ago, but neverhteless check out
http://www.tamperseal.com/
and they have some info, or search for TSA luggage locks or something like that on Yahoo.com or google.com..HTH:)

Gail, the 29" would be just for me and I was also planning on getting a 29" for each of my boys and hubby. It'll be too complicated for the boys to share luggage, so to avoid bickering, each will have their own.

WCMouse, I was looking at the locks you mentioned, the one TSA can open, on Ebags. I guess they have a TSA seal on them so that they know that they don't need to break the lock since they have a series of codes or combinations to open them. I'm just worried the one luggage full of souvenirs might be ransacked.

Yes, there are locks that they have a list of combos to open, but, you can bet that any one can get that list also. The fact that they may have the combos does NOT mean they will use them, in fact, more often than not, to keep the line moving, they will break them. If they have to open the bag, you will not know they did, they put stuff back very nicely. We have had ours opened three times and the only way we knew was because they left a little flier in there telling us. Rule of thumb, don't pack anything you value. Carry it on or ship it from, in this case, WDW.
I have linked some information from the TSA http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=183&content=0900051980071051

I read the link another poster put up here and frankly, I think there is some major deceptive advertising going on here. I also read their disclaimer.

Our theory has always been, "take it, don't break it". IMHO, locking your bags is like locking a convertable. If the TSA wants in, they will get in. If a theif wants your bag, no lock is going to stop that.

FOUR 29-inch bags for 2 wks in Fla. in Aug? Yikes! I'm using one 29 in. (for 3 people) for 2 weeks in N. Europe at the end of March!

If you want to get your kids luggage so that they will have luggage, that's one thing, but so they won't fight over sharing? Bad idea. Any seasoned traveller will tell you that it is not a good idea to segregate individual cases for travelling companions. You should mix clothing for the whole party into each case, so that if one or more cases get lost, their owners will not be stranded without clothing. When you arrive, assign a drawer to each person, unpack the cases into the drawers, and then put the dirties back into the cases as you go. You're already packed when you're ready to leave.

Big duffels are fine, but do get the wheeled sort, with the in-line skate wheels, definitely, much easier to transport. 29's are a bit on the large side for what the avg. young male would normally use, though, they tend to be sparing with stuff when they travel.
Be careful about the weight of the bags themselves, airlines have gotten much pickier about overweight charges, so go with the lightest fabric you can.

Don't lock with locks. Zip ties or twisty ties are good for soft bags to be sure that the zippers stay shut, but don't waste your money on locks, b/c all ads to the contrary, TSA *will* cut them off. As for the extra bag for souvies, my advice would be to pack a flattened cardboard box instead, along with a roll of package tape (with a tear edge) in the checked luggage. If you buy breakables, have the shop give you packing materials for them. The business center at your resort can send the package home for you, as insured as you want it to be. (If you have access to a UPS or FedEx account, bring along a coded waybill, too. My office lets me use theirs, and when the bill comes, I just reimburse the co. for the shipping charge.) Of course, you can always have the shops at WDW sent things directly home for you.

Castillo Mom-

Whenever I fly out of Madison, WI or Orlando, FL there has always been the option to wait for airport security to search my bag, in my presence, and then I would be allowed to lock my luggage back up with any type of lock that I choose. There can be quite a wait to choose this option and I have never actually done so, but if it is very important to you to have your luggage locked, it is an option.

I don't tend to bring very valuable things with me when I travel. Things that are really important to me I take in my carry-on bag so that I can keep my eyes on it.

If you are planning on buying a lot of souvenirs at Disney, you could pay to have it shipped home. Then you don't have to pay sales tax and you don't have to lug around lots of things.

As far as rolling duffles go. I love them for travel in a car because you can open them up wide and see everything so well. I love them for transporting recreational equipment. But I HATE them for manuevering in an airport. Maybe I just have bad luck, but since the concept is a big wide open space and the handle is located on the small side of the bag. That means the entire contents shift to the bottom as you are rolling them. This makes the bag very bottom-heavy and awkward to maneuver.

I take a 29" bag for myself as well as a rolling carry-on, a purse, and sometimes an additional duffle bag for about a week's vacation. I don't like to do laundry so I need to bring enough items not to have to wash. I also tend to bring clothes that I can layer for all seasons. I'm pretty sloppy so for me to be able to wear something more than once on vacation seems rare. Guess that's why I need so much luggage. I also tend to pack dress shoes, sandals, sneakers . . . such a *girl* in that regard.

My husband however can fit everything into about a 22" with no additional luggage. Will only wear his favorite pair of shoes, two pairs of jeans seem to make it a week just fine. Shorts? Not for him. "Whatever the hotel has" in regards to shampoo, soap, etc.

Typical girl needs "her" shampoo, conditioner, make-up etc. So I guess I'm agreeing that you definitely need the 29" but not sure if the rest of your family will.

Gail, I'm starting to think that the smartest thing to do is just ship our souvenirs home because I'll be a nervous wreck if I don't. This is our first trip to WDW including side trips to Universal and Miami. I did a little more research on those TSA approved locks this weekend and decided not get them. I think they'd break the locks too before trying to find the correct code to open them. Oh, and thanks for the link Gail.

NotUrsula, I needed to get new luggage for everyone anyway, so the bickering wasn't the only reason I was getting them all separate pieces but I do like the idea of intermixing their clothing. I just want them to each be responsible for their individual bags.

JC Butterfly, I think I'll probably use every inch of that 29" inch bag! Actually, I purchased a bag this weekend along with a 22" carry on. It's made of ballistic nylon which is supposed to be sturdier. Got a great deal, only $59 for the 29" and $39 for the 22". I'm with you on the packing like a girl! Fortunately it'll be summer so clothes will be smaller, light weight fabrics.

Thanks to all of you for the advice. That's why I love the Dis!

:D
