Luggage Question For Southwest

DH and I were just reading on the Southwest site and they ask that you not pack food in your checked luggage...has anyone had problems with this? I thought we'd bring some snacks and such, but now I'm wondering if it will be worth the effort.

I took my chances this past summer and packed a whole bag of snacks and they arrived just fine.

I wonder what SWA's reasoning is for encouraging us not to pack snacks in our bags. It doesn't say "Thou shalt not..", so safety probably isn't an issue. I might can understand no liquidy items. Are they worried about crusm and rats or roaches? Does anyone know their reasoning?

I flew last week. One of my bags was over the limit and another was under, so I took out the cans of tuna I had and transferred bags in front of the woman checking me in. Not one word from her so I guess they don't really care. (BTW she was a stickler for that 50 lbs; my bag was over by 2 lbs and she wanted to charge me $25 extra. Was really obnoxious about it too. Whatever. I bet she couldn't pack only two suitcases for a family of 4 for 9 days)

It's because the X-Ray machines pick up the density of the food and it looks like Explosives in some cases. This is what I've been told.As I'm a real pickey eater I have to take MY certian snacks and fly 3 to 4 times a year on SWA without a problem.

As for the weight thing yea we got 1 of those as well .Thank god I packed my new DVC tote bag I just put some shoes in it and was set.

Thanks for the replies...just not sure what I am willing to risk and have to deal with....I really want an easy trip with as few hassles as possible.

Hmmm?!?!?! Guess I'll keep mulling it over

If it is xrayed and think they see something, the worst thing that will happen is that they will open it up right? They won't discard any of it, right? They are suppose to put it back like they found it, right? We don't lock our luggage anyway, I really wound't care if they ate a little, just as long as they left something for my kids to snack on while we are there. :-)

In addition to that, if you watch the A & E show Airline (Monday nights, 10 and 10:30 PM Eastern) you would be surprised at the food some passengers try to bring onboard or check in their luggage. Let's just say Southwest is covering themselves; they can and quite obviously do make exceptions, but this policy comes in handy when someone is trying to bring fifty pounds of half-frozen fish in their checked luggage.

As for the weight-sticklers, I'm sure it's either a union issue or something. Think about it - if they let a passenger check a bag that's 52 pounds on this trip, then next time the pax is going to pack 55 pounds. And if that one goes through, the return trip it may weigh 60 pounds. Sure, 50 pound limits are arbitrary, especially given that some airlines permit 75 pounds per bag, but them's the rules :)

I have another related question- does a car seat count as a carryon piece? How about a stroller?

Thanks,
Lisa

I'm confused as to how much we are allowed to bring with us? It will be me and my fiancee and her 14 year old daughter, it's three adult fares so how much stuff can we bring? 2 bags a piece at 50 pounds a bag? I have no idea.

According the same huffy woman I had...we are allowed 3 50 lb carry ons per person.

We do one large suitcase (under the 50 pound mark) per person. Then we do one more suitcase for extra sneakers, non essential toiletries, and a sweatshirt for each person. We do laundty while at WDW and have nver had a problem packing what we needed on SWA.

As for food - we do not pack cans, glass bottles, or knifes.
We do a small food shop when we ge to WDW. We buy a small jar of mayo (refigs in room now), a cheap can opener, a cheap paring knife, some cans of tuna (one dinner in room after a long day at the park), crackers, snacks, and fruit. We also pick up about 12 water bottles.

You could also ship a box of food to your resort. Remember to say to hold for "Your Name" and your arrival date at the resort.

The Disney Florist has a nice selection of fruit, cheese, snacks, cookies, soda, wine, water bottles which can be sent to your room in a nice Mickey bag, or Mickey basket, or ..... with Disney plushes, balloons....
