Luggage mistransferred

Fun thing happened today. I am on a split stay between Grand Floridian and Polynesian. This is a standard December stay for me as I have bought just enough points to do this each year.

I was going to pull my luggage myself, but I was told that the walkway is closed for construction and the current walking path involves cross the road and going through parking lots.

The luggage transfer has been taking longer than usual and bell services was trying to figure it out. Then I remembered that I have air tags in my luggage. A few clicks in my phone later and I am able to let them known that my luggage is at Old Key West. Not sure if the person I gave my luggage to heard Po-Lee and understood Old Key , or if it just got out on the wrong truck. Looking forward to reading the tag once it arrives.

Moral of the story: if you are doing a split stay, get some trackers for your luggage.

Edit: tag has “old” written on it. Second moral, ask to see what they wrote.

Funny, I transferred my luggage on Sunday from the Grand to Jambo. No issues.

The wonders of Disney services! I’m glad your showed up!

How accurate is an air tag? Was your luggage inside the OKW baggage room, or was it on a van that was making a stop there? It could have still been in transit.

Our luggage was lost on our trip. Going from Kidani to BLT. Good think I opted to lug all meds with us. DH was going to carry just the next dose, not the evening pills. Didn't get bags until about 8 pm. BLT gave us a LL pass for the trouble.

As a user of them, I can say they update location about every 5-10 minutes as long as some sort of iPhone wanders within 30ft (or so) of it. When you try to track them, it also tells you how long ago it the tag was last seen.

It says something like "At 123 Main St ... 7 minutes ago"

Several years ago, DH & I did a split stay between WL and BW. We used bell services to transfer our luggage. IMHO that was a BIG mistake since our luggage never showed up until after 11:30PM that night and that was after many calls inquiring as to where our luggage was. We checked out or WL around 9AM so our luggage must have been temporarily misplaced. After that experience we always move our luggage if we are doing a split stay. I know plenty of people have luck with this service but I'm not willing to try it again.

Interesting - you would have never known if you didn't have the trackers! We've used the bag transfer many times over the years and never had our bags lost - but I could see it happening on occasion. Good you could tell them where to find your bags!

It was well after all luggage should be delivered, and I doubt luggage going from Grand Floridian to the Polynesian would be routed on a truck going to Old Key West. But, to answer your question, it is accurate enough that I could see where in the OKW building my two trackers were, and after I was told that someone was going to drive from the Polynesian to go pick them up I could see the bags get shifted over to where they could be more easily picked up.

I think the suggestion is based on the idea that each resort has one transfer truck (rather than a fleet with one for every other resort), and simply waits until a certain time (or several: early, late, etc.) to get all transfer luggage loaded, then just makes the loop to every other resort, dropping off what needs to be dropped off and picking up what needs to go back with them. It's not like hundreds, or even dozens of guests are making a move on any given day, so one decent-sized panel van would do the trick. Sending a truck to every other resort, with maybe a handful of luggage pieces, would be really inefficient.

Certainly under certain circumstances, they'd send your luggage directly (maybe a last-minute move, late transfer, problem with the room), but just bulk planned movement wouldn't require many individual trips.

I usually tip 20 each end of a transfer, I’m not sure if that’s a great tip or just an ok tip, but my stuff has never been lost or late to arrive. I guess I should be thankful reading some of these horror stories, 11:30 pm would ruin my entire night. Grocery delivery is another story entirely…

20?! Now I feel like I’m under tipping!!

I have a friend who has had problems with luggage transfer. We now grab an Uber or Lyft XL, it’s typically $15 plus tip and we know our luggage is at the new resort in the morning. Last time, I transferred from BLT to BWV before 9:00 and then got on the bus to AK. I got the text that my room was ready around 1:45, it was nice to go back and have my luggage there to unpack.

We frequently do split stays and I prefer to just grab an Uber/Lyft and take the luggage over to the second resort myself and drop it off. That way, I know it's there and I know it will be waiting for me when we return from the park.
