I am now packing my suitcases for the trip!! We have two smaller carryons from when we flew Delta a couple of years ago. I also see that Airtran has 55 inches for a carryon rather than 45 like Delta. I have a 24 inch (official label on the tag) roller bag but the 24 doesnt seem to include the legs. Do the airlines count the legs also. It would be great if they dont because that would prevent me from having to borrow/buy another bag. Anyone with AirTran carryon experience? We are sitting in the middle of the plane so I am hoping there is enough room in the bins.

Thanks!

You do have to count the legs, and the handle, if it sticks up. When I have flown Air Tran they have made announcements prior to boarding that you had to be sure your checked bag was within the proper size, or it would be gate checked. Sorry for the not good news.

Airtran is known for shenanigans such as leaning the bag against the wall and including the sliver space between the bag and the wall as part of the size.

So you either have to get a bag that is somewhat smaller than the published measurements or get to the airport early enough to summon a complaint resolution officer if you run into this kind of problem.

As stated, you absolutely must count wheels and handles in the measurements of luggage. If your luggage is too big, it won't fit in the overhead bin.

24" is too long for any overhead bin when the bag is correctly positioned wheels or handle in and not sideways, at least on the planes I have flown. There may be exceptions.

The correct way to position a bin bag is the way your airline tells you to do it. There are some airlines which allow bin bags which will only fit in the bin lengthwise. Reduces the number of bin bags which will fit .

It depends on the aircraft. Airtran has two types of planes in their fleet, 717 and 737, both larger planes with full size overheads. The 717 has only two seats on one side, thus smaller overhead bin space on that side. If you are on that side, put your bag on the other side....it's deeper, so most bags can go in wheels first.

One key factor is the "squish" factor..is your bag soft and can it squish in a little as you shove it in there and try to close the door. If so, you might have a little give. If it's a hard shell, you won't be as flexible. I have a softer bag, sort of a duffel but firm, that has wheels. The corners can fold in a bit if needed to close the door or conform to the bin.

All airlines make that announcment about bag size but unles you're on a smaller plane they don't send the "bag police" around with rulers. Unless it's really huge, they probably won't say anything until they see you trying to stuff it in and it won't fit.
