Hi there,

Im leaving this wednesday for Florida....I was wondering if it is still ok to use luggage locks...(I haven't flown in a few years)

If they are going to search through my luggage will I still be with it to unlock it for them or will they break the locks (after Ive already checked it)??

So what do you guys think...luggage locks or no luggage locks???

Thanks

We flew SWA from Kansas City to Orlando on 4/8 and we waited until we checked our bags at curbside to put the locks on just in case they needed to search them. I asked the guys at curbside check in if we should lock them and they said it would be okay. Of course, I realize they could open them if they wanted to as I just use the little locks that came with the suitcases. I really just use the locks so they don't accidently come unzipped as they are being tossed around.

for the luggage that goes in cargo, ie not carry on we actually use zip ties.. We know just by looking at the zip tie if the luggage has been tampered with.

I would NEVER checak an unlocked bag. I have combo locks that I purchased from a locksmith, they are very strong, and are all set with the same combo, so no scrambling for keys or trying to figure out which loc is which if we need to open something. They cost a few bucks more, but are worth it. I also have a set of identically keyed locks from the locksmith, but stopped using them as I didn't want to fuss with the keys anymore.

I bought combo locks by Samsonite at Target last week for $5.99 each. You can set whatever combo you want. These have got to be better than those little locks with the keys, that everyone can open with their keys.

I have never locked my luggage. My theroy is if they want in, they are going in. Even those nice expensive locks won't stop them. So I just don't check valuables like jewerly and cameras. So far in thousands of trips I have been very lucky. I had one co-worked who always locked her luggage and had it rifled thur several times. My theroy became they figured that was where the good stuff was.
