Luggage issue at jambo house

Just for the future you always need to retain your baggage claim information. The system works really well for the most part but things happen. Like I said I had a tag ripped off but I had my claim information and gave it to ME they were able to find my bag very quickly and called me once they did letting me know it was going on the next bus at the resort. There really wasn't anything for the hotel to do in this situation as the issue was with ME.

Oh, many issues that started with TSA or baggage handlers. But no guessing about it. No yellow tag, no way for ME to get the bag. So yeah, that IS the problem.
And bigger lesson learned, never, ever, ever get rid of claim checks till you have your bags in your possession
This is the only way you can prove to anyone, airline, Disney, TSA, whoever, that you checked that bag. I mean, how else are they supposed to know? You have to realize that yes, you know your son, you realize he wouldn't lie but no one else does. And people DO lie all the time. Has nothing to do with his age either. Be they 22 or 62, they lie about missing bags.

So even you don't let Disney get your bags, if you don't keep the claim check, the airline is going to be difficult to work with too.

Definitely not MCO though (at least for domestic flights). Still a best practice to hang onto your claim stub... I want to say JetBlue usually does a sticker on your boarding pass but I could be remembering wrong.
 
While this MAY, or MAY NOT have helped? Here is what my dear wife and I do, each trip....

1) We SCAN or ME tags. A note goes onto the TOP of our clothing with Name, Res Number, Flight Data, Cell Phone and Home Phone Number.
2) A copy of this goes into the OUTSIDE bag pocket labeled "Owner Data".
3) ME tags get TAPED with HD clear packing tape around the fold. These go onto leather straps riveted to bag fronts - NOT on any bag handles. We have to CUT them off, when we get to WDW.
4) We PHOTO the bags, and carry that photo on our cell phones.

With all of this - we've needed to hit Bell Services twice, in about 24 trips. They have been STUNNING, when armed with all this data. Anytime a problem DID occur? They jumped on it like Wild Animals :). Both problems resolved - and Airline Baggage Monkey issues :). Both times? DVC & ME have done a GREAT job :).

Thanks all! This was his first time on magical express. He flew southwest, checked in at the kiosk and did not have the baggage claim ticket to print out. He did not realize it was so valuable to a) print out and b) keep it! He has learned a very valuable lesson.

We normally drive to Disney, but have used the magical express a few times - without any luggage.

Sounds like his issue was just a stroke of bad luck. His suitcase being flagged by the TSA and then them not getting it back for the magical express to pick up.

Just so that he/you knows for the future when you check in at the SW kiosks and tag your own bag the piece that you pull off of the one side of the tag (to stick to the other side and therefore make the tag) is what contains your baggage claim information, it is not something you print separately. So if he had a tag on his bag at one point then he was in possession of the information he needed, he just didn't realize it and therefore didn't retain it.

We always lock our luggage and place ID in and outside our bags. Light packers so we typically choose carry on and carry ourselves if ME.

Wow! This has been interesting. We fly southwest fairly often and have never once had a problem with our luggage arriving with us or arriving to our resort when we take ME. We did have one of our suitcases searched by TSA both going and returning home but they left a note and repacked it quite nearly. I wonder what triggered the search. Now having said this I’m sure my next trip will have an issue.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, there was a note from the TSA in his bag. That is how he knew they searched it. That and the fact that they took everything out, scrambled it around and stuffed it all back in the bag. Everything was amiss in the bag :)

Did he happen to pack a computer in his bag? DH often puts his laptop in his bag and they search his almost 100% of the time when he does. On the other hand, I never put one in mine and mine is rarely searched.
We use packing cubes so they never make a mess of it (just one of the side advantages of using them)

That’s gutsy to put a laptop in it... my Mac is in my purse!
I recall when my ds Guitar ..which was refused at boarding, despite clearing beforehand was taken by luggage people. We literally watched them out plane window TOSS it... heart dropped.
They cracked the neck... heartbreaking as it was $$$.
we had an insurance claim as a result, all ended well eventually but Lesson learned, courier next time as last recourse.
It traveled by vehicle this time.

Eh, his computer his problem. Not mine ;) I gave up trying to tell the boy what to do ages ago. Saves me a whole lot of headache and grey hairs
My Mac doesn't even leave home, I can do everything I need on my iPad (thank you remote desktop)

In the future, make sure he knows to pack items needed for the first 24+ hours in his carryon. That way he doesn’t have to have his bag before going to sleep.

Did your son ride on the DME bus to get to his resort? The only reason that I'm asking is that I have read here on the forums that if you don't ride the bus, and just have DME take your luggage, that WDW isn't too interested in helping to find missing bags. No judgment if he did.

People warn of that but I’ve never heard of it happening.

Guess the TSA took it off when they went thru the bag.

Or it was ripped off while going through the depths of the airport.

The couple times I’ve had a tsa note, things look fine in my bag. The combo of a jumble plus not having the tag makes me think it got caught in machinery, and that’s how it came to the attention of the tsa.

Nope, no laptop in his bag. He only brought his iPad with him, and it was in his backpack that he took into the plane :)
 
I love this feature by the way. Of the airlines I fly, only American and Delta offer it. I love that I get an alert right on my watch as the bags are loaded to the plane and then again when they are off loaded, and put in baggage claim, when they go there. I find it such a relief too, to check the status when I change planes and see they made it from flight 1 to flight 2.

Or you get a text while you're waiting at baggage claim at 11pm after 18 hours of travel that one of your bags didn't make the flight (even though it was put on the belt at the exact same time as the other bag which did make it). :sad1: Thankfully this was on the way home from vacation, and they had someone deliver it to our house the next day. But it was so not fun to deal with when we were completely knackered from travel and jetlag.

I've never had any issues with Southwest and checked luggage.

Me either. Even the busiest ones in the US. But I've never traveled Internationally. I thought maybe that is something done outside the US or something. I save my claim checks in case of an issue never to prove the things are mine. Heck, even if I am comparing look alike bags, I'm not checking claim numbers when I look for my bag, I look for other marking I put on there (that likely only I know about) I do something to every bag I own that makes them stand out in some way so we can spot them on the belt.

I wish I had your luck with Southwest. It's gotten so bad we fly with them less. They have to save me more than $100 to make it worth the headaches. Luggage is just 1

Great advice but don't count on keeping this on the plane anymore depending on where you fly out of.
We have been run into problems with doing them requiring us to check our carry on bags too.
Our local airport has gotten very popular now, which is both good and bad is. Good is, the flights are now getting cheaper and cheaper as it's getting more and more popular, which means less having to drive to Atlanta to fly. But bad in that the flights are full. Full flights mean they can't let everyone on board with a carry on bag. They check them for free mind you but it means you no longer have your carry on with 24 hours worth of stuff on board with you. On our flight our last week they announced that anyone boarding in group 5 or later was required to check their carry on bags, only allowed a personal item for under the seat (aka, purse or small backpack) and they strongly requested anyone else to check theirs too. So off went everything I had packed for the first 24 hours. My meds and a few toiletries fit in my personal items but not everything.

While I appreciate some people need those wheeled carry-on suitcases for medical and other reasons, we find we can fit just as much or more in a good carry-on over-the-shoulder or duffel bag. We've always been able to fit those in the overhead bin (usually the wheels on the wheeled ones make it tricky to find room) and never been asked to check them at the door.

We always have a day's worth of clothes and a bathing suit for each of us that way, and there's still room for a book or delicate souvenirs (the clothes can usually help cushion them). My wife even takes a comfy throw blanket for the plane and there's still room.

It had nothing to do with wheels. You would have been required to check them on our flight last week, if you'd been in loading group 5. Nothing that couldn't fit under your seat was allowed on board. NOTHING in the overhead bin by that point. No exceptions.
