If I wanted to, could I just grab my own luggage and take it to DME or should I just wait for them to get it? I'm very possessive of luggage, especially when I'm far from home and I thought that maybe I could take my own luggage to DME.

Yes you could take your suitcase to the DME with you. But you trusted the airline to send it hundreds of miles why not trust DME to deliver it to your resort? They have a better track record than the airlines.

I understand what you mean, but I have a choice with DME. I don't with an airline. I CAN'T get on a plane with luggage that has to be checked.

You DO have a choice - you could ship whatever you would have checked via UPS or Federal Express instead. Airlines in the United States lost 10,000 pieces PER DAY last year.
But if you're going to bring your checked luggage with you on the bus:
Do NOT attach the yellow DME tags
Pick up your luggage from the luggage carousel at MCO
Bring it to the DME checkin counter (remember, if your flight arrives on side B you will need to go down one level to baggage claim, then back up to the arrival level, across the terminal to the A side and down two levels to the counter)
Bring your luggage to the bus queue with you
Have the driver load it under your bus
Have the driver unload your luggage at your resort
TIP THE DRIVER for handling your luggage
Bring your bags with you to check in, then to your room if your room is ready
If your room is not ready and you want to do something other than sit around the resort waiting for it, you will need to check your luggage with Bell Services/Luggage Assistance
When you arrive in your room and call for your luggage, you will need to tip the Cast Member who delivers it - Disney takes care of the tipping for Guests who let DME handle their luggage as intended.

Yes you can do that. A lot of people do that. Of course there are a lot of us that love being able to say 'good-by' to our checked luggage at our home airport and not see it until we are all checked into our resort room. I've used DME three times now and it has worked like a charm. I have actually had more of an issue when I change resorts and have the resort move my luggage to my new resort....those times it took my luggage less time to travel from Boston to Orlando, and then get to my first resort, than it did to get from resort to resort!!
But, if you are more comfortable having your bags with you, it's no big deal. Don't put the yellow tags on the bags before you leave, then just head to baggage claim as you normally would and pick them up yourself. It's really no different than using a towncar service....just think of the bus as a really big limo!!! Sure, you'll have to tip the bus driver and then bell services at the resort, but if it means that you'll be more comfortable, then go for it. That's what is so nice about this service...we all have choices. What I am comfortable doing, may not be what makes you comfortable and vice versa.

Actually people who feel the way you do will purchase one of the small roller bags and make do with carry on luggage.

Once you make the decision to check your luggage you might as well let Disney handle your bags for you. Just carry on enough for the first hours of your stay. Bathing suit and/or change of clothing.

Well, according to yall, it seems as though DME works pretty efficiently (at least I hope so), so maybe I'll just leave it up to them. It sounds easier. I'll just do like Lewisc said and keep everything I need with me.
