luggage, bag, fanny pack??

I am wondering if I should bother getting something like this for ds http://www.disneystore.com/walt-disney-world-resort-waistpack/mp/1254757/1000290/. He gets nervous about breaking his glasses so he tends to take them off. Do you think it is a good idea with roller coaster or any other rides or not necessary? I figured he could put his glasses in there and his inhaler and of course some snacks. Not sure what else. But does anyone REALLY use fanny packs anymore? I am not sure I would want it in all our pictures.

He does it any other parks we have been to. I think he feels macho and used to it since he is in the military. Does anyone here have it and like it?

I already have a purple Miney Mouse messenger bag with my name on it. Not sure if I will carry it at the parks or not this time. I can't find it online anymore. We only have one large piece of luggage. I am considering getting at least one new piece of luggage too but not sure what yet.

IF you get the fanny pack there is less chance of him losing his glasses (and the bag), but if you are worried about how it looks ask him which he would rather have. Its just when you have a backpack on the rides a lot of times you have to store it and then retrieve it at the end of the ride and I could see it getting lost pretty easily. I have worn a "fatty pack" many times and while it looks kinda silly its functional!

Ok so I am older and know that it probably is not cool to wear a fanny pack any more but I would not be without it...don't have to worry about leaving it somewhere and I put my pass and room key in it etc. oh a camera fits in too, sometimes I have a backpack too and I have left that places(gotten it back though) and it has to go thru security and be really examined... also because on waist hands are free. I vote for fanny pack...

Personally, I've always hated the way fanny packs look. And I can't imagine any teen or pre teen kid that would want to wear a fanny pack. I use a Baggallini messenger bag. It really holds a lot. But, it lies flat if you only have a couple of things in it. Last time we went to Disney, I used one to hold our camera(it alone weighs almost 2 lbs), tickets, water bottle, cell phone, pain killer, cash/credit cards. There is a little zippered pocket on the sling part that is perfect for a cell phone. Plus, there is a mesh pocket on the side for a water bottle. The great thing about this bag is I was able to wear it in the front or the back. Generally I would wear it in the front just because it made the bag more secure. But if I wore it to the front then I didn't have to take it off on the rides. And it looks good, is hands free and comes in a ton of colors...including DIS Lime Green

Why not get your son a small glasses case with a clip on it that he can clip to his belt or to a lanyard? Dollar Tree has them. I too hate fanny packs, but have used them on several trips. This past trip I carried a small cross-body bag I got at Target. Worked great, hands-free, and didn't look awful. As for a backpack, that one doesn't look very comfortable. I'd get a "real" backpack if it's going to be carried all day. I have a Reebok one that is pretty comfy, and my DH's LL Bean daypack has a padded back and I can wear it all day if I have to. That said, the last time I wore a backpack all day was on a field trip with 7th graders. It was such a nuisance that I would never want to carry one in a theme park.

Edit: Forgot because it's pretty new: we got a small sling pack at Eddie Bauer Outlet, $10 with any purchase. It's great. Just big enough for camera, snacks, etc, and has a bungie on the outside for a coat. My DH carried that one all day and it didn't bother him at all. The big bonus is that the strap is adjustable and will attach to different parts of the bag so you don't have to carry it on one shoulder all day.

I LOVE having my Fanny pack at Disney, with 2 kids I like having my hands free to jump on a ride or just hold my lil girl. I don't have a huge bulky one I have a smaller version very nice and girly. I don't think he would mind better that than losing his glasses

I vote for the fanny pack over the backpack. We have both of the ones you linked. Keep in mind the backpack has thick straps. DH switches between the fanny pack/backpack. I use a backpack they sell in the parks (has the year on it) and thin straps. We don't really worry about the fashion aspect of things I guess

I bought a runners belt http://spibelt.com/ for DD6 to carry my old iphone so she would have it on her and not lose it. It worked great. If I were going to use it to hold glasses, I would probably make sure to bring a case, since the sides of this belt are very soft and stretchy.

My son borrows his Dad's hardshell glasses case and puts it in his deep shorts pocket when he rides coasters. He's never had a problem.

My older boys wear cargo shorts and keep cell phones in one of the pockets that either buttons, velcros or zips shut. We have season passes for Busch Gardens and the boys are on the coasters weekly in the summer and have never had a problem.

My cousin carries around his medical stuff in a small bag that attached to his belt that looked like the size of a small camera bag.

As far as glasses go...my DS wears his no problem on coasters. If he's nervous about it, maybe he could get a lanyard strap thingy to attach to the glasses around the back of his head. I can't think of a real name for it! Maybe then he wouldn't have to take them off or worry about them flying away? Not even sure this would work, just an idea...

Also - put a glasses repair kit in your pack too - my DS doesn't lose the glasses, but lenses pop out randomly, and they didn't sell repair kits in the parks that we could find.

Great idea. I wear glasses too so that would be a good thing to have that I never even thought about.

..You didn't say how old your ds was, but how about one of those sling packs someone already mentioned? You know, Nike, Adidas, Croc, they all make them...just a small nylon sack (about 1/3 the size of a backpack) that he could carry. We have a Marshalls and they carry them all the time for about $6.99. I'm just saying these might be 'cooler' if he's older. You know the older kids like to look cool and these are so small, he can put his glasses, camera, or anything else in it and carry it like a backpack or a bag, and look athletic while doing it!

I think it depends on how old your son is. A 5-8 yr old would be fine with a fanny pack. After that I would look into one of the bags like sullins5 mentions. But ask your son. I have a 9 yr old who would be perfectly fine with one but I know other 9 yr olds who would refuse.

Fanny packs are super convenient and for a kid they can be really great. They can sit and stand and not have to worry about anything being left behind or crushed. I know a number of kids with allergies who keep one on hand for epi pens. I know one older boy who has an llbean fanny pack he wears like a sling bag. You can also turn it around to the back for photos. A backpack will require more movement when getting on rides, either taking it off or shifting it. Not a big deal for an older child but harder for a younger one who might forget and sit back on it and crush something or is more likely to leave it behind.

thanks for posting I might end up getting one of these for myself - I notice the new disney parks backpack (the cotton one) doesn't have an outside zipper pocket like it used to.
