Lucky Friend - upgraded on 1st Cruise

After much cajoling and salesmanship, I convinced my good friend and his family to sail on today's 3-day Wonder cruise....we were supposed to sail with them, but things just didnt work out

To my amazement, he received a call from our mutual TA last night that DCL upgraded him from a cat 9 up to a cat 5 verandah....a value of something like $1000.00 for a family of 4....

I explained to my friend that getting a free upgrade is an absolute rarity.... he is jaded now and thinks it happens all the time since he got upgraded on 1st cruise....he is mistaken, dont you think??...it took us 5 cruises before we were upgraded...

Yup, he's jaded ... and if he ever cruises DCL again and he does NOT get upgraded he'll be sorely disappointed ... so make sure that he books at whatever category he'll be happy with, because relying on an upgrade isn't a good idea

We did get upgraded on our first DCL cruise also but it was from cat 6 to 4. Now I am spoiled and won't book anything less. I am booked on the 8/20 repo in the 4. What do you think my chances are getting upgraded to a 3? Not!

Nah-he's not jaded. Just on a pink cloud. Pixie dust can do that to a person.

We were also upgraded on our first DCL. We went from a category 11 to a category 5. It was unreal. I had read on here how rare upgrades are. You can imagine my excitement when we got to the port to check in and the lady tells me that we had received an upgrade. First, she asked me who I knew..lol. The second time we cruised we unfortunately did not receive an upgrade but we really weren't expecting one. When it comes along its wonderful, when it doesn't, thats okay too.

It seems that the most "upgrade-able" categories are 9, 10, and 11....

We were upgraded from cat 8 to cat 5 on the 3day Wonder last month. Rebooked for a cat 6 for our next cruise and will be happy with that if we get it. Can't go back to non-verandah room now that we've been spoiled!

but for $1200 less on a 3 day cruise, it is compelling enough a reason to stay with cat 9
