NAMPA There is one "lucky" dog in Canyon County today.
Three women and their kids saved the dog from a brutal death out in a rural pasture last week.
Lukcy the dog was survived a bullet to his face.
A group of friends were out for their daily walk in Notus when they saw two men shooting at a dog.
The women yelled and whistled to get the dogs attention, that's when the shooters drove off.
The women say it looked like the men were trying to get the dog into the nearby pasture and shoot him from there.
They say four shots were fired and the dog was hit at least one time. Another dog was dead at the scene.
The Airedale Terrier survived the shooting and is now named Lucky. The dog was shot in the nose and the bullet came out through the side of his mouth.
The women say the shooters left Lucky to die, but they couldn't.
"We all risked ourselves to save this dog and we couldn't see throwing it away, someone had already thrown it away once that day," said Laurie Dana.
A veterinarian performed surgery on Lucky, who has since been adopted by Renee McKenzie of Nampa. She said Lucky is a sweet dog and has a good temperament.
In Idaho it is okay to shoot your own pet if it's done quickly and painlessly as possible.
Officials with the Canyon County Animal Shelter says if it's not done in that manner, it could be considered and act of cruelty and the pet owner could face criminal charges.
The penalty for cruelty to animals in Idaho is up to six months in jail and a fine up to five thousand dollars.
