Lucky Charms Tour 2005
Starring .
Angel (aka Mandy) . Mum extraordinaire, teenager at heart, loves to shop
Becky (17) daughter, rock star, budding artist, also loves shopping
Background: trip was booked last minute (just the week before we left) by my lovely DH as a special treat for us girls to help us relax after a tough year, while he works, poor thing. Were travelling with MyTravel to Pop Century for a week in the sun .
2. Welcome Home
4.30!!! what a hideous time to have to wake up!!!! Only Florida would get me up this early you know .and certainly only Florida would get Becky up tho it takes her a little longer to get going. I feel like a zombie this morning after a very broken sleep where someone was constantly shouting and poking me oh .that was Becky apparently oops! Shes scowling and telling me Im a horrible Mum whos kept her up all night, not an auspicious start then, must buy some earplugs ..
Dress and repack, even Becky take sonly 30 minutes to get ready which is a record for her. Were out of the hotel by 5.15 am and on our way across to the north terminal again, spying a trolley at the monorail which makes lugging the cases sooo much easier ..duh!
Pass the TV screens and see our flight listed yay! We are actually going! Departure is et for 9.15 and it looks like its due to be on time so far. Good! Get chatting in some bizarre way to a group of aussie lads who are wayyyy to friendly for this time of the morning, before spying the Mytravel desk. Its easy peasy to pick up our tickets and theres no queue to check in at the desk either so within minutes were all set, with seats towards the back, 2 by the window, oops meant to have asked for aisle seats but whatever, as long as were not separated thats fine. The airport is very quiet thank goodness this morning and Im very impressed by Mytravels efficiency so far.
Becky decides she needs more money and after checking her bank a/c changes up some cash at Travelex, then were straight thru security with a bit more money to spend! Yay! For the first time ever Becky doesnt set off the alarms, even tho she has so much metal in her face! This has been so simple so far Im waiting for something to go wrong, we had so many hiccups last time (forgetting credit card, forgetting tablets etc, blocked the rest out).
Only problem we have is finding food for Becky to eat at departure lounge, there seems to be massive queues everywhere and no vegan food anywhere. Weve bought some snacks but had hoped to find something to take on plane as I believe we dont have food provided on board. She settles with fruit and juice from the slowest service ever at Upper Crust (dont bother), I wanted a cheese and tomato baguette but apparently they dont sell them at breakfast time!!! You can only have meat or egg!!! Weird ..Its very expensive too. Wander round Duty Free but were very restrained (for a change) and eventually find some ear plugs to buy in Smiths of all places. Also buy water, fruit and a wrap for me but still looking for Becky everything seems covered in mayo! Talk to Mark again and really seems strange without him there. Then Becky comes back from having a recce, spitting feathers. Shes been waiting in a queue at a café to buy a salad baguette and has been completely ignored at the front of the q, even when she spoke up. Im not having this, Mum to the rescue! I stomp over to them and ask for the manager giving them a piece of my mind, oops dont think they knew what hit them! Their excuse is they thought she was with someone else! Yeah right . I find a salad roll from somewhere else needless to say, and the saga is over, and when I get back to our seat the flight gate is posted! yay! (maybe they wanted us out of there?)
Gate no. 23 (my lucky number!) isnt too far away and I sit down and put on my rather attractive flight socks .I wish I could show you a picture but alas Becky was laughing too much to take one. I give a wry smile to the lady opposite me who is doing exactly the same to the derision of her own kids .we dont care, anything to stop the fat ankles!
We are first to board after the premair passengers as were in seat 37 h/J and quickly find our seats on the plane. Its a new Airbus 330 with 3 -4- 3 seating and great new TVs with touch screen controls. This means the controls arent in the side of your arm rest ..beleive me, for anyone slightly wider than the average bear this is a bonus! No more fumbling around by your hip to change channel at last. Its lovely and clean too and the service throughout is good. Im very impressed. We also like the novelty of the loos being downstairs, you get to stretch your legs more, and arent standing right by people all the time. I cant say its any worse than Virgin or BA economy in my opinion, and no more cramped.
The flight is non eventful apart from the odd bit of turbulence to keep us on our toes, my companion on my left is a young asian girl in her 20s who seems to have to look after about 10 members of her family dotted around the plane, and is very sweet and friendly. I watch Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy which is ok, would be better if I could concentrate but I cant as Im GOING TO DISNEY!!!!! I am confused however as we are provided with food even tho our booking agents told us it wasnt included, oh well! Its not great but its ok....Becky doesnt have it but eats her salad bap and is happy with that and some snacks weve brought. Manage to drink the massive bottle of water we brought with us too, as all the drinks have to be paid for. Im a waly and have packed my headphones in the case so also have to buy them at £2.50 a go, serves me right!
We arrive at Sanford dead on time at 1.30and before we know it, were through immigration. NOW, comes the slight hiccup I know youve all been waiting for. All the cases come off the belt, mine included ..but not Beckys! We search and search and I could swear blind it was the small green case still going round on its ownsome, but no Becky says its definatly black so we wait .and wait then they turn off the belt and all disappear! Hey! Hmmmmm just a minute, I walk over to the lonely little case and check the front pocket .how funny theres Beckys hat! Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!! One up to me, and I dont let Becky forget that one all holiday!
Step out of the airport and OMG its sooooo hot!!!! Have a panicky 5 minutes while I dont know where were meeting Quicksilver (its my 1st time at Sanford) but then spy somebody holding a board over the road. Its Carlos from QS and hes very polite and friendly, takes our cases from us and were soon on our way in a lovely sleek, clean car.
It seems a long drive from here ad we doze a little on the way to DTD. We have decided to collect my AP first as we get a free stop on the way, and it only takes 10 minutes to sort that out at the Guest Relations place near Planet Hollywood, theyve also checked our old hoppers for us and we have 2 days left for Becky.
Back to car, after telling Becky no, she cant immediately go shopping in Virgin! Were soon at Pop Century. Thank Carlos who gives us his card in case we need any help over the next week, and step into the cool air conditioning of Pop Century. What a great place this is! I love it immediately, and so does becky. Love all the cases in the foyer with relics of the 60s to present day Becky especially loves the My Little Ponys!
Takes just minutes to check in and weve got just what we wanted a room on the top floor in the 60s building (Hippy) near the pool and food court. Its a lovely room, you can see it just behind the green flower at the top left of the photo with Baloo in it. The words peace Love and Happiness around the building certainly ring true. The layout is very like All Stars so we immediately feel at home. Unpacking is quickly done and if we had the energy wed have loads of time to go to a park, but as were exhausted still we decide to eat and just laze by the pool. Talk to Mark to tell him weve arrived safely and then spend ages telling Becky of course shes not fat in her shorts, by which time as we step out of the room the pool has been cleared as theres a storm approaching! Typical!!! Over to the shop (of course well it had to be done!) and realise we have no shower gel as the rooms used to provide them, and the shop doesnt sell it! Oh well, well use soap for now.
Into the food court where I get my beloved cheesesteak wrap and Becky finds a great soy burger (there are several vegan/vegetarian options), buy 2 resort mugs and fill up on frozen coke yum! I also decide to try the luna cheesecake which is far too sickly for me, marshmallow & chocolate is just too much! By this time the rain is over and we relax by the pool until we decide weve had enough of the extended family next to us, smoking, drinking and swearing at each other .sad to say they are British too.
By 8 pm were in bed im afraid, where I promptly fall asleep watching TV. I dream of the warm air, those lovely scents and the sound of American accents. Becky has a shower, listens to her CDs then is away too
Night all.
