Anyone here from the Lubbock area and willing to share information? Anything is appreciated, but specifically looking for info on schools, shopping, entertainment, and general quality of life.

I grew up spending summers in the Houston area, but west Texas is unfamiliar to me. Admittedly, the only times I've stepped foot in the great state of Texas in the last 20 years has been the airport (DFW).

We made the drive from DFW to Lubbock. Once. Went for a college visit. Loved Tech but I told my child if they went to Tech we would drive them out at the beginning and end of the year. Any time in between they would fly. THE most boring drive. Nothing but Sonics and Dairy Queens. The town itself was nice. I just don't know if I would want to be surrounded by nothing.

It's definitely remote, but we live in Central IL right now, so it can't be much worse than that. Certainly the climate will be warmer. We're in the throes of an ice storm right now.

My last visit to Lubbock was also a college visit with DD20. She wasn't impressed with Tech but it was Lubbock that totally knocked it from consideration. She thought we already lived in the middle of nowhere until making the trip to Lubbock. Lubbock is the middle of nowhere with the addition of constant wind. If the move is for a great job then it will be fine but I wouldn't choose to live there.

There's remote, and then there is west Texas remote.

Lubbock is far from anything. It's flat, brown, and there are no trees. I have family and friends in midland, which is about a 2 hr drive to Lubbock. There isn't much of anything between the 2.

Doesn't sound like too many have a high opinion of it. The job is at Tech, and would be a pretty good one. Honestly, I'd be happier closer to "home", but a job is a job. We absolutely hate where we are now, so literally anything would be an improvement.

Trying to be positive here....the town itself has anything you might need AND I have heard from friends that it's a short drive to skiing in NM. So there's that.

Can you go for a visit before you decide? Lubbock is far from many big cities. I live in Texas and most people I know who have lived in Lubbock didn't like it.

If you grew up there, and didn't know any better, it isn't bad. You don't know what you aren't missing. If you've lived outside of Houston, you would find Lubbock boring. It is flat and windy. You can see the best thunderstorms brew up in the spring, but you only get 18-24 inches of rain a year. It is a college town. The only sports are Texas Tech and some of the smaller colleges in town. It has very good medical facilities, again with the school, but also because nothing else is near. From October to December, everyone is ginning cotton, so there is a haze around. The better schools and neighborhoods are in the southwest portion of town. The mall is really the only shopping venue. Most of downtown and other shopping areas have long since vanished.
