WAS. THE. BEST. THING. EVER!

Soooo, after an almost FIVE-year absence from the Magic Kingdom, we made a short, spur of the moment trip to Florida over the fourth of July. (We are nuts, I know. The fireworks alone were worth the drive from Va.) We had a lunch ressie at our favorite place the Liberty Tree Tavern. I'm not sure if it was the heat, humidity or that we just had gotten drenched by rain...but I passed on dessert.
"The ooey gooey toffee cake is my favorite dessert in the whole world," I said, to the server. "But I am stuffed! Guess I will just have a Dole whip float later."
WTH?
Those sentences have been haunting me for the last six weeks! Seriously, I have been dreaming about that moment every darn night. When has being stufed ever stopped me from eating at WDW?

Tonight, I decided to see if I could put an end to my recurring nightmare and made the cake. OMG! It was easy and heavenly...recipes online had a bit of weirdness..ie: 1/4 cup butter (1 stick)...but I went for the gusto...I will be sleeping tonight because I am going to be in a butter coma!

This what I did...basically the all ears recipe.
Bottom layer:
1 box yellow cake mix, butter recipe
2 large eggs
1/2 C. butter, softened

mix and put in a greased 13x9 pan (I used a PC stone baker)

Top layer, "filling"
cream: 08 oz cream cheese and 1/2 C. butter, both softened

add: 3 eggs (large) and 1t. vanilla
then 1 lb. powdered sugar

fold in 1 C. EACH Heath pieces and semisweet chips (I used coarsely chopped bakers choc.)

Put on top of cake batter.

Bake 325 degrees for 50 minutes. (Your oven may be less/dont over bake....you still want i to be gooey)

serve warm with vanilla ice cream....didnt need any more sauce or candy....very rich!!

It was delicious the next two days...warm or room temp with or without ice cream...sadly, the kids just ate the last of it!!

I'm looking forward to trying this on my trip next week. Thanks for posting the recipe!

The next time you make it, put some in a FEDEX box . . .

ooookay.... Can you order this "to go" from the Liberty Tree Tavern?

I'd hate to get a reservation just for this but it sounds like I've GOT to try it. :)

Thanks for the recipe. Did you warm the cake in a microwave the 2nd day? Was it the same as serving it hot? This sounds perfect to take on vacation in a couple weeks for late night snacking or dessert if we decide to get takeout. I try to not cook on vacation, so I would have to make it ahead of time. Serving it straight out of the oven would obviously be best, but that's not going to happen. :p

1) No.
2) If you make a ressie and get seated
. . . you can order the cake
. . . then you can ask for a box
. . . but, you cannot walk up and order one to-go
. . . the TS eateries are not equipped to handle to-go orders
3) Besides, Oooey Gooey is a drawing card.
4) It brings people in to order other stuff - if only coffee to go with it.
5) There would be lost revenue to do this as a to-go item.

I used the same recipe a couple months ago and mine turned out great too. However, I did add sauce and more Heath pieces on top. This was my final product.

My husband wouldn't help me finish it, so I ate this whole pan by myself over the course of a week. I'm not proud of this, but it is what it is. :rotfl2: It did hold up well for that long a period of time. I threw mine in the microwave each time and that definitely helped. You're right, it definitely put me in a butter coma that week.

Thanks for sharing your experience with microwaving the cake. I'll have to do that. Someday, I'll make it to be served immediately. Now I need to decide, if I should make one dessert or two. There will be 4 of us for 4 nights/5 days. My DS isn't big on desserts, but will probably eat it for dinner. His GF & I could eat dessert for breakfast, lunch, & dinner daily. :rolleyes1 My DH eats anything I set in front of him. He'll eat dessert as many times as I offer it.

PS: Did you buy the Heath pieces or did you break up Heath bars? I think I'll cheat & buy the pieces. I like the way you drizzled sauce on your ice cream. I'm planning to do that, along with sprinkling extra Heath pieces as you suggested.

I'm right there with you on desserts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. :thumbsup2

I totally cheated and just bought the bag of Heath pieces. Much easier that way. The sauce and extra pieces of Heath definitely elevate it to wow status for me. And what's a few extra calories when you're already eating about 5 sticks of butter.

To the Canadians out there.....do we even have Heath bars in Canada? :confused3 I'm thinking not. Anything else I can use? I MUST make this tonight!

Maybe Skor bars?? I would think any sort of toffee/chocolate combo would work!

And crikey, I'm not Canadian, that was probably not helpful at all!!!

Thanks curious3069! I guess that means heath bars are hard toffee covered in chocolate. I can definitely get skor bars and even skor pieces. I will try it.

Thanks HeidiGW! This dessert looks heavenly and I will definitely be trying to make this now because of this thread!!!!:thumbsup2

I agree. If you're going to eat a decadent dessert, you might as well go all out. ;)

Thanks for the laugh. For some reason, this cracked me up. :rotfl:

I don't know if it would really be lost revenue. We are going for dinner because my kids prefer it, so we never go for lunch, but if I could hop in there at lunch and get this cake I'd do it and then be back later for our dinner ressie ;)

That just might be me though.

Why is it not offered at dinner for an extra cost if you want that on top of the other cake? LOL Heck it's vacation, two cakes will work ;)

So i tried making this last night...followed the recipe and all I can say is YIKES. For starters, it was SO sweet that more than a few mouthfuls was too much. It was almost comical. It was me, DH and our two friends and we were all laughing while trying to choke down the uber-sweet cake. It was also too "liquidy". IF I ever make it again, I'll use a muffin pan. Making it in a cake pan was a mistake I think. The inside was sooo runny. I didn't under bake it. Left it in for over an hour and the crust would have been burned had I not pulled it out when I did. I also let it rest and cool plenty hoping to solidify it.

Bummer. What a let down.

I may try to do these in a muffin pan as well, thanks for the input :)

I also made this a couple days ago & we are still eating on it. I agree it's very decadent. It's delicious with lots of vanilla ice cream though. I don't think we could eat it w/o the ice cream. Mine wasn't runny at all. Sorry yours turned out that way. That had to be disappointing. Thanks again OP for the recipe. We've thoroughly enjoyed it.

jerseytinkerbell, we agree that it's better with the added toppings & extra Heath bar pieces on top of the ice cream. The crunch of the Heath bar complements the soft cake & ice cream.

This sounds fantastic! Thanks for sharing the recipe! I've never had it at LTT, but will make a point of it next time I'm in the World. In the meantime, I'm ready to try it at home! :)
