Lowe's lost a sale today.

I went in search of a new washing machine today. Found what I wanted at Lowe's, got the ball rolling and was then told that there would be a $90 delivery fee. I buy appliances at Lowe's all the time, have never had to pay a delivery fee. They have signs up all over saying Free Delivery and Haul Away within a 75 mile radius. I live 24 miles from this Lowes.

When I asked the employee about it, he really couldn't explain it other than I'm more than 20 miles away. I said thank you, but no thank you and left the store.

I then went to Home Depot, got the exact same washer for the same price due to it being on sale. When I talked to the employee, I told him I had already been to Lowe's and the delivery fee was a deal breaker. I got free delivery.

The only downside was I had a 10% Lowes coupon and I get 5% off by using my Lowes card. But when you add the delivery charge in, I still did better at Home Depot.

I then came home and emailed Lowe's about the incident. It will be interesting to see what they say about it. :cool1:

Why didn't you discuss it with management? If there are signs saying free delivery w/in 75 miles and you are 24 miles, I would have questioned it further than the employee.

I probably would have asked a manager, too. An extra 10% off plus another extra 5% would have been enough incentive for me to push the issue. Sometimes some employees don't have the answers. If the manager refused, then I also would have left the store and taken my business elsewhere. I have always gotten good responses from Lowes corporate office, but I'm not sure what they can do for you since you already purchased the washing machine somewhere else.

And, just an fyi...home depot will take lowes coupons as well. We have done it many times. I would have done the same thing as you did!

Another FYI - Lowes wouldn't let me use a 10% off coupon along with the 5% off using their credit card so you may not have gotten as good of a deal as you thought at Lowes.

Same thing happened to us several years back with a dishwasher. They wouldnt budge. So we went somewhere else.

Also, Home Depot will give you the 5% off if you use a Home Depot credit card. You just have to mention that you have a Lowe's card and get 5% off with their card and want the discount matched. But, as PP mentioned it can not be combined wit a coupon.

I got Lowe's to match a Home Depot 10% off coupon that required using a Home Depot credit card. Had to use me Lowe's card but got 10% plus 18 months no interest (they would not do the additional 5% so they give you the financing option).

A lot of time the employees have no idea what is going on. I've found this to to be the case at both Lowes and Home Depot. It is a pain, but I would have inquired with management.

I did have a problem with Lowes delivery once. Long story but they ended up refunding me the delivery fee. I didn't really expect them to do that so I was pleasnatly surprised. Since you didn't end up purchasing from them I don't think they'll do much of anything. Maybe they'll send you a 10% off coupon or something.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I'm sure it was frustrating.

We are in the process of buying large items to redo the kids bathroom. (finally!) I have used Lowes for a new bathtub, 5 foot vanity, and double sink top. The tub is here, the vanity and sinktop are on the way.

Why Lowes? Because not only do I get the 5% off for using my Lowes card, I get free delivery to the store. We are ok picking it all up. Home Depot had nothing like this. We would have had to take delivery here at the house, and the cost was high for these large items.

As for the difference in the mileage for free delivery, I don't get it. I sure would not have paid it.And thanks for the tip about asking Home Depot to mtch the 5% Lowes discount. (I have Lowes card, DH has Home Depot)

There's usually fine print with Lowes free delivery. When we last bought an appliance it was a $500 minimum to get the free delivery, otherwise delivery was $75. It wasn't a big deal to us because we took DH's work truck with every intention of taking our new stove with us ourselves, but with the huge "free delivery" signs all over the appliance department without the minimum purchase clearly indicated I can see how it would be misleading and upsetting to others.

I didn't know Lowe's took Home Depot coupons but I know our Home Depot definitely takes Lowe's coupons or matches them. Our Home Depot doesn't like losing a sale to Lowe's. When something like the situation you described happens, I always ask to speak to a manager. Sales associates hardly ever have the power to override those types of things, but managers do at the prospect of losing a sale. I know gas is expensive, but delivery fees have gotten outrageous!! :sad2:

Being married to one of those managers, I asked him about this and he has no idea why they would have been charging you delivery. He wonders if they typed in your zip code wrong and it thought you were farther out. Because otherwise yes, delivery is indeed always free.

Actually I tried both my 10% coupon and 5% Lowes discount at Home Depot. They will only allow you to use one discount and the item was already on sale.

I have successfully used both the 10% coupon and my 5% CC discount at Lowes before, I guess like everything else, it depends on who checks you out.

Just an FYI regarding Home Depot and Lowe''s coupons, if HD is running 10% off appliances no other coupons or discounts will apply...this includes military, lowes coupon or HD coupons. One barcode/discount only. Rare exceptions to this are some special order kitchen promos are combinable with each other but other discounts will not apply. Also HD may not accept a Lowes coupon on appliances at all as it states that price matches do not apply to Depot Direct. If we do price match we add any delivery fee that another retailer charges ex: if Best Buy sells it for $800+$50 delivery then the price, if they do it, gets matched down to $850. Basically it's one discount or another...any promo that is applied via a barcode scanned at the register is it (except the s/o kitchen things above). Also they are cracking down on accepting the Lowe''s coupons due to abuse. In our District they are only for use by homeowners using a personal card or check...no contractors and no more email coupons due to the ability to print many out and keep using until the expiration date. As with anything, YMMV but I just wanted to give a heads up that Lowe''s coupons don't always mean an extra 10% off anything.
We do have free delivery on appliances ordered from Depot Direct. I have never had the system try to charge for delivery.

Home Depot offers free delivery to the store if you special order something from the brick and mortar store itself. For online purchases we don't have the site to store option so you are limited to buying only certain items that a store stocks. We basically go pick it off the shelf for you. Just a heads up though sometimes the online price for like items is much cheaper than a special order. I was looking to buy a sink and the special order price was $100 more than if I bought it directly from HD.com. It was a kitchen sink so not too large and it was free ship for that item. Hope that helps.

I once found a carpet I wanted at Home Depot. Signs everywhere said free delivery. They refused free delivery to our address. I went home and called the corporate headquarters and their legal department.

I got my carpet and free delivery.

(Turned out it was the wrong size and I had to return it--they tried to charge me a restocking fee. Nowhere on my paperwork did it say there was a restocking fee with returns. Turns out corporate had forgot to add that in there. So I had no fees to return it either!)
