Lower room rates?

I just read that Citi Investment Research analyst cut WD Co's price target Thursday due to lower hotel room rates at it's theme parks.

Does anyone see lower room rates this year? I can't remember what I paid last year for a garden view at the Poly last December but this year I'm paying $340 a night rack rate.

You're right, there was a significant rack-rate increase for 2008- however, there were more discounts that were made available to the general public. It seems that anyone at any time is able to get a great rate on any wdw resort.

Were they referring to the the "dollar rate" or to the "occupancy rate" of the hotel?

Probably the "occupancy rate", not the "dollar rate".

I've been reading that occupancy rates in Kissimmee are are hovering around 50%. I've got friends staying in the Radisson on 192 just off the property and they are paying $49/night. The hotel's are getting desparate to have someone in their rooms.

They may have rooms available at the values, but I know the Poly is booked solid through the holidays. That's one reason why I couldn't get an AP discount. I didn't call in time and the next day they were GONE. They told me because it is booked solid there weren't that many discount rooms available. Even if someone canceled that had a discount room, I couldn't get that discount. It would just go back to being a regularly priced room.

ALL of the DVC resorts are booked solid through the end of the year.

It's generally the busy time for value period in October and then for the holidays. We used to be guaranteed a spot at OKW or SSR in October. I would think that the inventory from AKV would help things.

Angelrose, don't feel bad, we are paying that much at the Yacht Club this weekend and that was with the AP discount.

No amount of extra inventory will help. Time Shares {re: DVC} are always over sold. Disney has been so unbelievably aggressive with selling these resorts, that there are more members then there are available rooms. If you don't attempt to make reservations a year out, you won't have much luck. We were in the DVC from day one. Back then, you could make a short reservation, one or two days, within a month of arrival. That has pretty much become impossible to do. And this has become a year round thing. :sad2:

DH and I judge occupancy by what is available for Castmember rates. When the resorts are full - castmember rates disappear early.

As an example this year......

2008 we have seen far more choices in DVC than in the past (38 days we will be in a 1 BR Villa at Boardwalk for 10 days) <----deeper than normal castmember discount when we booked.

Last month we decided to go to DL for a short week because our favorite Grand Californian had a castmember rate that was DOUBLE the normal castmember discount for that beautiful resort. Yes, DOUBLE !!!

Anaheim would not be giving away their hotel rooms to castmembers at those rates unless they had to. What it says to us is FREE dining, AP discounts and other promotions are not drawing enough guests to fill the rooms.

At DL we walked onto the big rides all week with hardly a line....Space Mountain, BTMRR, TOT, Sorin, Pirates....were all walk-ons. It appeared that for a day or so....one wing of GC had no guests (no lights on at night in the rooms). All of this was FABULOUS for our holiday --- but not at all good for Anaheim.

Just remember - these rooms could be booked at BIG discounts. We will be staying at the BWV during Pop Warner weekend and we have a 65% castmember discount!!!!!!!!!!
