Low crowds but no sites?

I see all the news about low crowds in the parks, but I do not see any sites at the Fort online. Are people still going to the Fort but just not going to the parks? I was going to take advantage of the crowds if I could find a site.

Really one thing has little to do with the other. The campground's is almost always sold out.
A small percentage of the daily guest total are Disney guests. Over 75% (if not more) guest are locals, or guest staying else where.

There are 847 campsites at Fort Wilderness. There are some 30K hotel rooms. The Fort is just a drop in the bucket of the people attending the parks. Then you have some people who spend months at a time there. I know of at least one person camping there now until November 1st. Weekends are tied up by locals, quickly.

And although some of the locals who fill up weekends will have Annual Passes, not all of them do/will. The Fort is a great place to camp even without heading to the parks.

Out of curiosity, @kilroys, what dates were you trying to get? Like in the current week? By end of month? What type of site?

Bama-ed. Looking at November and the first of December. Full-hookups or better. Already planning for next year, but I hope to slip in a trip this year.:)

I have that time of year booked next year. Booked it at 499 days. That is a tough time of year with the Halloween, then Christmas holidays.

And Thanksgiving .....

And cooler weather .....

Hate to say it but November and early December are no longer "slower" times in the resorts or the parks. But I would keep checking for cancellations and if you can travel on short notice, you could still snag something. Some folks pick a level of campsite and then check frequently/daily day-by-day and pick up what they can and try to string together several reservations at the same level of campsite to build a consecutive stay (you can get them merged into one reservation number before you arrive). Yes it means multiple deposits but people can and have done this successfully.

It's been getting noticeably harder to get Fort reservations in recent years so we've resorted to "as early as possible" and at least well beyond a year out.

An added piece of the puzzle, for current availability, is loop closures. When we were there a few weeks ago, a number of loops were closed. Not sure why, and/or if they still are, but it was definitely part of the story in mid-August.
Yep, I was there a couple weeks ago and it was far from full/sold out. And yep, some loops were closed.

Yes the reports all summer have been loops closing on a rolling basis for several days at a time reportedly for electrical work.
Yep, saw that. And they actually re-did the main road that runs from the front to the back while we were there.
